2. Introduction
• Brenda Roberts is an internal auditor with over a decade of experience. Throughout her career,
she has worked with public accounting firms, public and private companies and government
agencies. Brenda Roberts has also been involved with various professional organizations, such as
the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), which has recently released a Global Knowledge Brief on
social media auditing.
A social media audit shows management how well the company’s social media strategy aligns
with business goals, how its strategy reinforces a positive brand experience and provides
managers a ‘return on investment’ on the efforts and resources expended on social media.
The brief, titled “Auditing Social Media: Adding Value by Improving Governance,” focuses on the
role of an auditor when evaluating and implementing a social media strategy. The IIA notes that
many companies may lack a complete or robust social media strategy; some organizations do
not have the processes needed to successfully manage a social media platform.
This Global Knowledge Brief looks to give auditors the tools needed to conduct a social media
audit, with the report focusing on how to define and manage the framework of a social media
platform, assess a company’s capabilities on the platform, and much more.
The IIA is a global organization dedicated to the promotion of the profession of internal auditors.
