1. DPI VISTA/CESA COLLABORATION
Supporting Students Experiencing Homelessness in WI
SUMMARY OF PROGRAM
The DPI VISTA program will focus on building capacity
through the CESAs to better serve homeless students in
Wisconsin. This will include building awareness of
homelessness and coordinating service providers and public
schools. The VISTAs will work with community partners in
their region to determine what services are available and where
needs exist for homeless students, keeping a focus on academic
support programs for students
The project will address a need for greater academic support to
students experiencing homelessness in Wisconsin
VISTAs will work through the CESAs to coordinate efforts
with districts. VISTAs will be expected to work with any
districts in the CESA receiving McKinney-Vento sub grants to
coordinate services and trainings for surrounding districts, to
spread best practices, and to help expand current efforts.
These efforts are not limited to districts with McKinney-Vento
sub-grants.
VISTAs will conduct needs assessments & asset mapping,
coordinate homeless liaison meetings at CESA, and create
resource lists and awareness materials to distribute.
VISTAs in the first year will begin a mentoring program with
one district. This will be expanded upon in subsequent years.
2014-2015
VISTA volunteers will be placed at a CESA host site.
