1. Personal Statement
I’ve been interested in art since the 6th grade, but I really became involved in it when I
attended my first year at Princeton Day School. I enrolled in PDS’s “Intro to Fine Art,” taught by Jerry
Hirniak, my freshman year, and carried on in the “Fine Arts” Major during junior year. Throughout life
I’ve found that art is sort of a bridge that I could use to translate what was going on in my head without
sitting down and writing a formal paper on what I was experiencing. I’ve always been an absolutely
relentless perfectionist in literature; every story goes extra lengths to tell the reader what I mean about
something- I attack it, doggedly, at every angle. But art is a sort of language; a splash of paint on canvas
that, with a single glimpse, can convey to even the most untrained eye emotions of anger, confusion,
chaos, and sometimes indefinable joy. Art for me is a way to communicate stories and ideas, the little
thoughts that I caught the tail end of before they flit through my head at light speed and then disappear.
I’ve become extremely passionate about social commentary and historical events, as well as examining
the shadow of people’s influence over one another. The Hooded Figure is my observation on the
influences of racism during our childhoods (be it through our parents, environment, media or
otherwise) that mutate when we grow and leave lasting imprints of hate and bigotry.
The following images were produced in 2 classes at PDS. They incorporate work done in
painting and drawing and in multiple mediums. Some of the works are directly related to class
assignments, while another group of the works revolve around subjects of specific interests to me.
