Transcription is the process of synthesizing RNA using DNA as a template. During transcription, the DNA double helix unwinds and RNA polymerase adds complementary RNA bases to the DNA according to base-pairing rules (A-U and C-G) to create a complementary mRNA copy in the cell nucleus. The mRNA copy is then used to produce proteins through translation.
