Dear Community,
After a thoughtful and inclusive process with our stakeholders,
Board of Directors, and staff, we are excited to announce that
ACCESS is embarking on our 2022-2024 Strategic Plan. As part
of our plan, we have refined our mission statement to better
reflect what we do and how we do it.
Our new mission statement is, “Through partnerships and
service, ACCESS provides food, warmth, and shelter to
promote stability for vulnerable populations.”
We have also redefined our vision as “Food, warmth, and
shelter for all.” These are the core tenants that drive us and
our work.
Together, we can respond to the ongoing and emergent
needs of our community and ensure our most vulnerable
neighbors have access to safe and affordable housing,
can pay their energy bills, and are able to put nutritious
food on their tables. Without the support of our generous
donors, corporate partners, volunteers, nonprofit partners
foundations, and government agencies, this work would not
be possible. It takes all of us to build a stronger, more resilient
community and there is nothing we cannot achieve when we
work together. On behalf of all of us at ACCESS and those we
serve, thank you for your continued support.

The Center for Community Resilience (CCR), a vital
community resource helping fire-impacted households
navigate housing needs, is excited to welcome new key
staff members to the assistance team. The addition of Matt
Havniear, CCR Program Manager, and Laura Gardner, CCR
Supervisor, provides a robust and well-rounded housing
recovery team for those still trying to recover from the 2020
wildfire disasters.
In addition to Matt and Laura, the CCR is staffed with
case managers helping survivors navigate the process
of securing housing solutions. “We are problem solvers,
that’s our charge,” says Carrie Borgen Executive Director at
ACCESS, “and we are laser-focused on helping people find
stable housing.”
CCR staff, alongside Oregon Department of Human Services
(OHDS) Disaster Case Managers and Oregon Housing and
Community Services (OHCS), are utilizing flexible resources
and creative solutions to house survivors. “With the lack of
affordable housing and a low vacancy rate, we have to be
creative,” says Joe Vollmer, Housing Director for ACCESS.
Working directly with landlords, exploring home-sharing
options, and offering a wide array of services for both
tenants and homeowners are examples of these creative
approaches.
The CCR is an ACCESS program helping fire-impacted
households find housing solutions. It is made possible by
a grant and support from Oregon Housing and Community
Services, as well as from donors and through corporate
partnerships.
If you or someone you know needs assistance, please call

Schools are often a touchstone for communities and
can be an avenue for people to re-connect after a
disaster. The Phoenix-Talent School District (PTS) has
been providing that kind of support after the 2020
fires devastated their community, and ACCESS is
humbled by the opportunity to play a part in that. The
ACCESS Food Bank has been providing food, hygiene
products, and cleaning supplies to help students and
their families as they navigate fire recovery during the
COVID pandemic.
In August, PTS asked ACCESS if we could provide items
to families who were moving into the Coleman Creek
Estates FEMA trailer park. Thanks to the partnership
between ACCESS and PTS, families were welcomed
with a basket of cleaning supplies and hygiene
products to help them settle into their new transitional
homes. ACCESS also provided bottled water and
snacks for students attending day camp during the
summer months.

“The Food Pantry really helps supplement my food stamps. I
have been helping three extra people with housing because of
the housing shortage and I feed them as well. It truly helps!”
Fill a Grocery Bag to Help Fight
Hunger in Jackson County!
With the cooler weather upon
us and the holiday season
just around the corner, it’s
the time of year that many
residents of Jackson County
are faced with the reality of
not having enough to eat.
ACCESS is partnering with
the Mail Tribune to ask the
community to help fill the
shelves of our 18 local food
pantries to provide food to our
neighbors in need.
Keep an eye out for our
grocery bag in the Mail
Tribune on Sunday, November
21st
to fill with non-perishable food and drop off at
any of our community partners listed on the bag.
ACCESS relies on generous donations from community
members like you to help feed those in need. Thank
you, Jackson County, for your support!

ate never anticipated he would need to reach out
for help to keep his house and avoid homelessness.
However, when Nate suddenly became a single father
in mid-2019, that’s exactly where he found himself.
With the help of ACCESS and the Supportive Services for Veteran
Families (SSVF) program, Nate and his family have overcome
tremendous struggles and are now living in safe, stable housing.
After an unexpected family situation and the loss of a main
source of income, Nate called ACCESS hoping to receive
assistance for rent and a utility bill. ACCESS was able to help
with those payments and his case manager saw an opportunity
to provide the family with even more stability. Through the SSVF
program, ACCESS was able to repair his vehicle, his main source
of transportation, and obtain improved housing for him and his
daughters. These life-changing services have helped Nate and his girls discover their family passion: growing
food in their garden, cooking together, and preserving the food they’ve grown.
Nate’s case manager describes him as a dedicated father whose main focus is to help create stability and
opportunities for his daughters. “Throughout the entire process, Nate always stayed positive. He has always
expressed his utmost gratitude towards ACCESS and is thankful for the assistance we’ve been able to provide.”
Supportive Services for Veteran Families is a program administered by ACCESS, providing a variety of vital
services to veterans- including housing assistance, utility bill assistance, job resources, childcare assistance,
educational opportunities and more. Nate and his daughters are so grateful for the community’s support.

In September, Melanie Doshier, Director of Support Services, was presented
with the United States Department of Defense Employer Support of the Guard
and Reserve Patriot Award. This award is presented to individual supervisors
who support Reservists and Guardsmen through a variety of measures, including
flexible scheduling, time off for deployment, and general care for their wellbeing.
We are proud that our Guardsman employees are able to serve both our country
and our community in a meaningful way while ACCESS supports their efforts
on both fronts. Congratulations to Melanie and her team for fostering an
environment of support here at ACCESS!

Generous donors Bill and Jane Bardin have
consistently supported ACCESS for years in a very
thoughtful and strategic way: They first wanted
to know what our community needs are and then
understand how their donation will make a lasting
difference to help meet those needs.
Jane shares, “We have two goals for our charitable
donations: Shelter and Food. With the fires in 2020,
we were able to make numerous donations to help
families who lost their homes find housing. In 2021, I
asked Kellie Battaglia [ACCESS Advancement Director]
for suggestions and found that a new forklift for their
Food Bank was their greatest need. By purchasing the
piece of equipment, we are able to provide help for
a more efficient distribution of food that will last for
many years.”
The Bardins chose to donate stock, which allowed
ACCESS to purchase a new forklift and provided a tax
benefit for them. We can now load and unload food
more quickly and safely to get it to hungry families
in our community. We could not feed 1 in 5 Jackson
County residents without the support of caring people
like the Bardins.
If you would like to learn more about how you can
help support ACCESS programs, please contact Kellie
Battaglia at (458) 488-1240 or email her at
kbattaglia@accesshelps.org.
Did you know a monthly donation of just $20 would
provide 960 meals annually to the community?
ACCESS Community Builders are a remarkable group of monthly donors who
are united in helping ACCESS feed, warm, and shelter those in need. They
provide ongoing, impactful donations that we can rely on consistently to
administer our programs and serve the local community.
Interested in joining this special group? Exciting perks will be revealed in 2022
