Reflection Paper On Conflict Management
CONFLICT MANAGEMENT – my experience
There isn't anyone in this world who do not face conflicts. Conflicts arises everywhere in everyone's life, whether be it the home or work place or
within one's own mind. No one can avoid conflicts. So we are left with only one option and that is "how tactfully we handle these conflicts".
Disagreements and uncertainties are natural in any conflicts. Different opinions and perspectives begin to emerge. This may arise because of a number
of reasons like competition for resources, dis–agreement over goals or responsibilities, poor communication, power struggles, or fundamental
differences in values, ethics, attitudes, and personalities.
Conflicts sounds negative but it isn't necessarily bad. Conflicts can...show more content...
I do follow avoidance sometimes but ultimately i am left with unsolved conflicts, which brings me back to either compromising or accommodating or
competing level. But avoidance sometimes helps me in a big way as it gives me sufficient time to consider, re–think and then act.
I take my time, believe in open talks & try to resolve the conflicts as soon as possible so that i can at peace.
Conclusion:
Conflicts can be both positive and negative and should be encouraged in work place till a certain degree so as to make the individuals and groups
come out of their comfort zone and work on the Zone of concern. The moment the conflict crosses the zone of concern, it becomes a big problem. It
has to be handled immediately then or else it can be destructive.
It ultimately depends on us as to how we perceive the conflict, whether we take it as an opportunity or a threat. We cannot control our emotions, our
ego, our anger, but we can definitely find out the best measure to resolve the conflicts. It is well said by M. Esther Harding that "Conflict is the
beginning of consciousness."
In short i will just say "Don't fear conflict; embrace it – it's your job". If you understand conflict, you understand

Conflict Between Conflict And Conflict
For this paper, I chose conflict because it is present in nearly every aspect of life, it is unavoidable, and knowing how to handle it is a valuable tool
which I would like to investigate. Webster defines conflict as "A mental struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or
external or internal demands", but the reality is there is no clear definition of how conflict starts, no two conflicts are the same, and they all start for
different reasons over different issues. There are four types of conflict:
Content Conflict – Disagreement caused by differing interpretations of the meaning of a concept or an idea.
Values Conflict– Disagreements over management practices which may be value based regarding how employees should be handled and treated.
Negotiation of Selves Conflict – Conflicts over how one see themselves versus how they are seen by others. Often people see themselves differently
than others see them.
Institutionalized conflict – Conflicts that occur due to the structure of a business or organization. Some businesses encourage conflict as a part of their
decision making process. (Lamberton & Minor, 2014, p.266) Conflict in the work environment is common. Issues like self–worth, recognition, team
dynamics, and compensation; all provide an incubator for conflict. The most common causes for conflict in my opinion are: competition, personality
conflicts, people who choose

How to Resolve Conflict Essay
Conflict is in inevitable part of our everyday lives. Since no two people view things in the exact same manner, disagreement will most certainly arise
at some point in time. Conflict is simply a difference of opinion and is considered to be a normal part of our everyday lives. There are several different
forms of conflict and not all of them are considered to be bad. This paper will discuss the causes of conflict, the different types of conflict, and barriers
to conflict. According to Communication Research Associates, conflict is a condition of imbalance within an individual (Communication Research
Associates, 2005, p. 178). Keep in mind that just as there are disadvantages to conflict, there are also several advantages.

For example, if you are at work and walk by someone's desk and accidently knock their pen on the floor. All of sudden, the person lashes out and
starts to curse at you. Knowing that this is not the norm for your coworker, it would safe to assume that they are under some form of stress or have
other things on their mind. By knowing this, it becomes easier to respond in a more responsible, tempered, and appropriate, manner. Sometimes ego
can become a cause for conflict as well. There may come a time when someone is wrong about something or they may have made a mistake but they
refuse to admit it. Because they have such a high ego, they may become self–protective of their situation, therefore causing conflict because they refuse
to admit they were wrong. Instead they may choose to become persistent in standing their ground, whether they are right or wrong.
During communication, if the intended goals are not clearly identified, there is a greater possibility for error and it could further aggravate a situation,
causing conflict. Because each individual is different there are bound to be clashes within certain personality types. For example, if someone prefers
to discuss everything in detail and I prefer to get straight to the point then we could have a personality clash because we are not seeing things
eye–to–eye. They may view me as being incompetent or irresponsible while I would

Essay on Conflict and Communication
Conflict and Communication
Conflict can happen anytime of your life, it will happen matter you want it or not. In addition, it can have both negative and positive impacts for our
relationship (Gudykunst, 2004). According to Yi–Feng 2007, she mentions that conflict is "incompatible activities, where one person's actions are
interfering, obstructing, or in other ways making the behavior of another less effective". In term of nature of conflict, conflict is a cause which happens
by threatened human needs problem (Kelman, 2002). The sources of conflict can divide into three things, there are misinterpret, disagree and
perceptions of incompatibilities (Roloff, 1987). In addition, in term of nature of nature of conflict, conflict can develop in...show more content...
In addition the way of people approach to managing conflict is depend on culture and ethnic (Ting–Toomey, 1985). For example, Asian use avoiding,
integrating and obliging to approach but European and American use dominating.
In term of face and conflict, we can divide in two parts. Firstly, cultural differences in face–concerns, Moriska and Gudykunst 1994 mention that "face
in collectivistic cultures is based on the interdependent self construal". In this case, Members of individualistic cultures attention to self–face
maintenance more than members of collectivistic cultures, however, Members of collectivistic cultures attention to other–face more than members of
individualistic culture (Ting–Toomey & Kurogi, 1998). In term of face management, face work tactics are the strategies used to solve problem between
others face and self–face when conflicts are managed (Oetzel et al, 1999). In addition, the politeness is need when we do something attract to the other
face (Brown & Levinson, 1987). Secondly, in term of ethnic difference in face–concerns, when people have different ethnic it can be concerns with
face because people have different identity and it easy to threaten the other face (Kwan & Sodowsky, 1997). However, in each culture and ethnic have
both different and similar in itself.
Lastly, in term of Managing Conflict, according to Ting–Toomey 2004 mentions that "Without

Essay on Conflict Resolution In The Workplace
Over the past year's Mr. Diamond we have had problems with disagreements and conflicts between our employees. I believe it is imperative that we
work at helpful solutions and attempt to stop the conflicts, and limit them as much as possible. I will now present to you my proposal on what the
conflicts are, and a solution to them.
First and foremost we must look at the reasons for the conflict. The goals between the individual and groups of individuals are at times not attainable.
We have some people trying their best to make the goals set by the company in order to make X many dollars per month. Things are so bad on thefloor
that the employees are fighting among themselves trying to attain these at times unrealistic and at...show more content...
I feel if something is not done to correct this situation, there will be things said that will not be able to be taken back, and someone may lose their job
in the process.
As you know there is substantive conflict that can occur in just about any issue, but its moving force is that the two parties simply disagree about an
issue. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. Handled correctly parties in this type of conflict can create for themselves and those around them, the
ability to resolve an issue with something creative, something better than either party's original position.
While substantive conflict, if handled correctly, can be very productive, personalized conflict is almost never a good thing. There are several reasons.
First personalized conflict is fuelled primarily by emotion (usually anger, frustration), and perceptions about someone else's personality, character or
motives. When conflict is personalized and extreme each party acts as if the other is suspect as a person. Second, because personalized conflict is
about emotions and not issues, problem solving almost never works, because neither party is really interested in solving a problem. In fact, there are
times when things may be come worse. Third personalized conflicts almost always get worse over time, if they cannot be converted to substantive
conflict. That is because each person expects problems, looks for them, finds them, and gets angrier.

Reflection On Conflict Resolution
Conflict Resolution Reflection Conflict is inevitable and occurs all around us all the time. Conflict is not about whether something is good or bad,
but what is important is how we deal with this conflict. There are many types of conflict and one prominent conflict that I remember in my life is an
intragroup conflict. This was in grade 10, when I and three others were working on a Business ED project. The conflict was that I had a really good idea
and I was expressing my opinion, but my groupmates were not listening and kept constantly interrupting or calling my idea stupid. This led to a
buildup of a lot of tension between us and therefore affected our teamwork as we ended up not working efficiently towards our goal of a good mark. The
resolution style I used for this particular conflict was avoidance. This is because eventually, I just let my idea go and just did as the other people in
my group said and suppressed my own opinions. This conflict was left unresolved and resulted in us getting a lower mark than expected in the
project. At this point, I was thinking of just submitting to their wants and letting my opinions get put to the side. Although I did not act like I was
angry on the outside, like most other avoiding individuals, I built up my anger by not releasing it, which in the end just went away. Also, I became
less verbal and let the other three lead rather than taking an active role in this project. One advantage of avoiding a conflict is that for a short–term, it
allows us to delay solving and facing the issue, giving us time to think about solutions. Another advantage is that individuals that avoid conflict tend
to help calm the atmosphere down and realize that the conflict will most likely resolve itself, which was also what I believed for my conflict.
However, this tends to make these individuals deny and avoid the conflict entirely, sometimes making it even worse. Also, avoiding a conflict leads to
the opinions and needs of those individuals get suppressed, which also happened to me. Avoiding this conflict led the situation to never get resolved,
and because of this, I still do not really talk to those individuals. So, for this intragroup conflict scenario, I used the conflict resolution

Workplace Conflicts between Team Members Conflict between team members will happen in the workplace because the fact that there will have an
environment where decisions are made and personality clashes will occur. This doesn't mean you have an unproductive workforce, it means you will
have to be able to catch the problem early and know what to do with each individual case. People are going to disagree because they have different
view points, different backgrounds and a different thought process, maybe even a different agenda for that project. People disagree for a number of
reasons (De Bono, 1985). College graduates will be put into positions of uncertainty due to the lack of work history. This will in turn causeconflict, not

Using a third party will introduce new scenarios that will promote new thought process and cause students to look at ways to stop conflict and see it
coming. This helps in the way of making students know that conversation and rationalization will resolve conflict instead of negativity (Freedman &
Adam, 1996). Several situations that cause conflict negatively and positively, here are a few: Ambiguous jurisdiction, unresolved prior conflicts,
Differentiation in organization, Goal incompatibility and conflict of interest, (Filey (1975). There are a great deal of positive outcomes from conflict,
it can bring individuals and groups closer together, open new avenues of thought processes that might have been overlooked. Some companies will
create conflict within a group or team to observe a managers ability to handle the situation. This is a good method of gauging whether he or she can
see the conflict coming and turn it into a constructive learning experience so all team members are positive. More managers are being put in these
positions so they will know the right question to ask or be able to generate the correct situation to defuse the problem before it escalates into a non
productive workforce. Teams also benefit from managers properly handling situations correctly, after awhile teams will pick up on downward spirals
and turn the situations around. All

Essay about Conflict Resolution
Conflict Resolution
Throughout life people should consider developing integrated conflict management systems to prevent and resolve conflict and provide practical
guidelines for designing and implementing such systems. The principles identified in this document can be used to manage external conflict with
customers, clients and the public. Better understanding of people's personality types is the first step in resolving conflict. Group participation is
another area that deserves attention. Understanding the objective of the group will also help to strive towards a common goal, and help to dissolve
conflict. Personalities enter into play in all aspects of life, from the most innocent playground activity in kindergarten to corporate...show more content...
Conflict is detrimental to a group's ability to work together. Although conflict can never be completely avoided, most personality differences can be
worked around if you know how to identify them, understand how they affect the group and learn methods to avoid them. Thompson, Aranda, and
Robbins (2001) write about two main types of conflict. The first type of conflict is; emotional conflict, or sometimes called A–type conflict. This
conflict can threaten productivity. These personality types can take over a group. They bully the other members into accepting their point of view.
They can be overbearing, or use anger to overwhelm any opposition to their ideas. They can be so opinionated that no one else has a chance to speak
up or get their point across. The next type of conflict is; cognitive conflict, or sometimes called C–type conflict. This conflict usually revolves around
the merits of ideas or plans. Although disagreement can occur, this type of conflict can be used to stimulate creativity. Looking at a problem from
different points of view can assist the whole team in problem solving. The method is to attack the idea not the person. This type of conflict usually
benefits team functioning. The goal is to turn A–types personalities into C–types. There are several different ways of achieving that goal. To start with,
each team member must agree on a common plan. Duties should be divided evenly and all team members must hold each

Reflective Essay About Conflict
Conflict is everywhere. Conflict takes place on a daily basis, it takes place when one has no clue they are in conflict until moments later when the
situation is either resolved or if the issue is arising. Others may feel extremely comfortable with dealing with conflict when it takes place; however, in
my personal experience, I've always been one to avoid conflict. It makes me feel uncomfortable due to my past and seeing how my parents would react
when conflict would take place between them. Seeing the violence and harsh communication they had during their marriage that later affected the
entire family. Growing up and dealing with conflict, I faced difficult obstacles and it has prepared for the worst as I gained a few traits in order to
comprehend the ongoing situation. In other words, conflict can generate tremendous amount of energy, but can causedestruction. Others may come out
fighting, trigger danger, and more beyond instincts on how to engage better with conflict instead of responding negatively. Hocker states, "Conflict is a
fact of human life," but little do many realize that conflict tends to take place in different various settings (Hocker & Wilmot, 2014, p. 2). Finding
proper solutions to conflict can be overwhelming from time to time, but as one begins to communicate with the other party, things begin to flow better,
and the problem–solving gets easier.

Essay about Causes and Consequences of Conflict
Encountering Conflict – Secret river
'A conflict's importance lies not in its causes but in its consequences.'
In today's rising society, where we experience people willing to strive to their maximum potential by any means necessary, it becomes blatantly
obvious to why we often overlook the implications we inflict on others. We are sometimes aware of our actions, acting in spite or in fear, and
sometimes ignorant to the situation, unaware of the consequences we deliver. The question is however – where does the importance of conflict lie – in
its causes? Or in its consequences? It seems evident that there are many people will use their spite and fear and perhaps even compassion to
exacerbate conflict. People all too easily become to...show more content...
A question rarely easy to answer, but an important one to decipher. It would be highly ignorant to say that the consequences are the most important
aspect of conflict in all cases when it is evident that the causes play just as big a part.
The Australian Aboriginals themselves had to adjust to survive. They had to find a way to live in this land after they first arrived. If Aboriginals were
not to continue in conflict with the land and the others they shared it with, change became a necessity. Over time they developed a harmonious way to
live and prosper within the limitations of their environment – a harmony that became enshrined within their culture. Modern Society is, at an incredible
rate, exploiting and using up resources, that we will not have the luxury of 40,000 years to find a new way of life in order to survive. Our society
could do worse than to try and learn a little from the first Australians. One only has to look at Kate Grenville's main protagonist in 'The Secret River',
William Thornhill, ending the book on his verandah, gazing wistfully out at the ridge across the river, willing an appearance by people of the
Aboriginal clan he had been instrumental in displacing, and thinking the same thing.
When considering the types of conflicts faced by individuals – personal conflict, interpersonal conflict and extra personal conflict, we must also
acknowledge the moral dilemmas, such as racism or differences with immediate others and

1. International conflict among countries is more likely of what we may think. Today there are many different ongoing conflicts. International conflict

Probably, there will be always conflict among countries impossible to control. However, we humanity has to do something to don let conflicts
transform in war. Conflict may be solved; but it is hard to control the destructive of a war. 2. There are different theories that seek to explain why
humans still fight in war. Some of the individual, state and global level theories of conflict are based on: Human Nature or Individual Leaders,
States' Internal characteristics, and Global Level System (Turetzky lec 11). Human Nature arguments for the causes of war are based in Sigmund
Freud idea that "aggression is simply part of human nature that stems from humans' genetic programming and psychological makeup." Realists also
"argue that violence is a product of bad human nature" and that there is not anything to eliminate this bad human habit. I believe that it is true that
humans' nature is composed with an instinct of violence (War). However, society has a lot to do with the expansion of this bad habit. Today
aggression is embedded in everything, which enforces our acceptance and practice of violence. Obviously, as realists argue, it is almost impossible to
eliminate this bad habit from human nature. In contrast, the individual Leader arguments blame the state leaders for wars. However, we can't blame a
country's leader for war. The author Stoessinger, stated in his book that a state head's perceptions are decisive in war (Stoessinger 65). I believe that a

Dealing With Conflict Essay
Dealing with Conflict
1.1
 Potential conflict can arise when two parties or people have a disagreement on a particular subject. For example, a person may have
said he was going to complete a task which he failed to do which caused conflict with another person or party, or maybe two people who have
different ideas on who to accomplish a task may become heated.
 Stages of conflict are hard to describe in detail but it usually starts with raised voices to get an opinion across which can escalate into a
yelling match as one person tries to get the other person or party to agree with what he is saying. Basically conflict will stop when both parties or people
agree on something, as conflict won't usually end if there...show more content...

3.1 – Factors Effecting Timing & Environment For Communication
Care should be taken in communicating with other in the workplace. Factors such as anger and stress could be dangerous when communicating, as
people are often very temperamental when affected by these factors. Another factor could be the environment, such as a meeting, could hinder
communication as reputations and even jobs could be at stake if in appropriate communication is used. Basically, there is a time and a place for all
various types of communication and care should be taken when talking to our peers and our bosses.
3.2 – Effective Non–Verbal and Verbal Communication
Body Language – This is important as people usually take note of how a person acts and moves. For example, if a person sometimes scratches their
nose when speaking, it could mean to other people that he is trying to cover something up.
Questioning – Never be afraid to question a person for the sake of your own better understanding of a subject. It is different when questioning a
person's ability or understanding of a subject, which could result in conflict.
Language Style – People in work environments need to be able to understand everyone clearly, so correct language and vocabulary needs to be used in

Conflict 2
Organizational conflict is a state of discord caused by the actual or perceived opposition of needs, values and interests between people working together.
Conflict takes many forms in organizations. There is the inevitable clash between formal authority and power and those individuals and groups
affected. There are disputes over how revenues should be divided, how the work should be done, and how long and hard people should work. There are
jurisdictional disagreements among individuals, departments, and between unions and management. There are subtler forms of conflict involving
rivalries, jealousies, personality clashes,...show more content...
From this perspective, conflict occurs as a result of malfunctioning individuals or organizations. Therefore, in order to resolve conflict, problems must
be identified, causes must be analyzed, and those people or situations contributing to the conflict must be "fixed" (Kilmann & Thomas, 1978). This
mechanistic view approaches conflict resolution as a logical, linear process. Robbins comments: "Although research studies now provide strong
evidence to dispute that this approach to conflict reduction results in high group performance, many still evaluate conflict situations utilizing this
outmoded standard" (2001, p. 384).
In the 1950s the emerging human relations view of conflict began to replace the earlier traditional view. The human relations position suggests that
conflict is a natural phenomenon in groups and organizations. Therefore, since it is inevitable, it must be accepted and managed. During this era, the
management literature introduced the term conflict management (Nurmi & Darling, 1997); and, by the 1970s, the field of organization development,
with its tool–kit of team–building interventions, began to go mainstream, thus providing organizations with new resources for dealing with conflict.
Conflict 4
More recently, a third conflict school of thought has emerged, referred to as the interactionist view. This perspective

What does conflict resolution mean to me? Conflict resolution is when an impartial or neutral person puts a plan into action to resolve and settle
issues within an organization or a team. In the business world today a great amount of focus is being placed on employees working as team unit to
increase new ideas, distribute more job responsibilities among a larger group, and most important create a unified front and camaraderie. Along with
advantages there are always disadvantages, wherever there are teams, there is a chance for conflict. Conflict is almost a guarantee. As long as team

It is extremely vital to the livelihood of a team for the team members to be able use conflict resolutions or reach out to another individual who has
conflict resolution skills.
Is conflict constructive or destructive? Conflict can be good for a team if the members involved in the conflict learn some type of lesson about the
issue. It also can create a solution for future problems with different individuals. It can create a sense of unity and fresh ideas on ways to resolve the
conflict. Conflict can also be a very destructive force to an organization if after all is said and done, conflict continues without a resolution. It creates
chaos instead of camaraderie and divides teams or different groups of people. What causes conflict? There are numerous reasons that conflict may arise
within a team. A team with many different people includes many different personalities, cultures, values, attitudes, needs, expectations, etc.
In order to resolve conflict it is very important to follow a few steps:
1. Analyze the reason for the disagreement.
2. Create several solutions or options for all parties involved.
3. Make sure all involved agree on the solution.
4. Implement the solution immediately, time is of the essence.
5. Follow up on the situation

Conflict Essay
CONFLICTS AND DISPUTES ARE INEVITABLE Conflict is defined as the behaviour due to which people differ in their feelings, thought and/or
actions. Collins (1995) states that the conflict is a 'serious disagreement and argument about something important' and also as 'a serious difference
between two or more beliefs, ideas or interests' (cf. Kumaraswamy, 1997, p. 96). In general it is believed that conflicts are the underlying cause of
disputes. In other words, dispute is a manifestation of the deep rooted conflict. A dispute is defined as 'a class or kind of conflict, which manifests
itself in distinct, justifiable issues. It involves disagreement over issues capable of resolution by negotiation, mediation or third party adjudication'

So, it is said that a conflict can exist without a dispute but a dispute cannot exist without a conflict (Spangler and Burgess, 2003). Many authors have

management. Conflicts are ubiquitous where ever a large number of people are involved i.e. where the human relationships proliferate
(Kumaraswamy, 1997). People are the principle resource for any commercial project today. Different project managers, engineers, surveyors
belonging to different organizations and having different needs, goals and each of them looking to maximize their benefits are brought together to

perceived as a negative term but it has both positive and negative sides. Positive conflicts can be helpful to generate new ideas, make innovations,

it and start talking again. A great example of this in my life is me and my friend Quincy. Once when we were talking about my bike accident that I

Conflict in Society
Conflict in Society It is a day to day reality within contemporary society to witness constant conflict among and within social groups. Conflict seems
to be an inevitable part of our society, as it is in many ways hard wired into our biological and psychological selves. Unfortunately, there are, and
always will be, those within society who tend to thrive on conflict, political corruption, and inequality. There are several sociological theories which
attest to how conflict and corruption will always be present within our society, including the theories of left realism and instrumental theory, which
show how conflict will always be present in society because of our extreme socio–economic divides and our inability to work together for a common
goal.
However, still, if the political and social system provided better for those within society, there might well be much less crime especially white collar
crimes that are so demonized by the legal system here in the United States. With less corruption and issues that impact the efficiency of how society
provides for its citizens, there would undoubtedly be less crime and conflict within that particular society. White collar crimes are often "provoked by
an extremely unfair social system and are more accurately interpreted as expressions of rage over unjust economic conditions than as actual crimes"
(Siegel 198). In many ways, this runs true for other types of crime as well, including blue collar crimes where political and corporate

The term conflict referred to perceived incompatible differenced resulting in some form of interference or opposition. Conflict is a natural part of
organizational life because the goals between mangers and workers are often incompatible. If people perceive that differences exist then conflict state
exists. Conflict is not exists between individual only, it also can exist between departments and divisions that compete for resources or even because
of overlapped authority. However, conflict is a force that needed to be managed or to be resolved but can not be eliminated. Unless is fully resolved,

The sources of Conflict The sources of conflict can be basically separated into three categories which are communication differences, structural
differences and personal differences.
Communication differences mean the failure of two individuals to share fully the meaning of a communicative attempt. It is arises from semantic
difficulties, misunderstandings, and noise in communication channels. There maybe disagreements caused by different role requirement, unit goals,
personalities, value systems or other factors.
Since in an organization, people and tasks are divided into departments to accomplish an organizationВЎВ¦s goals, departments may only concern on
their own department efficiency and cost controlling. Therefore, they have incompatible goals and time horizons, as a result there can be conflict. For
example, a production department may have there own production plan to produce a product and avoid paying production workers overtime in order to
cut down costs. However, the Marketing department thinks that it is important to deliver the product to their customer on time and paying overtime to
workers is a kind of responsibility to their customers. Sometimes, there are two or more managers or departments would think that they had authority
over a certain activities or tasks, and claim authority on the same tasks. But most of managers

Conflicts
Conflict means a struggle or problem between two opposing groups or individuals. There are two types of conflict: internal and external conflict. An
internal conflict is a struggle that is internalized and deals with choices, consequences, or emotions. An internal conflict is a man vs. self struggle. An
external conflict is a struggle between the protagonist and another character against nature or some outside force. External conflicts are either man
verses man, man verses nature, or man verses society. Various examples of internal and external conflicts can be shown in Guy de Maupassant's "The
Necklace," Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game," and O.Henry's, "The Gift of the Magi." Firstly, Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace" shows

He is put into a situation where he has to swim until he finds shelter. He swims, and "for a seemingly endless time he fought the sea" (Connell 42).
After a while, he found an island called Ship Trap Island. So, this shows how he fought against nature. Another example of conflict in this story is
when Rainsford has to fight against General Zaroff, who is an expert at hunting humans on Ship Trap Island. As Rainsford gets challenged by
Zaroff, he says, "'Thank you, I'm a hunter, not a murderer'" (49). This shows an example of another external conflict. But, this one is a man verses
man conflict because Rainsford is facing a problem with another character in the story. Therefore, Rainsford faces many situations where he has to
choose between life or death. Lastly, examples of conflict can be shown in "The Gift of the Magi" by O.Henry. This story is about a cute couple
that is willing to do anything to buy each other Christmas presents. An internal conflict faced by Della Young, the protagonist, is when she does not

Reflection Paper On Conflict Management

  • 1. Reflection Paper On Conflict Management CONFLICT MANAGEMENT – my experience There isn't anyone in this world who do not face conflicts. Conflicts arises everywhere in everyone's life, whether be it the home or work place or within one's own mind. No one can avoid conflicts. So we are left with only one option and that is "how tactfully we handle these conflicts". Disagreements and uncertainties are natural in any conflicts. Different opinions and perspectives begin to emerge. This may arise because of a number of reasons like competition for resources, dis–agreement over goals or responsibilities, poor communication, power struggles, or fundamental differences in values, ethics, attitudes, and personalities. Conflicts sounds negative but it isn't necessarily bad. Conflicts can...show more content... I do follow avoidance sometimes but ultimately i am left with unsolved conflicts, which brings me back to either compromising or accommodating or competing level. But avoidance sometimes helps me in a big way as it gives me sufficient time to consider, re–think and then act. I take my time, believe in open talks & try to resolve the conflicts as soon as possible so that i can at peace. Conclusion: Conflicts can be both positive and negative and should be encouraged in work place till a certain degree so as to make the individuals and groups come out of their comfort zone and work on the Zone of concern. The moment the conflict crosses the zone of concern, it becomes a big problem. It has to be handled immediately then or else it can be destructive. It ultimately depends on us as to how we perceive the conflict, whether we take it as an opportunity or a threat. We cannot control our emotions, our ego, our anger, but we can definitely find out the best measure to resolve the conflicts. It is well said by M. Esther Harding that "Conflict is the beginning of consciousness." In short i will just say "Don't fear conflict; embrace it – it's your job". If you understand conflict, you understand

  • 3. Conflict Between Conflict And Conflict For this paper, I chose conflict because it is present in nearly every aspect of life, it is unavoidable, and knowing how to handle it is a valuable tool which I would like to investigate. Webster defines conflict as "A mental struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or external or internal demands", but the reality is there is no clear definition of how conflict starts, no two conflicts are the same, and they all start for different reasons over different issues. There are four types of conflict: Content Conflict – Disagreement caused by differing interpretations of the meaning of a concept or an idea. Values Conflict– Disagreements over management practices which may be value based regarding how employees should be handled and treated. Negotiation of Selves Conflict – Conflicts over how one see themselves versus how they are seen by others. Often people see themselves differently than others see them. Institutionalized conflict – Conflicts that occur due to the structure of a business or organization. Some businesses encourage conflict as a part of their decision making process. (Lamberton & Minor, 2014, p.266) Conflict in the work environment is common. Issues like self–worth, recognition, team dynamics, and compensation; all provide an incubator for conflict. The most common causes for conflict in my opinion are: competition, personality conflicts, people who choose Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. How to Resolve Conflict Essay Conflict is in inevitable part of our everyday lives. Since no two people view things in the exact same manner, disagreement will most certainly arise at some point in time. Conflict is simply a difference of opinion and is considered to be a normal part of our everyday lives. There are several different forms of conflict and not all of them are considered to be bad. This paper will discuss the causes of conflict, the different types of conflict, and barriers to conflict. According to Communication Research Associates, conflict is a condition of imbalance within an individual (Communication Research Associates, 2005, p. 178). Keep in mind that just as there are disadvantages to conflict, there are also several advantages. In order to...show more content... For example, if you are at work and walk by someone's desk and accidently knock their pen on the floor. All of sudden, the person lashes out and starts to curse at you. Knowing that this is not the norm for your coworker, it would safe to assume that they are under some form of stress or have other things on their mind. By knowing this, it becomes easier to respond in a more responsible, tempered, and appropriate, manner. Sometimes ego can become a cause for conflict as well. There may come a time when someone is wrong about something or they may have made a mistake but they refuse to admit it. Because they have such a high ego, they may become self–protective of their situation, therefore causing conflict because they refuse to admit they were wrong. Instead they may choose to become persistent in standing their ground, whether they are right or wrong. During communication, if the intended goals are not clearly identified, there is a greater possibility for error and it could further aggravate a situation, causing conflict. Because each individual is different there are bound to be clashes within certain personality types. For example, if someone prefers to discuss everything in detail and I prefer to get straight to the point then we could have a personality clash because we are not seeing things eye–to–eye. They may view me as being incompetent or irresponsible while I would Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay on Conflict and Communication Conflict and Communication Conflict can happen anytime of your life, it will happen matter you want it or not. In addition, it can have both negative and positive impacts for our relationship (Gudykunst, 2004). According to Yi–Feng 2007, she mentions that conflict is "incompatible activities, where one person's actions are interfering, obstructing, or in other ways making the behavior of another less effective". In term of nature of conflict, conflict is a cause which happens by threatened human needs problem (Kelman, 2002). The sources of conflict can divide into three things, there are misinterpret, disagree and perceptions of incompatibilities (Roloff, 1987). In addition the way of people approach to managing conflict is depend on culture and ethnic (Ting–Toomey, 1985). For example, Asian use avoiding, integrating and obliging to approach but European and American use dominating. In term of face and conflict, we can divide in two parts. Firstly, cultural differences in face–concerns, Moriska and Gudykunst 1994 mention that "face in collectivistic cultures is based on the interdependent self construal". In this case, Members of individualistic cultures attention to self–face maintenance more than members of collectivistic cultures, however, Members of collectivistic cultures attention to other–face more than members of individualistic culture (Ting–Toomey & Kurogi, 1998). In term of face management, face work tactics are the strategies used to solve problem between others face and self–face when conflicts are managed (Oetzel et al, 1999). In addition, the politeness is need when we do something attract to the other face (Brown & Levinson, 1987). Secondly, in term of ethnic difference in face–concerns, when people have different ethnic it can be concerns with face because people have different identity and it easy to threaten the other face (Kwan & Sodowsky, 1997). However, in each culture and ethnic have both different and similar in itself. • 6. Essay on Conflict Resolution In The Workplace Over the past year's Mr. Diamond we have had problems with disagreements and conflicts between our employees. I believe it is imperative that we work at helpful solutions and attempt to stop the conflicts, and limit them as much as possible. I will now present to you my proposal on what the conflicts are, and a solution to them. First and foremost we must look at the reasons for the conflict. The goals between the individual and groups of individuals are at times not attainable. We have some people trying their best to make the goals set by the company in order to make X many dollars per month. Things are so bad on thefloor that the employees are fighting among themselves trying to attain these at times unrealistic and at...show more content... I feel if something is not done to correct this situation, there will be things said that will not be able to be taken back, and someone may lose their job in the process. As you know there is substantive conflict that can occur in just about any issue, but its moving force is that the two parties simply disagree about an issue. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. Handled correctly parties in this type of conflict can create for themselves and those around them, the ability to resolve an issue with something creative, something better than either party's original position. While substantive conflict, if handled correctly, can be very productive, personalized conflict is almost never a good thing. There are several reasons. First personalized conflict is fuelled primarily by emotion (usually anger, frustration), and perceptions about someone else's personality, character or motives. When conflict is personalized and extreme each party acts as if the other is suspect as a person. Second, because personalized conflict is about emotions and not issues, problem solving almost never works, because neither party is really interested in solving a problem. In fact, there are times when things may be come worse. Third personalized conflicts almost always get worse over time, if they cannot be converted to substantive conflict. That is because each person expects problems, looks for them, finds them, and gets angrier. In order to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Reflection On Conflict Resolution Conflict Resolution Reflection Conflict is inevitable and occurs all around us all the time. Conflict is not about whether something is good or bad, but what is important is how we deal with this conflict. There are many types of conflict and one prominent conflict that I remember in my life is an intragroup conflict. This was in grade 10, when I and three others were working on a Business ED project. The conflict was that I had a really good idea and I was expressing my opinion, but my groupmates were not listening and kept constantly interrupting or calling my idea stupid. This led to a buildup of a lot of tension between us and therefore affected our teamwork as we ended up not working efficiently towards our goal of a good mark. The resolution style I used for this particular conflict was avoidance. This is because eventually, I just let my idea go and just did as the other people in my group said and suppressed my own opinions. This conflict was left unresolved and resulted in us getting a lower mark than expected in the project. At this point, I was thinking of just submitting to their wants and letting my opinions get put to the side. Although I did not act like I was angry on the outside, like most other avoiding individuals, I built up my anger by not releasing it, which in the end just went away. Also, I became less verbal and let the other three lead rather than taking an active role in this project. One advantage of avoiding a conflict is that for a short–term, it allows us to delay solving and facing the issue, giving us time to think about solutions. Another advantage is that individuals that avoid conflict tend to help calm the atmosphere down and realize that the conflict will most likely resolve itself, which was also what I believed for my conflict. However, this tends to make these individuals deny and avoid the conflict entirely, sometimes making it even worse. Also, avoiding a conflict leads to the opinions and needs of those individuals get suppressed, which also happened to me. Avoiding this conflict led the situation to never get resolved, and because of this, I still do not really talk to those individuals. So, for this intragroup conflict scenario, I used the conflict resolution Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Essay on Workplace Conflict Workplace Conflicts between Team Members Conflict between team members will happen in the workplace because the fact that there will have an environment where decisions are made and personality clashes will occur. This doesn't mean you have an unproductive workforce, it means you will have to be able to catch the problem early and know what to do with each individual case. People are going to disagree because they have different view points, different backgrounds and a different thought process, maybe even a different agenda for that project. People disagree for a number of reasons (De Bono, 1985). College graduates will be put into positions of uncertainty due to the lack of work history. This will in turn causeconflict, not knowing...show more content... Using a third party will introduce new scenarios that will promote new thought process and cause students to look at ways to stop conflict and see it coming. This helps in the way of making students know that conversation and rationalization will resolve conflict instead of negativity (Freedman & Adam, 1996). Several situations that cause conflict negatively and positively, here are a few: Ambiguous jurisdiction, unresolved prior conflicts, Differentiation in organization, Goal incompatibility and conflict of interest, (Filey (1975). There are a great deal of positive outcomes from conflict, it can bring individuals and groups closer together, open new avenues of thought processes that might have been overlooked. Some companies will create conflict within a group or team to observe a managers ability to handle the situation. This is a good method of gauging whether he or she can see the conflict coming and turn it into a constructive learning experience so all team members are positive. More managers are being put in these positions so they will know the right question to ask or be able to generate the correct situation to defuse the problem before it escalates into a non productive workforce. Teams also benefit from managers properly handling situations correctly, after awhile teams will pick up on downward spirals and turn the situations around. All Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Essay about Conflict Resolution Conflict Resolution Throughout life people should consider developing integrated conflict management systems to prevent and resolve conflict and provide practical guidelines for designing and implementing such systems. The principles identified in this document can be used to manage external conflict with customers, clients and the public. Better understanding of people's personality types is the first step in resolving conflict. Group participation is another area that deserves attention. Understanding the objective of the group will also help to strive towards a common goal, and help to dissolve conflict. Personalities enter into play in all aspects of life, from the most innocent playground activity in kindergarten to corporate...show more content... Conflict is detrimental to a group's ability to work together. Although conflict can never be completely avoided, most personality differences can be worked around if you know how to identify them, understand how they affect the group and learn methods to avoid them. Thompson, Aranda, and Robbins (2001) write about two main types of conflict. The first type of conflict is; emotional conflict, or sometimes called A–type conflict. This conflict can threaten productivity. These personality types can take over a group. They bully the other members into accepting their point of view. They can be overbearing, or use anger to overwhelm any opposition to their ideas. They can be so opinionated that no one else has a chance to speak up or get their point across. The next type of conflict is; cognitive conflict, or sometimes called C–type conflict. This conflict usually revolves around the merits of ideas or plans. Although disagreement can occur, this type of conflict can be used to stimulate creativity. Looking at a problem from different points of view can assist the whole team in problem solving. The method is to attack the idea not the person. This type of conflict usually benefits team functioning. The goal is to turn A–types personalities into C–types. There are several different ways of achieving that goal. To start with, each team member must agree on a common plan. Duties should be divided evenly and all team members must hold each Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Reflective Essay About Conflict Conflict is everywhere. Conflict takes place on a daily basis, it takes place when one has no clue they are in conflict until moments later when the situation is either resolved or if the issue is arising. Others may feel extremely comfortable with dealing with conflict when it takes place; however, in my personal experience, I've always been one to avoid conflict. It makes me feel uncomfortable due to my past and seeing how my parents would react when conflict would take place between them. Seeing the violence and harsh communication they had during their marriage that later affected the entire family. Growing up and dealing with conflict, I faced difficult obstacles and it has prepared for the worst as I gained a few traits in order to comprehend the ongoing situation. In other words, conflict can generate tremendous amount of energy, but can causedestruction. Others may come out fighting, trigger danger, and more beyond instincts on how to engage better with conflict instead of responding negatively. Hocker states, "Conflict is a fact of human life," but little do many realize that conflict tends to take place in different various settings (Hocker & Wilmot, 2014, p. 2). Finding proper solutions to conflict can be overwhelming from time to time, but as one begins to communicate with the other party, things begin to flow better, and the problem–solving gets easier. • 11. Essay about Causes and Consequences of Conflict Encountering Conflict – Secret river 'A conflict's importance lies not in its causes but in its consequences.' In today's rising society, where we experience people willing to strive to their maximum potential by any means necessary, it becomes blatantly obvious to why we often overlook the implications we inflict on others. We are sometimes aware of our actions, acting in spite or in fear, and sometimes ignorant to the situation, unaware of the consequences we deliver. The question is however – where does the importance of conflict lie – in its causes? Or in its consequences? It seems evident that there are many people will use their spite and fear and perhaps even compassion to exacerbate conflict. People all too easily become to...show more content... A question rarely easy to answer, but an important one to decipher. It would be highly ignorant to say that the consequences are the most important aspect of conflict in all cases when it is evident that the causes play just as big a part. The Australian Aboriginals themselves had to adjust to survive. They had to find a way to live in this land after they first arrived. If Aboriginals were not to continue in conflict with the land and the others they shared it with, change became a necessity. Over time they developed a harmonious way to live and prosper within the limitations of their environment – a harmony that became enshrined within their culture. Modern Society is, at an incredible rate, exploiting and using up resources, that we will not have the luxury of 40,000 years to find a new way of life in order to survive. Our society could do worse than to try and learn a little from the first Australians. One only has to look at Kate Grenville's main protagonist in 'The Secret River', William Thornhill, ending the book on his verandah, gazing wistfully out at the ridge across the river, willing an appearance by people of the Aboriginal clan he had been instrumental in displacing, and thinking the same thing. When considering the types of conflicts faced by individuals – personal conflict, interpersonal conflict and extra personal conflict, we must also acknowledge the moral dilemmas, such as racism or differences with immediate others and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Essay on International Conflict 1. International conflict among countries is more likely of what we may think. Today there are many different ongoing conflicts. International conflict is a stage of opposition, disagreement or incompatibility between two or more states (Malek). The term "international conflict" referred to conflicts between different nations and conflicts between people and organizations in different nations (Mr. Turetzky lec 11). It also applies to inter –group conflicts within one country when one group is fighting for independence or increased social, political, or economic power. Probably, there will be always conflict among countries impossible to control. However, we humanity has to do something to don let conflicts transform in war. Conflict may be solved; but it is hard to control the destructive of a war. 2. There are different theories that seek to explain why humans still fight in war. Some of the individual, state and global level theories of conflict are based on: Human Nature or Individual Leaders, States' Internal characteristics, and Global Level System (Turetzky lec 11). Human Nature arguments for the causes of war are based in Sigmund Freud idea that "aggression is simply part of human nature that stems from humans' genetic programming and psychological makeup." Realists also "argue that violence is a product of bad human nature" and that there is not anything to eliminate this bad human habit. I believe that it is true that humans' nature is composed with an instinct of violence (War). However, society has a lot to do with the expansion of this bad habit. Today aggression is embedded in everything, which enforces our acceptance and practice of violence. Obviously, as realists argue, it is almost impossible to eliminate this bad habit from human nature. In contrast, the individual Leader arguments blame the state leaders for wars. However, we can't blame a country's leader for war. The author Stoessinger, stated in his book that a state head's perceptions are decisive in war (Stoessinger 65). I believe that a leader's Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 15. Essay on Organizational Conflict Conflict 1 Organizational Conflict: The three views Organizational Conflict: The three views Conflict 2 Organizational conflict is a state of discord caused by the actual or perceived opposition of needs, values and interests between people working together. Conflict takes many forms in organizations. There is the inevitable clash between formal authority and power and those individuals and groups affected. There are disputes over how revenues should be divided, how the work should be done, and how long and hard people should work. There are jurisdictional disagreements among individuals, departments, and between unions and management. There are subtler forms of conflict involving rivalries, jealousies, personality clashes,...show more content... From this perspective, conflict occurs as a result of malfunctioning individuals or organizations. Therefore, in order to resolve conflict, problems must be identified, causes must be analyzed, and those people or situations contributing to the conflict must be "fixed" (Kilmann & Thomas, 1978). This mechanistic view approaches conflict resolution as a logical, linear process. Robbins comments: "Although research studies now provide strong evidence to dispute that this approach to conflict reduction results in high group performance, many still evaluate conflict situations utilizing this outmoded standard" (2001, p. 384). In the 1950s the emerging human relations view of conflict began to replace the earlier traditional view. The human relations position suggests that conflict is a natural phenomenon in groups and organizations. Therefore, since it is inevitable, it must be accepted and managed. During this era, the management literature introduced the term conflict management (Nurmi & Darling, 1997); and, by the 1970s, the field of organization development, with its tool–kit of team–building interventions, began to go mainstream, thus providing organizations with new resources for dealing with conflict. Conflict 4 More recently, a third conflict school of thought has emerged, referred to as the interactionist view. This perspective

Is conflict constructive or destructive? Conflict can be good for a team if the members involved in the conflict learn some type of lesson about the issue. It also can create a solution for future problems with different individuals. It can create a sense of unity and fresh ideas on ways to resolve the conflict. Conflict can also be a very destructive force to an organization if after all is said and done, conflict continues without a resolution. It creates chaos instead of camaraderie and divides teams or different groups of people. What causes conflict? There are numerous reasons that conflict may arise within a team. A team with many different people includes many different personalities, cultures, values, attitudes, needs, expectations, etc. In order to resolve conflict it is very important to follow a few steps: 1. Analyze the reason for the disagreement. 2. Create several solutions or options for all parties involved. 3. Make sure all involved agree on the solution. 4. • 18. Conflict Essay CONFLICTS AND DISPUTES ARE INEVITABLE Conflict is defined as the behaviour due to which people differ in their feelings, thought and/or actions. Collins (1995) states that the conflict is a 'serious disagreement and argument about something important' and also as 'a serious difference between two or more beliefs, ideas or interests' (cf. Kumaraswamy, 1997, p. 96). In general it is believed that conflicts are the underlying cause of disputes. In other words, dispute is a manifestation of the deep rooted conflict. Many authors have highlighted the inevitability of conflicts on the other hand it is said that disputes can be prevented or at least can be minimized through proper management. Conflicts are ubiquitous where ever a large number of people are involved i.e. where the human relationships proliferate (Kumaraswamy, 1997). People are the principle resource for any commercial project today. Different project managers, engineers, surveyors belonging to different organizations and having different needs, goals and each of them looking to maximize their benefits are brought together to form a team. Because of these differences in the individuals the conflicts and disputes become inevitable in a project. Conflicts are generally perceived as a negative term but it has both positive and negative sides. Positive conflicts can be helpful to generate new ideas, make innovations, helps people to 'Be real' and creative. • 19. Definition Essay Conflict Conflict is a serious disagreement or argument that can happen often. The result of a conflict depends on how high the situation escalates. Me and my little brother get into conflicts pretty often over dumb things. Usually when my brother and I get into a conflict we get in trouble for fighting and get things taken away or end up getting grounded. In other instances, with my friends we stop talking for a little while and eventually get over it and start talking again. A great example of this in my life is me and my friend Quincy. Once when we were talking about my bike accident that I had like 7 months ago he said it was a gap. I said it wasn't and then we got into a conflict about it. • 20. Conflict in Society Conflict in Society It is a day to day reality within contemporary society to witness constant conflict among and within social groups. Conflict seems to be an inevitable part of our society, as it is in many ways hard wired into our biological and psychological selves. Unfortunately, there are, and always will be, those within society who tend to thrive on conflict, political corruption, and inequality. There are several sociological theories which attest to how conflict and corruption will always be present within our society, including the theories of left realism and instrumental theory, which show how conflict will always be present in society because of our extreme socio–economic divides and our inability to work together for a common goal. However, still, if the political and social system provided better for those within society, there might well be much less crime especially white collar crimes that are so demonized by the legal system here in the United States. With less corruption and issues that impact the efficiency of how society provides for its citizens, there would undoubtedly be less crime and conflict within that particular society. White collar crimes are often "provoked by an extremely unfair social system and are more accurately interpreted as expressions of rage over unjust economic conditions than as actual crimes" (Siegel 198). In many ways, this runs true for other types of crime as well, including blue collar crimes where political and corporate Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 22. Conflicts Conflict means a struggle or problem between two opposing groups or individuals. There are two types of conflict: internal and external conflict. An internal conflict is a struggle that is internalized and deals with choices, consequences, or emotions. An internal conflict is a man vs. self struggle. An external conflict is a struggle between the protagonist and another character against nature or some outside force. External conflicts are either man verses man, man verses nature, or man verses society. Various examples of internal and external conflicts can be shown in Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace," Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game," and O.Henry's, "The Gift of the Magi." Firstly, Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace" shows ...show more content... He is put into a situation where he has to swim until he finds shelter. He swims, and "for a seemingly endless time he fought the sea" (Connell 42). After a while, he found an island called Ship Trap Island. So, this shows how he fought against nature. Another example of conflict in this story is when Rainsford has to fight against General Zaroff, who is an expert at hunting humans on Ship Trap Island. As Rainsford gets challenged by Zaroff, he says, "'Thank you, I'm a hunter, not a murderer'" (49). This shows an example of another external conflict. But, this one is a man verses man conflict because Rainsford is facing a problem with another character in the story. Therefore, Rainsford faces many situations where he has to choose between life or death. Lastly, examples of conflict can be shown in "The Gift of the Magi" by O.Henry. This story is about a cute couple that is willing to do anything to buy each other Christmas presents. An internal conflict faced by Della Young, the protagonist, is when she does not have enough money to buy her husband Jim a present. All Della had was "one dollar and eighty seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas" (O. Henry 153). To get more money, Della sells her most prized possession, which is her hair. After Della and Jim finally bought their presents by selling their most prized possessions, another conflict arose.
