Technology has significantly impacted sports in several ways:
1) Sensors and devices embedded in sports equipment or attached to athletes capture biomechanical, physiological, and behavioral data that provide feedback to improve performance.
2) Big data analytics of large datasets from various sensors reveal patterns in individual and team performance over time.
3) Replay systems with multiple cameras from different angles are used in many sports to accurately review close calls and ensure correct calls are made.
2. Overview
“Advances in information technology have let computer scientists and
engineers develop sports-specific feedback systems in cooperation with bio
mechanists, physiologists, sport psychologists, and strength and
conditioning specialists. These feedback systems incorporate embedded
sensors and devices into the sport equipment or use sensors attached to
the athlete to acquire biomechanical, physiological, and cognitive and
behavioral parameter values of the exercise performed.”

3. • Big Data is Extremely
large data sets that
may be analyzed
computationally to
reveal patterns, trends,
and associations,
especially to human
behavior and
interactions.
• Big Data has changed
the way statistics are
analyzed, processed,
and shared in every
sport today.
4. Replay Center
Replay systems have made statistics to be
analyzed and interpreted at a much higher
rate, more aspects of the game can be
monitored.
5. Replay Center cont.
In soccer, Goal Line Technology is
used to determine if a goal was
scored. If the ball passes the goal
line, sensors will indicated it and
send a signal to a wrist device that
the referee
wears.(GOAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL)
In football, cameras are placed inside
the goal line markers for different
angles of the game, and also to catch
close plays that the referee may not
be able to catch in real time.
In basketball, camera are placed
on the backboard of the basket
to catch gameplay and will be
used if there is any discrepancy
in a call or to determine if a shot
was made before the time
expired.
6. Real-time Stats
• Cameras and tracking devices are
being placed in players shoes,
helmets, and other equipment to
keep real-time stats.
• In collegiate sports, there
is a Sports Information
Director from the home
team with a Laptop
running Statcrew
software. They enter data
for every play in the game
to keep the stats updated
for play-by-play
experience.
• For the score and clock,
a stats company like
Stats Inc. are directly
linked into the
scoreboard, so the data
comes in automatically.
7. Sports Science
• Sports science is a discipline that studies how the healthy human body
works during exercise, and how sport and physical activity promote health
and performance from cellular to whole body perspectives.
• Sports science can be studied and analyzed to observe different
components of athletes movements, to determine their strengths and
weaknesses throughout different aspects of their individual sport.
• Technology advancements has made the study of sports much better
because new equipment is constantly being produced to continue to
develop and improve the world of sports.
8. Apple Watch
• Apple watch is a personal workout tracker
and heart rate monitor.
• Apple watch records personal workouts, and
reports data analytics to you.
• Apple watch tracks daily rings, which
includes total hours standing, total exercise
time, and calories burned per day.
• Goals can be set each day, week, or month
for daily ring goals, and apple watch will
track your progress and send you messages
to help you complete your goals.
9. Stadium Technology/ Fan engagement
• Event WiFi is one of the most critically important aspects of any event and
provides a highly visible branding option. Sponsors can display their logo
in the event brochure, conference app and/or via signage around the
event space. The WiFi network splash page is another great opportunity
for branding and can include a link to the sponsor’s website.
• WiFi allows fans to have a different experience while at sporting events.
It allows them to stay connected to social media to post video footage of
their experience and share with friends and family who are not in
attendance.
10. Stadium Technology/ Fan engagement
Cont.
• Stadiums equipped with large jumbo Tron's allow fans to feel as if they
are apart of the game. They can view instant replays after majority of the
plays, and they even get to see close call plays before the referee.
• If there are multiple games going on that day, some stadiums will play
the other games on large displays throughout the stadium so that their
fans can attend their games, and still not miss the other games. This is
important because some fans will not attend games because they want
the luxury of being able to view all games that day.
11. Complications
• With so many advancements in technology, there are also problems that
come along with so much new technology.
• On the high school and college level, some schools can be lost in the
shuffle trying to keep up with so much new technology.
• Schools have to start hiring more staff in the technology field to make
sure that all of their systems are up to date.
• Depending on the type of funding the school receives, there may be a
problem with keeping up with technology because of the cost.
Editor's Notes
Big data solves problems and predicts outcomes. In sports, this is critical when it comes down to analyzing the game because it gives so much more information to interpret and study. Big data is extremely large data sets that can be broken down into sections based on the information that is trying to be analyzed. For example, in a basketball game all shot attempts are documented for a team rather they make or miss the shot using a system called Synergy Technology. That is a lot of information to be review to find the plays you want to study. To break all this information down to make it easier, you can select to view made shots only, and the system will automatically sort out all the clips with only made baskets. Based on made baskets, using the data received from the whole game, the system is able to predict outcomes for the next game, and even for the rest of the season.
Replay systems have changed sports forever. Before replays, whatever the referee called was the final call regardless if it was the right call or not. Now, if there is a dispute in a play, referee’s have instant access to view the play. Also, stat crews are able to analyze the game better with the use of replay and slow motion to really capture every single aspect of the play. Replay has brought value to sports for the referee’s, stat crew, fans, and also media.
In high school and college, Synergy Technology is used to record live game footage of all games. With synergy, the stat crew for that game are able to quickly key in the play by play using short hand abbreviations. This allows team to sort threw the game film and search for specific plays that they want to review and analyze. Also synergy technology calculates percentages based on the information it receives about the gameplay.
The apple watch is a great technology advancement for me in my personal workout life. Each day I try to monitor and complete my daily rings because I know that I have set goals to reach. Also it is very helpful how the watch notifies you when you are not making enough progress for that day, or when you are crushing your goals. The apple watch is great for tracking workouts, but it is capable of doing much more. It is completely connected with my phone, so I can do almost anything on my watch that I can do on my phone. This is very helpful because it is more convenient to check my watch for information rather than pulling out my phone.
