IFFL CREATOR & COMMISSIONER BRIAN SLACK PRE-DRAFT Q&A
(Opening statements)
I’d like to begin by saying thank you to all twelve of our IFFL team owners, fantasy football fans, our sponsors and local, national, and
international sports media for your past and hopefully future interest in the International Fantasy Football League.
On Saturday, July 17th, the International Fantasy Football League will conduct its 7th Annual Draft. At exactly 4 p.m., London time, the
United Kingdom’s Jason Ruth and the Bowl Bound Mavericks will officially be on the clock and will have 2 minutes to determine which
NFL player will be this year’s #1 pick.
I am overjoyed to announce that for the third-straight year we have all twelve IFFL team owners returning. That speaks volumes for the
league when a group of 11 men and 1 woman from seven different nations can come together, build a bond, a camaraderie, and all
with one common goal in mind, and that is to be crowned World Champion of NFL Fantasy Football. Speaking of the world, as it comes
closer and closer to blowing itself up, we dance!
There are a total of 4 changes I’d like to bring to your attention going into the 2021 season.
Mexico’s Rene Chavez has changed his team’s name, Lonely Star, to the Dragones.
Secondly, Australia’s Joshua Mann and his StormOZ will from hence forth be referred to as Joshua Mann and StormyOZ.
The 3rd change is any converted field goals beyond the 50-yard line will count as 5 points, instead of 8.
Finally, with the additional week added to the 2021 NFL schedule, so it is with the IFFL. Instead of 13 weeks, there are now 14.
(On if the IFFL has any future plans to expanding to 14 teams)
No. Everything is perfect just the way it is. Like I said, all twelve teams are coming back for the third-straight season. Having twelve
teams compete is difficult enough. Ask anyone who plays it. Twelve teams require less luck and more skill than a 14-team league. If
you are competing in a 14-team league and a couple of your players go down early, well, there isn’t a heckuva lot of talent in the free
agent pool. In fact, that talent pool is more like a puddle. You sense feelings of helpless and desperation. Your situation is hopeless.
3. That is a sick, sinking feeling.
(On if the IFFL Draft be live on the internet)
Yes and no…mostly no. I will be doing a couple of Facebook Live updates, one before the draft begins, one at the halfway point
between rounds 8-9, and a series of updates as post-draft information is analyzed. Some of the team owners have also expressed
interest in doing live updates. The problem for me and probably for the other team owners is doing anything additional that can be a
distraction from the draft is not a good idea. Potentially, 90% of how your team does during the season is determined by the draft.
These team owners know what they are doing. No green horns, here. The IFFL is extremely competitive; certainly, the most competitive
I have ever competed in.
(On if Brian will come out of retirement and finally broadcast the IFFL)
I’m not willing to say but so much at this time, but, actually, that’s part of what was going on behind-the-scenes during this off-season.
Problem was, at least in my opinion, both sides got the ball rolling way too late to have adequate time to hammer out a fair deal. That
was my fault. I will be bringing the IFFL endeavor back to the negotiating table upon the completion of Super Bowl LVI. At that time, I
will be giving this unnamed major radio network exclusive opportunity to bring the IFFL to their sports lineup in 2022. If things don’t work
out the second go-around, then it just wasn’t meant to be. It wasn’t part of my destiny and I will be content to walk away permanently
from broadcasting.
(On if Brian or the other IFFL team owners compete in multiple leagues)
I don’t. Some of the other team owners do. But, if you were to ask them, they would say that the IFFL is the filet mignon of fantasy
football. We have built ourselves as the world’s most renown and revered fantasy football league- bar none. Our league champion is
recognized by 52 nations abroad as the true world champion. Myself, I have been managing just one fantasy team since 2016. In the
IFFL’s first season in 2015, I managed two teams. I made it to the other league’s championship game and lost, after winning it in 2014.
Different story with my IFFL team, where my Mighty Cyclones finished dead-last out of ten teams, with a humiliating 4-9-0 record. I
didn’t have to tell myself twice to dump the other team and concentrate full-time on the international version of the Mighty Cyclones.
Since then, the Mighty Cyclones have piled up a 39-26 record in the last 5 years, including 12-1 and the world title, last season.
(On which players Brian sees having breakout seasons)
Pertaining to running backs, I think Saquan Barkley and D’Andre Swift. After two disappointing seasons hampered by injuries, I truly
believe this will be the year we see Barkley live up to all the hype; maybe even exceeding those expectations. Swift has the potential to
become one of the league’s most electrifying multi-faceted backs. In his first year with Motown, he averaged close to 15 fantasy points
a game. He really went off against one of the best defenses in the league, namely the Washington Redskins. In that game, Swift scored
I think it was something like 24 or 25 points. Wide receiver wise, it’s gotta be Cincinnati’s La’Marr Chase. What a stud. Even though
Chase has yet to play a single play in the pros, I suspect he’s going to come out of the gates like gangbusters. As you know, he’s
reuniting with former LSU teammate Joe Burrow. I’m a lifelong LSU fan and I realize it will still take time for things to jell in the ‘Natti. But
when Chase and Burrow start clicking again, I think both Tigers and Bengals fans will have every reason to get excited, and hopefully
for many years to come.
(On what impact Covid 19 had on the NFL and how this season will be any different)
Well, let’s see, over 75% of the players tested positive, and even head coaches Sean Payton, Doug Pederson, Anthony Lynn, and Jon
Gruden contracted the deadly virus in 2020. Let’s take a look at Ezekiel Elliott and Lamar Jackson. Once they came back after testing
positive, both of them looked rather ordinary, a stark contrast to their super-human feats. I’ve always felt that even folks who are A-
symptomatic are physically or even mentally effected in some way. Even the vaccines, themselves, have got to have some negative
effect on your physic. Regardless, I do believe that the benefits of taking the vaccines far outweigh the dangers of the side effects and
the dreaded pestilence, itself. At least with the vaccines, you have a fighting chance of surviving. But that was then. I’m excited about
today and the future. The 12th man is back. Families can return to support their favorite teams in person. Fantasy football fans will still
have to worry about under-performance, injuries, penalties, turnovers, bad officiating, and so forth. But at least their starting lineups
won’t be affected week to week by this current day version of the plague.
