1. Saint Roch’s Secondary School – Higher Still Physical Education THE OPTIONS IN THE FAST BREAK
2.
3. Saint Roch’s Secondary School – Higher Still Physical Education All other players must now be ‘ AWARE : ALERT : ALIVE’ to every possibility of attack. This means that they must know what their role in the play is and where they should immediately head to. The 1-player (Point Guard) moves out to the side close to the inbounds player to provide a passing option. The 4-player (Power Forward) ‘posts up’ at the free-throw line to help with any full court pressure from the opponents. To get open he/she heads to the mid-court but ‘V’-cuts back to the foul-line, where they are also providing a passing option. The 2 & 3-players (Shooting Guard & Small Forward) sprint down the outside lanes closest to where they were when the basket was scored. This helps stretch the defence wide and makes it more difficult for the opponents to set up a full-court press. 1 2 4 4 1 3 3 2
4. Saint Roch’s Secondary School – Higher Still Physical Education These movements create options for the 5-player to make passes for an immediate attack by: (a) either the 2 & 3-player: or (b) to build an attack from the back using either the 1 & 4-player. It is therefore up to the 5-player at this point as to which strategy the team are going to use, i.e. using either the deep pass or if it should be dumped off short. It is clear that if either the 2 or 3-player receives the ball they should immediately attack the basket, especially if they have beat the defence to the front court. They would then have a clear line into the hoop. What happens if this attack option is not on and the ball is passed short to the 1 or 4-player? 1 3 2 4 5
5. Saint Roch’s Secondary School – Higher Still Physical Education 4 On receiving the ball, the 1-player should immediately drive into the middle lane and move up the centre of the court. If this can be executed quickly the offence may be able to create a 3v2 or 3v1 situation, called a ‘break’. (Remember, this move has occurred because the deep pass was not on. The defence had cut out that option) It may be that the 4-player receives the inbound ball. In this situation the 1-player immediately drives forward on a diagonal, as above, into a position ahead of the 4-player to receive the pass, and the above scenario may then be on. 1 1 3 2 5
6. Saint Roch’s Secondary School – Higher Still Physical Education 2 1 4 If the 3v2 or 3v1 situation does not materialise because the defence has done its job successfully, then the 1-player moves the ball forward to either the 2 or 3-player - if they are ‘open’, or holds the ball up. This give the bigger players time to move up court quickly into a position where the team can then move into their next strategy or tactic of setting up a different attacking play. That could be a ‘Horseshoe’ attack or a Motion Play and it is the 1-player (Point Guard) that will let everyone know what that play will be. 3 5 4 5
