2. Introduction:
Inadequate bowel preparation has a detrimental effect on all aspects of the
colonoscopy procedure& especially, on its accuracy.
It has been associated with significantly lower rates of detection of
adenomas & advanced adenomas.
A threefold higher miss rate for adenomas ≥ 5mm in size when bowel
cleansing was inadequate.
Inadequate bowel preparation is also one of the most unfavorable
predictors for cecal intubation failure&unsatisfactory patient experience.
It results in shorter colonoscopy surveillance intervals, longer hosp stays&
increased healthcare costs render screening colonoscopy cost-ineffective.
For these reasons, a ≥ 90% minimum standard for adequate bowel
preparation (assessed using validated scales) has been recently
recommended by the Quality Committee of the ESGE.
Additional evidence published on the efficacy & safety of different aspects
of bowel preparation, including diet, timing& type of laxative, patient
information & specific scenarios.
