Jack Merridew was spoiled as a child. He lived in an affluent household, and was never lacking
anything he desired. When Jack spilled something he never had to clean it. He never had to get things
himself, so he most likely had a butler at his house. This is demonstrated when he does not expect to have
to help Ralph and Simon build shelters (p.50).
He lived on a property with a large amount of land where he could hunt, or do other outside
activities. Despite not being liked by many people, Jack was responsible for supplying the group’s main
source of food. He lived on a property where he could practice and become adept at hunting. Jack spent a
lot of time in the outdoors, specifically killing animals. In the novel when Jack became focused on killing
animals (p.51) it shows that he has done activities such as hunting in the past.
Jack did not have many friends growing up, because most people did not like his egotistical
personality. He did not get along with children who were hard-working. In Lord of the Flies he did not get
along with Ralph because Ralph did not like Jack’s work ethic.
Jack also got in many fights. If people disagreed with him he was very likely to start a fight. He
had a violent nature when people disagreed with him, because he was used to getting what he wanted.
Jack is very angry when he tries to kill Ralph (p.172). He also had his “Tribe” try to hunt down Ralph and
kill Ralph’s cohorts. Jack and his tribe did manage to kill Simon and Piggy, as well as capture others.
This occurred because of Jack’s aggressive personality.
His hopes and dreams are to someday live in a mansion with a lot of land where he can continue
his desire to hunt animals. He dreams of this, because it was the way he was raised as a child, hence his
hunting nature throughout the book.
Jack’s actions throughout the book mirror his spoiled upbringing. He did not need to work very
hard to get what he desired. He hunted all the time on thousands of acres, which his family owned.. He
also did not have very many friends throughout his life according to the novel.
