Mark 5:36
Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, "Don't be afraid; just believe."
My Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is based upon a few simple precepts. The first is that learning is an active process, and thus requires that the
student be actively engaged in it. In the case of the p.e. sciences, most learning comes through the student formulating questions,
through critical reading of technical literature, and through working out solutions to problems. The second precept is that the role of the
instructor is to direct and to inspire the student in the learning process. This requires a mastery of the subject so that the instructor can
make judgments as to the logical structure of the subject material, as well as which are the important concepts and what is the best way
of relating these. It also requires that the instructor have a deep enough understanding of the subject and the underlying background to
be able to offer insights as to the significance of the material being presented, and especially in the case of the sciences, that he
demonstrate a critical approach in discussing the material. It is very important to me that my students know that I respect them and that
I will listen to them carefully. I let my students know that they are able to ask difficult questions and that I will take their comments
seriously. I try to create an atmosphere in which students treat each other with respect and come to understand that they can learn as
much from each other as from me. I also try to be clear in my expectations so that my students are able to work to meet the goals of
the course. One of my greatest joys as a teacher is witnessing that moment when a student comes to the realization that he or she truly
understands a concept or an idea. In this moment they experience true excitement about what they are learning. But more than that, I
see teaching as a two-way street – I clarify the concepts, and my students give back to me their new understandings and interpretations
of what they have learned. In the end, it is what I learn from my students that is as rewarding as what they can learn from me.
