From Carmarthenshire to Cambodia Knowledge and the transmission of knowledge in Cambodia was closely linked to religion and kingship. The temples and the royal court were repositories of information, religious texts and annals. Much was lost during the reign of the murderous Khmer Rouge regime, a regime which annihilated education and learning. After 1979 much has been rebuilt but it is a slow process which started from nothing and encounters many challenges and issues not encountered in the western world.
