Greater Greenville Greeter was established to help newcomer and first time homebuyers transition to their
new home and community more easily by providing helpful community information and resources. What
began as personal visits to homes has evolved into shipments to accommodate everyone’s busy lifestyles
without interfering in their routines or busy first weeks. This special Newcomers Guide & Homeowners Manual
is our gift to you and was compiled from suggestions made by past newcomers and welcome recipients. After
all, when you buy an appliance or car, you get a manual - so shouldn’t you have one when you buy a house??
You will want to keep this where you can retrieve it at anytime, as it was designed to be your guide with
helpful information to protect your investment and your family. Be sure to visit our website for information on
new sponsors who may have special offers for GGG recipients, as well as our calendar of events to keep you
informed of local activities.
We wish you many years of happiness in your new home.

Your Creed
Connecting with others who share your beliefs is
essential to your sense of belonging. For some, it is a
priority, while others will appreciate resources for the
future. The Interfaith Forum was established to build
understanding, respect and cooperation among the
various religious denominations and faith groups in
our community, our region, our nation and our world.

IMMEDIATELY
‰‰ If you haven’t already - change your locks! Do you really know where all the
copies of keys are from the former owners or contractors??
‰‰ Make a record of all of your belongings - a Home Inventory. Keep this in a
fire-resistant safe, and update every 6 months.
‰‰ Alarm systems are not only great deterrents to prevent burglaries, but can
save your life when seconds count during a fire. Did you know that fire
victims die quietly from smoke inhalation in their sleep before the fire
reaches them?? Keep your family safe, and buy or activate the home alarm
system.
‰‰ Secure double hung windows with key locks.
‰‰ Secure sliding doors from being lifted out of their tracks.
‰‰ Never run appliances when you aren’t home. Dryers are responsible for
numerous fires, and washers are responsible for extensive water damage
when hoses let go or rupture. And remember to shut off water supply when
you go away for days or weeks at a time.
‰‰ Watch your water and electricity bills. These can indicate overloads from
leaks or appliances and systems that need repair.
MONTHLY
‰‰ Change HVAC filters - cheaper filters are fine if you change monthly
‰‰ Clean range hood filters - any degreaser and warm water will do
‰‰ Clean faucet aerators and showerheads to remove mineral deposits
‰‰ Inspect tub and sink drains to prevent clogs
‰‰ Test auto reverse on garage doors - use basket - should auto reverse within 2
seconds”
‰‰ Inspect fire extinguishers - accessibility and adequate pressure indicated on
gauge
QUARTERLY
‰‰ Test smoke/carbon dioxide detectors - hit “test” button. Replace batteries as
necessary
‰‰ Flush toilets and run water in unused faucets to prevent grimy build-up
(guest rooms, basements, etc)
‰‰ Palmetto Exterminators provides Quarterly Pest Control Service.  If you
haven’t arranged for service, now is the time to call
EVERY 6 MONTHS(daylight savings time changes)
‰‰ Spring & Fall clean - deep clean, including windows & appliance. Dust blinds
and vacuum curtains. Don’t let dirt, dust and grime build over the years.
Better yet - call Greco Cleaning Services
‰‰ Check for frayed cords and wires.
‰‰ Clean drains by adding 1/2 cup baking soda followed by 1/2 cup of white
vinegar - allow to sit for 10 minutes, then carefully flush with boiling water
‰‰ Clean garbage disposal with white vinegar ice cubes
‰‰ Replace batteries in smoke/carbon dioxide detectors - even if the batteries
work!!
‰‰ Inspect kitchen & bathroom cabinets, discarding outdated food, medicine &
cosmetics
‰‰ Inspect and clean refrigerator and freezer, discard outdated food
‰‰ Vacuum refrigerator coils - ensures efficiency and can save you $100+ each
year in electricity
‰‰ Call a storage facility to store your unused furniture.
‰‰ Update your Home Inventory.
You get a manual when you buy an appliance or car, so shouldn’t you get
one when you buy a house?? Maintaining the integrity of your home
and making improvements is essential to home ownership and requires
a little insight and good resources. Investing in your home saves time,
trouble and unnecessary expense in the future. The follow schedules of
maintenance, insights and consumer buying tips will help you to keep
things running smoothly.
On behalf of the Interfaith Forum, welcome to your
new home in Upstate South Carolina! One of the many
delightful facets of life here is the rich diversity of faith
traditions. All of the major religions of the world are
represented, which means that in addition to selecting
a personal place of worship, you will discover numerous
opportunities to learn about faiths with which you are not
already familiar.
The Interfaith Forum, a non-profit organization founded
in 1999, is dedicated to deepening understanding among
different religions and strengthening mutual respect. We
invite you to participate in our programs or contact us with
questions. Our website is Interfaithforum-sc.org.

Call 811 Before You Dig
Today, more and more of the utility companies that supply power, water, telephone, sewer, gas, and cable
are delivering those services underground. Because these lines are buried underground, digging can
quickly turn into a dangerous situation. Fortunately, you can find out where the facility operator owned
lines are buried with a call to South Carolina 811. When you contact our call center, we notify our member
facility operators of your planned excavation and they will locate their underground lines free of charge.
Safe digging is everyone’s responsibility. Notifying South Carolina 811 of your planned excavation is one
of the best ways to protect yourself and others from physical injury, avoid fines and prevent the interrup-
tion of utility services.

Seasonal Checklists For Your Yard
Little tips and interesting facts:
‰‰ Bluebirds will fly down downspouts looking for a home to nest in. This is fine if the downspout opens at the
bottom of the house - but they will get stuck if the downspout is diverted with an underground pipe. Be sure to
pick up downspout caps that allow rain in, but keeps birds out.
‰‰ Copperheads love the cool cover of English Ivy. Think twice before planting it!! If you already have it in your
yard, keep small pets away from it.
‰‰ If you find a small critter in your yard that you think needs your help, please read the “Pets and Wildlife” page
for educational information to determine if that critter would be better off left alone. Or visit http://www.
paws-sc.com/found-animal/ for more information or assistance.
‰‰ Rather than spray toxic chemicals so you can enjoy your food outdoors without uninvited guests like FLIES - use
herbs - either diluted oils or fresh plants hanging nearby. Visit http://home.howstuffworks.com/green-living/
herbs-deter-flies-naturally.htm
‰‰ Be sure to confirm any contractor who will be working on your property, inside or out, is licensed and insured.
This will save you headaches and huge financial risk.
This is not a complete list of maintenance tips, but enough to get you started on the right foot. For help with these or other outdoor concerns, contact a
local professional, but be sure to ask for references and do some comparison shopping.

MAKING SENSE OF INVESTING
Your Finances
Risk Management
You made a huge investment in your home, and want to
protect it and your family. No one ever intends to lose
their home or suffer a tragedy, but we know it happens. It
is important not to live beyond your means - many people
learned this the hard way during the great recession.
We don’t know what we don’t know, so the following
information and tips are provided to help you grow money
and have peace of mind - now and in the future.
What is Personal Risk Management?
• Life Insurance - to replace your earnings for you family if anything were
to happen. If one spouse does not work, they should also be insured to
cover the cost of replacing the services they provide to the family (think
housekeeping, childcare, etc). NO ONE should be without life insurance.
• Retirement Savings - most people find that they can’t afford to retire
when they reach that age. Protect your dreams by allocating a little from
each paycheck - saving a little now results in a HUGE return when you hit
retirement. If your employer does not provide that benefit, talk to a financial
advisor. GGG Sponsors include Barbara Sloan, Dan Egerdahl and Deborah
Abshire.
• Long-term Care - can you guarantee that you will never become severely
ill, disabled, or mentally ill? If you answer no - you need LTC insurance. It is
very affordable.
• Disability Insurance - Your ability to earn income is your primary asset.
Protect it with Disability insurance which is different from LTC. and again,
very reasonable. Call The Insurance Source for more information.
• Wills, Power of Attorney and DNR - If you own a home or have children, you
simply MUST have these in place. It can be done very affordably through
an attorney. Contact one today! Do not leave yourself or your loved ones
vulnerable for even another day.
How do I reduce my risks in my home and with my
belongings?
• Home Inventory - Make a record of everything you own and keep in a fire-
resistant safe and/or as an electronic file.
• Identification - Engrave or use permanent marker on your belongings to
identify them in case of theft.
• Flood insurance - torrential downpours or a neighbors’ excavating can result
in more water than your soil can handle - at which point - it enters your
home. This kind of water damage will not be covered by your homeowners
insurance unless you carry flood insurance. The lower your risk, the lower
the cost. Is it worth going without it?? NO.
• Gaps in insurance - you don’t know what you don’t know - and gaps in
insurance can leave you vulnerable. Before you renew your existing policy,
comparative shop with other agents and insurance providers to learn what
you don’t already know. Contact Karen Crowder for a complimentary review
of your current policy.
Would you go skydiving with the cheapest parachute
you can find?
Proper insurance isn’t always the cheapest option, but
the time to figure that out is before you have a claim.
We’d be happy to explain coverage options and find
insurance that works for you. So add one more item to
your checklist:

What is Daily Money Management?
• Bookkeeping Services are essential for those who have a hard time managing
money.  The service is great for you, a loved one or a small business.  Call Carrick

What is Debt Management?
• You must manage your money before debt controls you! Learn from those who

Home Inventory is Critical
Imagine for just a moment what you would do if you
lost everything you own to a burglary, or worse -
tornado or fire. Could you remember every item and
its value, and provide proof of ownership to submit
a claim? Probably not - the shock of disaster is
overwhelming and weakens your ability to do so. That
is why a Home Inventory is so critical, but only 44%
of homeowners do it. For your peace of mind, start
today - you can begin with the Allstate Digital Locker
and take pictures or videos of each room, closet and
cupboard in your home as proof of possession. For
greatest protection, store documentation, pictures or
video in a safety deposit box or on the cloud. We hope
you never have to use it, but isn’t this why you carry
insurance - just in case??

Many newcomers express their interest in the Swamp Rabbit
Bike Trail, the Saturday Farmers Market, as well as their
intentions to get healthier and enjoy a better quality of life
now that they are here in Greenville County. Now you need to
move from intentions to action. Here are some great health
tips and resources to help you enjoy many years of happiness
in your new home and community. Start by visiting LiveWell
at LivewellGreenville.org - a partnership that aims to make
Greenville County a healthier place to live, work and play.
Starting and maintaining an exercise program
•	It takes 6-8 weeks to develop a new habit. That explains why so many people
start an exercise program, but don’t continue. You must make that commitment
in your mind and on your calendar.
•	Join a walking or exercise group - you’ll enjoy the camaraderie and feel a sense
of accountability. You can find a walking group at http://www.meetup.com/
cities/us/sc/greenville/
•	You can exercise or become more active by doing things you enjoy. If you don’t
like repetition like weights, or indoors with groups, consider hiking, biking,
trailing running, swimming, or check out the Ramona Graham Fitness Trail in
Cleveland Park. Download the map at https://www.greenvillesc.gov/ParksRec/
trails/forms/FitnessMap.pdf
•	Always take a water bottle with you. You must stay hydrated.
•	Do not obstruct your hearing with headphones while biking, running, or even
walking in open places (as opposed to a treadmill). You must remain aware of
your surroundings for numerous safety reasons.
•	Visit the George I. Theisen YMCA in Travelers Rest, and the Eastside YMCA in
Taylors to see and experience all they have to offer with a guest pass.
•	You want to try the Swamp Rabbit Bike Trail but don’t have a bike. Greenville
B-cycle offers bike sharing memberships from 1 day to 1 week to 1 year. Visit
https://greenville.bcycle.com/default.aspx for more information.
•	If you suffer from allergies or asthma, consider running an Air and Surface
Purifier in your home to improve your air quality and reduce dust. You can try a
Vollara Space Certified model by calling Lee Hackney at 864-469-2257.
Dental Health
•	Start children early with good brushing/flossing habits, nutritious diet, and
regular dental check ups.
•	Get enough, but not too much fluoride to strengthen your enamel.
•	Brush and floss twice a day - everyday!
•	Change tooth brushes every 3 months.
•	Rinse or chew sugar-free gum after meals to remove food particles from teeth.
Chewing sugar-free gum after a meal increases the flow of saliva to neutralize
acid and wash bacteria away.
•	Be sure children, and you, wear a mouth guard when engaging in sports or
recreational activities that could result in blow to the mouth and teeth.
•	Avoid sugary foods, especially soda!!!! Choose healthy snacks.
•	Visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and check-up. If you don’t have
one, contact Dr. Rourk Freeman
Nutrition - local/organic produce
•	Visit the open-air TD Saturday Market on Main Street, Greenville from 8:30am-
12:30pm May to October. It’s more than just a market. They not only offer
an incredible variety of fresh, locally grown produce, but arts & crafts, music,
cooking demos, and “Booth for a Cause”. While Greenville is dog friendly, this is
a Pet-Free market. http://www.saturdaymarketlive.com/pages/
•	Visit Earth Market and learn more about choosing locally grown food at http://
www.slowfoodupstate.com/
•	Visit the Greenville State Farmers Market located at 1354 Rutherford Road for
food items and produce, annuals, herbs, plants,, shrubs. https://agriculture.
sc.gov/GreenvilleStateFarmersMarket
•	***TIP*** - The Upstate enjoys a great year-round climate and so many
resources for local and organic produce. Greenville has also been recognized for
the Best Tasting Water. So enjoy the beautiful outdoors, drink lots of water and
increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables to maintain better health.
Eye Care
•	Good eye care begins with a health diet. Green leafy vegetables, oily fish,
eggs, nuts and beans are not only good for your eyes, but reduce your risk of
developing type 2 Diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults.
•	Protect your vision by not smoking or being around smoke to reduce the risk of
cataracts, optic nerve damage, and macular degeneration.
•	Wear sunglasses to protect eyes from harmful UV rays.
•	Always wear eye protection when working with chemicals, air-borne materials,
working outdoors, or in industrial areas. Protective head gear should be worn
during sports.
•	Give your eyes regular breaks from the computer screen.
•	Stay hydrated, and blink often to reduce dry eyes.
•	Schedule eye exams regularly. Optometrists provide general eye care and can
treat common diseases of the eye. Ophthalmologists do that, and can perform
eye surgery.
•	If you don’t have an eye doctor, contact Southern Eye Associates.
Chiropractic Care
•	All spines are at risk of becoming out of alignment, which may not show any
symptoms for years, but will affect your posture. This causes nerve interference
and can affect all body functions, as well as lead to degeneration and arthritis.
•	Most people think of a Chiropractors for neck and back pain.
•	Expectant Moms find that chiropractic care can be very effective in treating the
various discomforts of pregnancy, and even postpartum depression.
•	Children’s asthma, ear infections, colic or IBS, bedwetting and ADHD can also
be treated effectively with chiropractic care.
•	If you suffer from sciatica, fibromyalgia, TMJ, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, allergies,
migraines, or experience pain when you move, you may be surprised at how
effective chiropractic care is.
•	A good Chiropractor asks questions, listens to the answers, provides education,
listens and responds to your concerns.
•	If you or someone in your family suffers from any of the above, contact Doyle
Chiropractic.

These accolades don’t mean that it’s easy to get a job. It just means it is probably
easier here than most other places. But getting a full-time job requires a full-time
commitment to your job search. Here are some great tips and resources to help
you along:
• Your contact information should have a local address and local phone number
for highest impact. Employers are not looking to pay relocation fees unless it
is a requirement to fill a high level or technical job.
• While you need a good template, each resume and cover letter should be
tailored to the job for which you are applying, speaking to the employer’s
needs as indicated in the posting and job description/requirements.
• Dress appropriately for interviews, even with recruiters and staffing agencies
- always one level above how you would dress if you got the job.
• Prepare for interviews by learning about the company on-line, practicing
answers to possible questions, and have a few good questions of your own.
• Throughout your job search process, remember that employers are looking for
the individual with the most recent and relevant experience, who can hit the
ground running and make or save them time or money, with the least learning
curve or disruption.

“I found a wild animal......What should I do???”
The first thing to do is make sure it really needs help. So let’s go through a quick
checklist.
Birds
• Fledglings are young birds that are fluffy and fat but cannot fly. These birds did
not fall out of their nest. They jumped! The parents fly from baby to baby and
feed them on the ground. Granted, it is a dangerous time in every bird’s life, but
all birds go through it. They do not need to be ‘rescued’. If you have dogs or cats
that may harm the baby, please try to keep them under control for a few days
until the babies have moved on.
• Younger birds can be replaced in the nest. (Note: birds will not ‘reject’ their baby
because you touched it.) Fallen nests may be replaced in the general vicinity
and the parents will find them. Be sure to wash your hands afterwards. A bird
that has a broken leg or obvious injury, or one that you’ve taken from the mouth
of your dog or cat DOES need help. Please take them to a licensed rehabilitator.
• Fawns The cute little fawn that you find curled up under the shrubs has not been
abandoned. It has been ‘parked’. Deer typically have two to three babies each
year starting in April. The newborn fawns are not able to outrun predators so
to keep them safe, mama deer parks them separately in places that she thinks
are safe. Unfortunately, what looked safe to her at 6am, might not look as safe
to you when you go to let the dogs out at 7am! If you will just walk the dog on a
leash and leave the baby where it is, you’ll find that it may be moved by the next
day. Do not go out to check on it frequently. If mom sees you, she will wait even
longer to come back. If the fawn is resting calmly, then the fawn does not need
help.
• If a fawn has injuries or has been hit by a car or has been chased for any reason
(whether injuries are visible or not), THAT fawn needs immediate care. Fawns
that are crying and walking around need help. Fawns are very fragile creatures
and they often need treatment with medications immediately if they are to
survive. Some conditions are NOT visible! Call ASAP!
Squirrels
• Baby squirrels do fall out of trees and it is often hard to put them back. Mother
squirrels can carry their babies back up into the nest on occasion. Put babies in
a soft basket and hang as close to the trunk as you can. Wait 4-6 hours for mom,
then call for help if not taken.
Opossums
• When mom gets killed by a car, there are frequently healthy babies in her pouch.
It is a kind and caring person who will stop and check the pouch of a dead
opossum and remove the babies. They frequently need to get on antibiotics
right away.
• Baby opossums do sometimes fall off of their mother’s back as she walks
around. These babies need to be rescued also.
Raccoons
• If mom has been hit by a car, the babies may stay along the edge of the road
with her body, not knowing what to do next. They need to be rescued.
• If babies are found in their nest in the attic, the best plan is to leave them there.
Put a light or a radio in the attic to let mom know that her ‘secret’ nest has been
found. As soon as she is able, she will relocate her babies without any other
intervention on your part.
• If you have cut down their tree, put the babies in a box at the base of the tree and
leave them overnight. In most cases, mom will relocate them before morning.
It is NOT true that mammals will not take their babies back if you touch them.
Handle them ONLY as much as you must and then wash your hands before
doing anything else. Wild animals can carry parasites and diseases that are
dangerous to humans. Using gloves when handling wildlife is always preferred.
• Until you get them turned in for care:
• DO keep them in a carrier or secure box in a dark, quiet place away from children
and pets.
• DO keep orphans warm with a heat source on HALF of their box. A warmed
water bottle will also work.
• DON’T feed anything until you talk to a rehabilitator. The wrong thing causes
complications that can lead to death!
• DON’T feed babies normal milk from the refrigerator and do NOT feed human
infant formula.
• DON’T handle them or show them off to friends or family- stress kills!
• Get them to a licensed rehabber quickly. Some treatments don’t work if too
much time has passed.
Why can’t I just raise it myself?
Licensed rehabilitators have been trained to handle various species of animals,
each with their special needs and quirks. White it may seem like fun, too often,
well meaning but inexperienced people unintentionally end up doing more harm
than good and harming the very animals they mean to help.
• It is not always apparent when the animal is in trouble. By the time symptoms
are visible to a novice, they may no longer be treatable.
• Rehabilitators know about the various parasites and diseases that each species
can carry and know how to safely handle the animals.
• Often, it is illegal to rehabilitate wild animals without a license. For example, it
is a federal offense to rehabilitate birds, such as songbirds, hawks, owls, ducks
and geese without the proper permits. Offenders can get hefty fines and even
jail time.
• Rehabilitators also know how to prepare the animals for release back into the
wild. An animal cannot be treated like a family pet and then be expected to
suddenly adjust when they are dropped into the woods one day.
• Finding a rehabilitator
• You are more than welcome to start by contacting us at Paws Animal Wildlife
Sanctuary, Inc. We are state and federally licensed to handle all wildlife and
have been rehabilitating wildlife for over 20 years.

Seasonal Checklists For Your Yard Little tips and interesting facts: ‰‰ Bluebirds will fly down downspouts looking for a home to nest in. This is fine if the downspout opens at the bottom of the house - but they will get stuck if the downspout is diverted with an underground pipe. Be sure to pick up downspout caps that allow rain in, but keeps birds out. ‰‰ Copperheads love the cool cover of English Ivy. Think twice before planting it!! If you already have it in your yard, keep small pets away from it. ‰‰ If you find a small critter in your yard that you think needs your help, please read the “Pets and Wildlife” page for educational information to determine if that critter would be better off left alone. Or visit http://www. paws-sc.com/found-animal/ for more information or assistance. ‰‰ Rather than spray toxic chemicals so you can enjoy your food outdoors without uninvited guests like FLIES - use herbs - either diluted oils or fresh plants hanging nearby. Visit http://home.howstuffworks.com/green-living/ herbs-deter-flies-naturally.htm ‰‰ Be sure to confirm any contractor who will be working on your property, inside or out, is licensed and insured. This will save you headaches and huge financial risk. This is not a complete list of maintenance tips, but enough to get you started on the right foot. For help with these or other outdoor concerns, contact a local professional, but be sure to ask for references and do some comparison shopping. Palmetto Exterminators, Inc. Member SIPC To learn more about why Edward Jones makes sense for you, call or visit today. www.edwardjones.com Member SIPC Edward Jones MAKING SENSE OF INVESTING Your Finances Risk Management You made a huge investment in your home, and want to protect it and your family. No one ever intends to lose their home or suffer a tragedy, but we know it happens. It is important not to live beyond your means - many people learned this the hard way during the great recession. We don’t know what we don’t know, so the following information and tips are provided to help you grow money and have peace of mind - now and in the future. What is Personal Risk Management? • Life Insurance - to replace your earnings for you family if anything were to happen. If one spouse does not work, they should also be insured to cover the cost of replacing the services they provide to the family (think housekeeping, childcare, etc). NO ONE should be without life insurance. • Retirement Savings - most people find that they can’t afford to retire when they reach that age. Protect your dreams by allocating a little from each paycheck - saving a little now results in a HUGE return when you hit retirement. If your employer does not provide that benefit, talk to a financial advisor. GGG Sponsors include Barbara Sloan, Dan Egerdahl and Deborah Abshire. • Long-term Care - can you guarantee that you will never become severely ill, disabled, or mentally ill? If you answer no - you need LTC insurance. It is very affordable. • Disability Insurance - Your ability to earn income is your primary asset. Protect it with Disability insurance which is different from LTC. and again, very reasonable. Call The Insurance Source for more information. • Wills, Power of Attorney and DNR - If you own a home or have children, you simply MUST have these in place. It can be done very affordably through an attorney. Contact one today! Do not leave yourself or your loved ones vulnerable for even another day. How do I reduce my risks in my home and with my belongings? • Home Inventory - Make a record of everything you own and keep in a fire- resistant safe and/or as an electronic file. • Identification - Engrave or use permanent marker on your belongings to identify them in case of theft. • Flood insurance - torrential downpours or a neighbors’ excavating can result in more water than your soil can handle - at which point - it enters your home. This kind of water damage will not be covered by your homeowners insurance unless you carry flood insurance. The lower your risk, the lower the cost. Is it worth going without it?? NO. • Gaps in insurance - you don’t know what you don’t know - and gaps in insurance can leave you vulnerable. Before you renew your existing policy, comparative shop with other agents and insurance providers to learn what you don’t already know. Contact Karen Crowder for a complimentary review of your current policy. Would you go skydiving with the cheapest parachute you can find? Proper insurance isn’t always the cheapest option, but the time to figure that out is before you have a claim. We’d be happy to explain coverage options and find insurance that works for you. So add one more item to your checklist: Call Karen Crowder’s office today! • 10. 1918 UpstateGreeter.com Greater Greenville Greeter Many newcomers express their interest in the Swamp Rabbit Bike Trail, the Saturday Farmers Market, as well as their intentions to get healthier and enjoy a better quality of life now that they are here in Greenville County. Now you need to move from intentions to action. Here are some great health tips and resources to help you enjoy many years of happiness in your new home and community. Start by visiting LiveWell at LivewellGreenville.org - a partnership that aims to make Greenville County a healthier place to live, work and play. Starting and maintaining an exercise program • It takes 6-8 weeks to develop a new habit. That explains why so many people start an exercise program, but don’t continue. You must make that commitment in your mind and on your calendar. • Join a walking or exercise group - you’ll enjoy the camaraderie and feel a sense of accountability. You can find a walking group at http://www.meetup.com/ cities/us/sc/greenville/ • You can exercise or become more active by doing things you enjoy. If you don’t like repetition like weights, or indoors with groups, consider hiking, biking, trailing running, swimming, or check out the Ramona Graham Fitness Trail in Cleveland Park. Download the map at https://www.greenvillesc.gov/ParksRec/ trails/forms/FitnessMap.pdf • Always take a water bottle with you. You must stay hydrated. • Do not obstruct your hearing with headphones while biking, running, or even walking in open places (as opposed to a treadmill). You must remain aware of your surroundings for numerous safety reasons. • Visit the George I. Theisen YMCA in Travelers Rest, and the Eastside YMCA in Taylors to see and experience all they have to offer with a guest pass. • You want to try the Swamp Rabbit Bike Trail but don’t have a bike. Greenville B-cycle offers bike sharing memberships from 1 day to 1 week to 1 year. Visit https://greenville.bcycle.com/default.aspx for more information. • If you suffer from allergies or asthma, consider running an Air and Surface Purifier in your home to improve your air quality and reduce dust. You can try a Vollara Space Certified model by calling Lee Hackney at 864-469-2257. Dental Health • Start children early with good brushing/flossing habits, nutritious diet, and regular dental check ups. • Get enough, but not too much fluoride to strengthen your enamel. • Brush and floss twice a day - everyday! • Change tooth brushes every 3 months. • Rinse or chew sugar-free gum after meals to remove food particles from teeth. Chewing sugar-free gum after a meal increases the flow of saliva to neutralize acid and wash bacteria away. • Be sure children, and you, wear a mouth guard when engaging in sports or recreational activities that could result in blow to the mouth and teeth. • Avoid sugary foods, especially soda!!!! Choose healthy snacks. • Visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and check-up. If you don’t have one, contact Dr. Rourk Freeman Nutrition - local/organic produce • Visit the open-air TD Saturday Market on Main Street, Greenville from 8:30am- 12:30pm May to October. It’s more than just a market. They not only offer an incredible variety of fresh, locally grown produce, but arts & crafts, music, cooking demos, and “Booth for a Cause”. While Greenville is dog friendly, this is a Pet-Free market. http://www.saturdaymarketlive.com/pages/ • Visit Earth Market and learn more about choosing locally grown food at http:// www.slowfoodupstate.com/ • Visit the Greenville State Farmers Market located at 1354 Rutherford Road for food items and produce, annuals, herbs, plants,, shrubs. https://agriculture. sc.gov/GreenvilleStateFarmersMarket • ***TIP*** - The Upstate enjoys a great year-round climate and so many resources for local and organic produce. Greenville has also been recognized for the Best Tasting Water. So enjoy the beautiful outdoors, drink lots of water and increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables to maintain better health. Eye Care • Good eye care begins with a health diet. Green leafy vegetables, oily fish, eggs, nuts and beans are not only good for your eyes, but reduce your risk of developing type 2 Diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults. • Protect your vision by not smoking or being around smoke to reduce the risk of cataracts, optic nerve damage, and macular degeneration. • Wear sunglasses to protect eyes from harmful UV rays. • Always wear eye protection when working with chemicals, air-borne materials, working outdoors, or in industrial areas. Protective head gear should be worn during sports. • Give your eyes regular breaks from the computer screen. • Stay hydrated, and blink often to reduce dry eyes. • Schedule eye exams regularly. Optometrists provide general eye care and can treat common diseases of the eye. Ophthalmologists do that, and can perform eye surgery. • If you don’t have an eye doctor, contact Southern Eye Associates. Chiropractic Care • All spines are at risk of becoming out of alignment, which may not show any symptoms for years, but will affect your posture. This causes nerve interference and can affect all body functions, as well as lead to degeneration and arthritis. • Most people think of a Chiropractors for neck and back pain. • Expectant Moms find that chiropractic care can be very effective in treating the various discomforts of pregnancy, and even postpartum depression. • Children’s asthma, ear infections, colic or IBS, bedwetting and ADHD can also be treated effectively with chiropractic care. • If you suffer from sciatica, fibromyalgia, TMJ, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, allergies, migraines, or experience pain when you move, you may be surprised at how effective chiropractic care is. • A good Chiropractor asks questions, listens to the answers, provides education, listens and responds to your concerns. • If you or someone in your family suffers from any of the above, contact Doyle Chiropractic. • 12. 2322 UpstateGreeter.com Greater Greenville Greeter These accolades don’t mean that it’s easy to get a job. It just means it is probably easier here than most other places. But getting a full-time job requires a full-time commitment to your job search. Here are some great tips and resources to help you along: • Your contact information should have a local address and local phone number for highest impact. Employers are not looking to pay relocation fees unless it is a requirement to fill a high level or technical job. • While you need a good template, each resume and cover letter should be tailored to the job for which you are applying, speaking to the employer’s needs as indicated in the posting and job description/requirements. • Dress appropriately for interviews, even with recruiters and staffing agencies - always one level above how you would dress if you got the job. • Prepare for interviews by learning about the company on-line, practicing answers to possible questions, and have a few good questions of your own. • Throughout your job search process, remember that employers are looking for the individual with the most recent and relevant experience, who can hit the ground running and make or save them time or money, with the least learning curve or disruption. • 13. 2524 UpstateGreeter.com Greater Greenville Greeter “I found a wild animal......What should I do???” The first thing to do is make sure it really needs help. So let’s go through a quick checklist. Birds • Fledglings are young birds that are fluffy and fat but cannot fly. These birds did not fall out of their nest. They jumped! The parents fly from baby to baby and feed them on the ground. Granted, it is a dangerous time in every bird’s life, but all birds go through it. They do not need to be ‘rescued’. If you have dogs or cats that may harm the baby, please try to keep them under control for a few days until the babies have moved on. • Younger birds can be replaced in the nest. (Note: birds will not ‘reject’ their baby because you touched it.) Fallen nests may be replaced in the general vicinity and the parents will find them. Be sure to wash your hands afterwards. A bird that has a broken leg or obvious injury, or one that you’ve taken from the mouth of your dog or cat DOES need help. Please take them to a licensed rehabilitator. • Fawns The cute little fawn that you find curled up under the shrubs has not been abandoned. It has been ‘parked’. Deer typically have two to three babies each year starting in April. The newborn fawns are not able to outrun predators so to keep them safe, mama deer parks them separately in places that she thinks are safe. Unfortunately, what looked safe to her at 6am, might not look as safe to you when you go to let the dogs out at 7am! If you will just walk the dog on a leash and leave the baby where it is, you’ll find that it may be moved by the next day. Do not go out to check on it frequently. If mom sees you, she will wait even longer to come back. If the fawn is resting calmly, then the fawn does not need help. • If a fawn has injuries or has been hit by a car or has been chased for any reason (whether injuries are visible or not), THAT fawn needs immediate care. Fawns that are crying and walking around need help. Fawns are very fragile creatures and they often need treatment with medications immediately if they are to survive. Some conditions are NOT visible! Call ASAP! Squirrels • Baby squirrels do fall out of trees and it is often hard to put them back. Mother squirrels can carry their babies back up into the nest on occasion. Put babies in a soft basket and hang as close to the trunk as you can. Wait 4-6 hours for mom, then call for help if not taken. Opossums • When mom gets killed by a car, there are frequently healthy babies in her pouch. It is a kind and caring person who will stop and check the pouch of a dead opossum and remove the babies. They frequently need to get on antibiotics right away. • Baby opossums do sometimes fall off of their mother’s back as she walks around. These babies need to be rescued also. Raccoons • If mom has been hit by a car, the babies may stay along the edge of the road with her body, not knowing what to do next. They need to be rescued. • If babies are found in their nest in the attic, the best plan is to leave them there. Put a light or a radio in the attic to let mom know that her ‘secret’ nest has been found. As soon as she is able, she will relocate her babies without any other intervention on your part. • If you have cut down their tree, put the babies in a box at the base of the tree and leave them overnight. In most cases, mom will relocate them before morning. It is NOT true that mammals will not take their babies back if you touch them. Handle them ONLY as much as you must and then wash your hands before doing anything else. Wild animals can carry parasites and diseases that are dangerous to humans. Using gloves when handling wildlife is always preferred. • Until you get them turned in for care: • DO keep them in a carrier or secure box in a dark, quiet place away from children and pets. • DO keep orphans warm with a heat source on HALF of their box. A warmed water bottle will also work. • DON’T feed anything until you talk to a rehabilitator. The wrong thing causes complications that can lead to death! • DON’T feed babies normal milk from the refrigerator and do NOT feed human infant formula. • DON’T handle them or show them off to friends or family- stress kills! • Get them to a licensed rehabber quickly. Some treatments don’t work if too much time has passed. Why can’t I just raise it myself? Licensed rehabilitators have been trained to handle various species of animals, each with their special needs and quirks. White it may seem like fun, too often, well meaning but inexperienced people unintentionally end up doing more harm than good and harming the very animals they mean to help. • It is not always apparent when the animal is in trouble. By the time symptoms are visible to a novice, they may no longer be treatable. • Rehabilitators know about the various parasites and diseases that each species can carry and know how to safely handle the animals. • Often, it is illegal to rehabilitate wild animals without a license. For example, it is a federal offense to rehabilitate birds, such as songbirds, hawks, owls, ducks and geese without the proper permits. Offenders can get hefty fines and even jail time. • Rehabilitators also know how to prepare the animals for release back into the wild. An animal cannot be treated like a family pet and then be expected to suddenly adjust when they are dropped into the woods one day. • Finding a rehabilitator • You are more than welcome to start by contacting us at Paws Animal Wildlife Sanctuary, Inc. We are state and federally licensed to handle all wildlife and have been rehabilitating wildlife for over 20 years. (864) 683-3190 main number (864) 684-0650 secondary number PAWS.SC@gmail.com To find rehabilitators (including those in other states), go to our website at PAWS-SC.com, and click the tab that says ‘FIND A REHABBER’ If possible, please give a donation to whomever you take the animal to in order to help them with their expenses. There is NO funding from any source for the work that we do. So donations are extremely important to wildlife rehabilitators.
