PNG Onshore Basins - Multiclient Interpretation
1. PNG Multi Client Study
A regional gravity and magnetic
interpretation project
over the West Papua New Guinea
petroleum basins
2. PNG Multi Client Study
The Project
North New
Guinea Basin
(Block 2)
Papuan Basin
(Block 1)
This contemporary project aims to model and map the crustal and
basinal architecture of the Western Papua New Guinea basins. The
primary scope of the project will be to outline the nature and structural
controls of the petroleum basins to produce a robust and consistent
regional tectonic framework.

Datasets
• Datasets to be used in the project include:
– Ground gravity.
– Satellite gravity (1 to 2 minute:- spherical
harmonic degree is 2160 for an approximate
resolution of 9km).
– Airborne magnetic (datasets range from the 60s
through to the 2000s).
– Available well and seismic data.

Datasets: Seismic and Wells
• Open file Data
– Available open file well and seismic data will be
used to provide constraints for the modelling.
• Proprietry Data
– Any proprietary data made available by sponsors
will only be used to constrain the modelling and
will not be detailed or included within the
deliverables

Regional Basement Structure
• Regional Structural Mapping and Basin Architecture
Maps
– This will be based on the integrated analysis of the gravity
magnetic and spectral data sets to interpret the basin-
forming and deforming structures and structural
geometries which are fundamental to the regional basin
architecture for the North New Guinea and Papuan basins.
ProjectOutcomes
18. PNG Multi Client Study
Basement Geometry
• Modelling of Basement geometry and Sediment
Distribution
– 2D gravity and magnetic modelling utilising available
onshore gravity station data Satellite gravity and airborne
magnetic data. Available well and seismic lines will be used
to help constrain depth to basement and basin structure.
– Focus on the morphology of Cretaceous and Tertiary
basins, basement highs and basement composition.
– Correlate and modify where nessessary existing regional
stratigraphy with basin geometry to provide a context for
understanding the distribution and deformation of source
and reservoir units and potential trap domains.
ProjectOutcomes
19. PNG Multi Client Study
Moho surface
• Inversion of satellite gravity data to produce a
regional Moho grid.
– The aim for modelling the Moho surface will be to examine
the link between the lower crust, Moho geometry, and
surface deformation.
– The architecture of the Moho and lower crust will provide
important insight to the Mesozoic rift geometry and
further means for understanding the evolution and
subsequent inversion of Papuan Basin.

Deliverable Products
• The results of this work will be presented as grids
and located geotiffs with vector data presented in
GIS formats and DXF files. These will be supplied as
GIS projects and as a Kingdom project. An
accompanying report will provide detailed discussion
of the results and the implications for basin
development and hydrocarbon prospectivity.

Project Structure
• Block 1 (Papuan Basin) interpretation,
modelling and reporting will be completed
first followed by Block 2 (North New Guinea
Basin).
• The regional Moho Surface modelling will
encompass both the Blocks and be done in
conjunction with the initial Block 1 work
program.

Project Benefits
• How will the client benefit
– enabled exploration companies to understand and
properly evaluate the potential of the basin.
– Access to high quality data for a fraction of the cost of
exclusive proprietary ownership
– Allows company to prospect on trend or regional basis
– Ability to “ramp up” knowledge base very quickly
using available “off the shelf” data
– Facilitates higher exploration and development
success rates

Participation
• Benefits for sponsorship ofthe West Papua New
Guinea petroleum basins project include:
– an exclusivity period with the data. The duration of
this exclusivity period will be negotiated with sponsors
to make sure their requirements with the data are
met.
– Sponsors of the project will be provided with ongoing,
regular updates, presentations and preliminary
products throughout the progression of the work
program. A final presentation of the results and
discussion will be presented to the sponsors.
