~7~
10. Information Interview

1. What kind of training or background is necessary for this type of work?
2. How did you get this job, and what kinds of experience and preparation helped you most?
3. What are your responsibilities in this position?
4. Knowing what you know now, what advice do you have for getting into this work?
5. What personal qualities or abilities, are important for doing well in this kind of work?

9. Can you recommend another person I could interview like this? When I call him/her, may I use
your name?
10. What would my typical duties be for the day?
~8~
24. "Tell Me about Yourself"
I possess a combination of skills & Experiences that makes me stand out from the crowd. I have what it
takes to solve problems and do the job.
I am a woman who has been through a lot and have done a lot. I have always been great at being a great
listener, and someone who usually knows where to go when in danger and who to call if you need more
help.
I have always wanted to work with people like me. I started drinking at a young age and quit when I was
16. But then I turned to drugs, I did drugs for 2 years every day. One day I came to the conclusion that I
needed to stop, so I woke up in the morning 17 years ago and just never touched that drug again. I had no
family support and had to do it all on my own. And that is where all my experience comes from for the
career that I am wanting.
I want to be an ear & voice for those people that our city has forgotten, and who feel that our city doesn’t
care for anymore. I want to show these people that need my help that I am there for them and that I was in
the same place as they are and I still got out, I want to help them succeed. I want to make sure that all
people are needed and that they do have more to live for even though everything may be gone, I want to
make them understand that everyone is important and that they do have a purpose.
It has taken me a long time to figure this out for myself, and so I want to show people that everyone’s
story does go on that it is only up to them to carry on with their journey.
My job experience is almost nil to nothing but my life experience is full of a lot of different experiences.
My life has been a lot of obstacles that most people have not even been through and could never imagine,
and that’s why I feelthat I could be a great advocate for people that are living through what I have been
through. To this day I still deal with a lot of the baggage from my past, so then I can help people get
through different problems to help them succeed.
Some people that are there to help these people in need don’t actually know what these people are going
through they don’t know their frustrations, and that’s where I can help and be their voice for them. These
people need some one that is resourcefuland can be a problem solver for them, and can be supportive of
what they need help with and I feelthat I would be great at this, I am an outstanding listener and
communicator.
I still have goals that I want and this job I think would help to get to my other goals.
~22~
25. Advocate
“Be a Voice Not an Echo” ― Albert Einstein
What skills and interests relate to the
occupation?
An interest in helping others
Good with people
Problem-solving skills
Communication skills
Volunteer experience is useful
Able to handle differing opinions
Persuasive
Good with people
What qualifications and education are needed to
enter this field?
No specific or formal educational qualifications are
required to be an activist.
Activists come from a variety of educational backgrounds. Some have only a high school diploma. Others
have a diploma or bachelor’s degree. You are more likely to get paid work if you have some post-
secondary education in a field related to your area of interest.
Howand where can you acquire the qualifications and education needed?
Volunteering with activist organizations will give you a chance to prove your dedication and develop
relevant skills and experience. You should enjoy speaking out on issues and debating in a public forum.
You should also be comfortable “going against the grain”. As an advocate for a particular group of people
or idea, you have to defend your viewpoints very well in order to sway public opinions. Sometimes
volunteer positions can lead to paid work.
What kind of on-the-job training or continuing education might be involved in this destination?
For this destination your on-the-job training would come from the leader of the group, they would train
you on what your core tasks,as for the continuing education you can get a degree or attend rallies and
demonstrations. You will learn new things every day, when you read the paper,or blogs online, or even
just word of mouth.
What Labour market information affects the choice ofthis occupation? Is the demand for this
occupation increasing,decreasing or stable?
I feelthat everyone in their own way is an advocate, and when there is a cause there is a reason so I would
have to say that this career is stable or even increasing, with more people standing up for their rights.
What future work trends might impact this occupation?
I don’t think there are any work trends that impact this occupation, the only thing would be if no one
needed help, which will never happen because everyone needs help at least once in a lifetime. I wish there
were more paying jobs, but employment opportunities are rare. There are lots of volunteer positions,
though. I expect this won’t change.
~23~
26. What three other occupations are related to this field ofwork?
Community Worker
Politician
Media Reporter
What alternative work styles may be possible
with this occupation?
Being an advocate means being flexible, because
every cause is different and you are never
fighting for the same thing, your causes change.
So your alternative work style changes to adapt
with the cause you are fighting for.
What health and safety issues are the most
important when considering this occupation?
Although this kind of work can be very
rewarding, it can also be emotionally draining. It
can also be pretty tough work psychologically,
and sometimes physically as well. Volunteers
often spend a lot of time on their feet canvassing
for support, or attending demonstrations in all
kinds of weather.
What aspects ofworkplace legislation must be
considered?
I feelthat for this career choice that the aspects of
workplace legislation would be considered the
same as in any other occupation.
~24~
27. Is there union involvement? Howdoes that affect your choice?
No, there is not a union involvement. A union is a group of advocates that fight for their colleagues. This
does not affect my choice at all.
What ethical decisions might be important or necessary in this occupation?
Respect for the Dignity and Worth of People
Be a voice not an echo
Be a service to Humanity
What are three other important pieces ofinformation you need to knowabout this occupation?
Activists raise awareness about social, political, or environmental issues, and work to bring about
change.
Activists would be well-suited for public policy development with a government.
Don’t even think about working in this area unless you have a sense of outrage and a passion
about some issue. But even the passion isn’t enough. You’ve also got to do your homework.
You’ve got to know your facts. No one’s going to listen to you if you really don’t have the factual
information to back it up.

29. S.M.A.R.T. Goal
Specific:
What: My goal is to be an Abuse / Crisis Counsellor that helps abused women.
Where: I would be accomplishing my goal in London, Ontario, at a Women’s Abused Centre.
When: I am really hoping to have this accomplished with in the next 5 years.
Why: The reason I am wanting to accomplish this goal is to help women in abusive situations,
because I have been in abusive situations.

Achievable:
I feelthat my goal is achievable, if I go to a Counselling Certificate Program first. Then when I have
accomplished that goal then I can move on to my next goal to get the Degree. Which will boost my worth,
and then I will be able to reach the main goal and have a Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW)
Realistic:
I feelthat my goal will tie into my life, as I have lived the life that these women live now. I feelthat I will
be able to accomplish this, and that in the future I will feelaccomplished

If you work in Ontario, you are probably protected by the ESA. But it will not cover federal employees and a few

Most employees earn at least 2 weeks of vacation time after every 12 months of employment. Employees are
entitled to be paid at least 4% of their total wages earned as vacation pay.
g) What benefits are pregnant women entitled to?
Eligible employees are entitled to take 17 weeks of Pregnancy Leave and 35 weeks of Parental Leave (if they have
taken Pregnancy Leave). All other eligible parents, including pregnant employees who don't take Pregnancy Leave,
can take up to 37 weeks of Parental Leave. These are unpaid, job-protected leaves.

An employer must give an employee advance written notice, or termination pay instead of notice, or a combination
of both, if the employee has been working continuously for 3 months or more and his or her job is terminated. The
amount of notice or pay depends on how long the employee has been working for the employer and the number of
employees being terminated in a 4-week period.
Employees can't be punished for claiming their rights
Employers cannot intimidate, fire, suspend, orotherwise punish an employee, or threaten any of these actions
