4. ARTIST’S STATEMENT
2
My name is Tian Tang and I’ve
spent the last four years in a highschool arts
program at Don Mills Collegiate Institute.
The program is known as the CyberARTS
program and honestly, I am so glad that I
decided to join and stay in this program.
This program has really helped me
by encouraging me to create art and giving
me the push I needed to continue to pursue
a creative field. I’ve learned so many things
that aren’t just art related in this program
and my experience in CyberARTS has
been invaluable.
Although I still don’t have a defined
style, I know I will find it as I continue to
work and create more artwork. Personally,
I am a fan of work in fineliner, watercolour
and acrylic paint. As for graphic design,
I have a strong passion for photography
and I think that my design style is rather
minimal.
I like creating artwork that I find
is aesthetically pleasing and I believe that
you shouldn’t create artwork to please
others but to further yourself. Thus, many
of my pieces are very personal and explore
personal topics. Though it may be self-
centered, I know that by engineering these
personal pieces, I’m also getting to know
myself and develop myself as a person.

24. BEFORE & AFTER
watercolour realism painting
watercolour
on stonehenge
11” x 7.5”
2012
These two
paintings are
meant to be
realistic and
represent an
artifact’s before
and after. I really
liked the idea of
fire and chose to
do the before and
after of a book.
The “after” has
been charred
by fire and is
contrasted against
the pristine
“before” painting.

25. ALL THAT GLITTERS
acrylic still-life painting
acrylic
on canvas
16” x 20”
2014
This still-life painting is supposed to describe
someone’s personality using the objects presented.
I decided to represent a feminine side of myself.
painted a tiara that I had from my childhood, a bottle
of gold from the ROM which I used to frequent often, a
figurine my mom bought me, my favourite Harry Potter
book, and a box from Laduree in Paris.

26. PERSONA
3D acrylic painting
acrylic
& silicone
on canvas
24” x 24”
2015
Thie concept behind this piece is “spirit animals” and I
thought that a fox would suit my personality well. This
piece was inspired by Wes Anderson’s film, “The Fantastic
Mr. Fox.” The background has a raised texture and is
inspired by floral wallpaper.

27. MUSHROOM
GIRL
acrylic painting
acrylic, gold foil,
& gloss gel medium
on canvas
24” x 36”
2015
This painting was inspired by
Dominique Fortin’s style in
which she paints her young
daughter. In this piece, I was
inspired by a childhood song
about a village girl who picks
mushrooms. I only kept the
face realistic to keep with
the style of Fortin’s work and
I added gold foil inspired by
her work as well.

31. inspired by david altmejd’s
plaster installation artworks
Thie concept for this piece explores how
people’s identities and personalities
are influenced by their enviroment and
their surroundings but how an individual
also influences the enviroment and
surroundings.

33. inspired by KAWS, Zhou Fan, and
Jean-Michel Basquiat
Thie concept for this piece is a parasite that represents
a physical being for creativity. There is a question posed
here on who is the parasite. Is the girl the parasite who
is sucking up all the creativity from the creature or is the
creature the true parasite, sucking the life out of the girl?

36. CITY VEINS
mixed media illustration
watercolour, pencil
crayon, gel pen,
&fineliner
on stonehenge
48” x 48”
2014
This piece represents how time is wasted by traveling from place to place.
I was inspired by TTC subway cars as even though I am wasting time, I love
how relaxing and unbothered I feel on the trains since how fast the subway
runs is out of my control and I can only sit there and wait.

37. CHINA TOWN
mixed media illustration
acrylic, fineliner,
& white gen pen
on wood board
16” x 20”
2015
This artwork is about a personal dwelling
and for this piece, I chose to illustrate
Chinatown in Toronto. I really like the
busy atmosphere there and I especially
love all the different foods you can
buy as well. Going to Chinatown is my
way of coping of missing China and it’s
atmosphere.

39. The underlying theme within this series is self-identity
and knowing yourself. The subject matter in the four
pieces will be me throughout my highschool career.
I’ve always been obsessed with the notion of trying to
define myself, as a way to help “find” myself, who I am,
and what represents me. I went through phases where
I conformed to a certain style as a way to deal with not
knowing who I truly am. The incomplete identity I was
forcing myself only confused me further and pulled me
away from what my actual identity was. The blurred out
faces represents this lost identity throughout the years
and since this awareness and growth happened to
me throughout my highschool years, I really wanted to
capture this understanding of myself in this final piece
of artwork that I create in my last year of highschool.
