1
Andnow, brothers and sisters, we want youto
knowabout the grace that Godhas given the
Macedonianchurches.
2 In the midst of a very severe trial, their
overflowingjoy andtheir extreme poverty welled
up inrich generosity.
3For I testify that they gave as much as they were
able,and even beyondtheir ability.Entirelyon
their own,
3. 4
they urgently pleadedwith us for the
privilegeof sharing in this serviceto the
Lord’s people.
5 Andthey exceededour expectations:They
gavethemselvesfirst of allto the Lord,and
then by the will of Godalso to us.
6 Sowe urged Titus, just as he hadearliermade
a beginning, to bring also tocompletionthis
actof graceon your part.
4. 7
Butsince you excel in everything—in faith,in speech,
in knowledge, in complete earnestness andin the love
we have kindledin you—see that you alsoexcel in
thisgrace of giving.
8 I am not commandingyou, butI want to test the
sincerity of your loveby comparing it with the
earnestness of others.
9 For you knowthe grace of ourLord Jesus Christ,
thatthoughhe was rich, yet for yoursake he
became poor,so that you throughhis poverty
might becomerich.
5. 10
And here is my judgmentabout what is best for
you inthis matter. Last year youwere the first not
onlyto give but also to have the desire to do so.
11 Now finish the work, so that your eager
willingnessto do itmay be matched byyour
completionof it,accordingto your means.
12 For if the willingnessis there, the gift is
acceptable accordingto what one has, not
accordingto what onedoesnot have.
6. 13
Our desire is not that others might be relieved
whileyouare hard pressed, butthat there might
be equality.
14
At the present time your plentywillsupplywhat
they need,so that in turn their plentywillsupply
what youneed.The goal is equality,
15 as it is written: “The one whogathered much did
not have toomuch,andthe onewhogathered
little didnot have too little.”
