Gammon has achieved and maintained its role as a leader
of Hong Kong’s construction industry through dedication
and professionalism, but also through early adoption and
application of innovative technologies.
Staying on the cutting edge of technology is a constant
effort, and Gammon is always looking for new ways to
improve safety and streamline processes. This is why we are
presently testing exoskeleton suits and the robotic ZeroG
Arm, while also using virtual reality for safety training.
Our quest to push the technological envelope is no
secret, and it frequently results in public recognition.
The most recent example of this is our “Build-to-Order”
Full Modular MEP Plant Construction, was awarded the
Innovation and Creativity Grand Award at the 2016 Hong
Kong Awards for Industries. It was our first time to win the
prestigious honour. This innovation improves safety while
reducing on-site installation time by up to 20 percent and
man hours of the process by up to 30 percent.
Where is this all headed? Although nobody knows
what the future holds, one thing is certain, the line
between the worlds of construction and technology
will continue to blur, and there is much, much more
innovation to come. We look forward to leading the way.

In this issue of The Record, two prominent themes
emerge, both of which are critical to our health as a
company and as individuals.
Firstly, Heart for Innovation. Gammon has a strong
innovation culture by business nature as contractor’s
DNA to find solutions to overcome engineering and
construction problems. The business has established
comprehensive structure and system for promoting
innovations. We could not be more proud of people
who shone in the Innovation Competition, as well as The
Gammon Way Awards coined in 2016. Our Core Values
can only be realised with devoted people, who work
persistently to drive the company forward. We have also
deeply engaged with Innovate Jardines, a group platform
for seeding product and process innovations.
Secondly, Caring for Life. We encourage all Gammon
people to be mindful of their health, sit less and move
more. The Gammon Family Fun Day 2016 is a good
epitome of this theme, “Health Above All”. The biggest
rewards we have are the smiling faces of so many families
truly immersed in joy and love!
As we close the chapter on 2016, we look forward to
an energetic and nimble Year of the Rooster!

Can Do Cocktail
Reception
On 13 October 2016, Gammon held its
annual Cocktail Reception at The Rotunda
at Exchange Square in Central. With more
than 400 guests attending the party, a good
time was had by all, including our guests of
honour: Under Secretary for Development
Eric Ma and Legislative Council Member Dr
Lo Wai Kwok.
The theme of the reception was
“Gammon Can Do”, which focuses on being
efficient and enthusiastic, while exhibiting
the willingness to tackle problems and offer
solutions. It also includes determination to
seek opportunities and innovative ideas.
These are the attributes that enable Gammon
to excel and grow.
A short video presentation highlighted
this Gammon’s “Can Do” spirit, which is
exemplified by current and recent projects
including the building of a new skyline in
West Kowloon and a strategic road network
at Chek Lap Kok Airport, plus the use of
robotics and exoskeletons at work sites.
“Can Do” is also embodied by our work in
Singapore, such as the introduction of the
first rectangular tunnel boring machine there.
Gammon thanks all of its staff, friends and
guests that made this party a delightful one!

We proudly acknowledge and embrace the innovative concepts and new ways of thinking as applied by our
dedicated staff, who were nominated for the Innovator of the Month awards from June 2016 to November 2016.

Idea: HS885HD Outrigger
Description: The outrigger is a detachable part specially
designed for the HS885HD crawler crane to mount/dismount
trailers without crane support. Only by installing the
outriggers on the crawler cranes, the self jack-up system of
the outriggers can enable the crawler cranes to be lifted up so
that the trailer can be easily set under the crawler cranes.
Benefits: Loading crawler cranes onto trailers is easier, and
can be done with less reliance on other crates. On top of that,
outrigger installation is easy for workers too.

Cheng Chung To Alex (Assistant Safety Officer)
Idea: Air Duct Installation
Description: Air duct installation is an essential work for EM,
involving the assembly of a large amount of air duct sub-units
near the ceiling. Workers are confronted with the challenges
of working at height and a large amount of manual handling.
The innovative air duct assembly rack provides a movable
support to the air duct components so that the assembly can
be carried out at a lower height with better ergonomic posture,
eliminating the need for manual handling.
Benefits: Reduce manpower by 50%.

From Building Information Modelling (BIM) to
RFID tags and 3D printing, Gammon has long been
a pioneer in advancing new technology for the
construction industry. Today, Gammon is at the cusp
of a new era in construction with the advent of robotic
devices that give workers added strength and the
ability to perform their jobs safely, more productively
and without fatigue. Using this technology, we are
now able to extend our physical capabilities and break
through the limitations of the human body.

O
ne device currently being tested, the Exoskeleton Suit
imported from Japan, allows workers to lift heavy loads
comfortably over long periods of time. Powered by
a battery, the device weighs only about 6kg – about
the same as a fully loaded backpack. When a worker
is about to pick up a heavy object, the Exoskeleton Suit senses his
movements and goes into operation to provide back support. Strain
is reduced by as much as 15kg, lowering the risk of short or long-
term back injuries common among construction workers.
According to Innovation Manager, Andy Wong, Gammon will
acquire more of these units and others like them should the trials
prove successful.
Another device being evaluated, the ZeroG Arm, operates
solely on mechanical principles without the need for electrical
power. When clamped onto a mobile platform, the ZeroG Arm
enables workers to manoeuvre equipment such as heavy drills as if
these tools were weightless, with virtually no effort and complete
freedom of motion.
In addition to reducing fatigue, the ZeroG Arm improves
accuracy and allows tedious and repetitive tasks to be performed in
a fraction of the time normally required.
Andy Wong says that Gammon is also investigating similar
devices, including a next generation exoskeleton model from the
US. Based on existing robotics technology, it is expected to improve
productivity even more dramatically.

New technology, new
applications
Along with their widespread adoption
on the factory floor, robots are
quickly being taken up by the global
construction industry, with Gammon
leading the way in Hong Kong.
Already in use since 2015,
Gammon’s Curtain Wall Installation
Robot has been utilised on two projects,
and other applications are now being
explored for installing not just glass but
metal panels on building curtain walls.
During a trial at the Murray Building
Hotel Redevelopment project, the
installation robot reduced the number
of workers on site by 25%, while
increasing both safety and efficiency. To
date, Gammon is the only construction
company in Hong Kong making use of
robotics for erecting curtain walls.

under development in collaboration
with two European companies. It allows
the extremely cumbersome and tiring
job of drilling holes in ceilings to be
done automatically, under the control
of just one worker using an iPad. All the
worker has to do is enter the parameters
of the workspace into the iPad via a
BIM model, show the machine the first
drilling point and watch as the robot
does the rest. Compared with traditional
drilling methods, the robot saves about
70% of the time needed to do a job and
improves safety by eliminating the need
to work at height. Once this drilling
robot prototype has been fine-tuned
and put into production, it will be the
first machine of its kind in the world.

at Gammon Singapore, where a tiling

For all of these reasons, the
integration of robotics, virtual reality

clearly the way of the future. Making
this future a reality, however, will require
a substantial investment and, ideally,
a commitment by the Hong Kong
Government through initiatives such
as the establishment of a Construction

have done.
But whoever takes the lead,
Gammon will be there helping to
advance the adoption of robotics so
that construction in Hong Kong is safer,
more engaging and far more productive
for the benefit of workers, clients and
the industry as a whole.

Developed in cooperation with a Zurich
company, the machine is capable of
applying cement paste and tiles in
central floor areas and will eventually
be able to do floor edges, a notoriously
difficult job.
Gammon is also applying the
latest in virtual reality (VR) gaming
technology to make safety training
come alive for both engineers and
workers. After trainees put on their VR
goggles, they are able to walk around a
virtual construction site under different
sets of conditions – safe, dangerous
or fatal – and test their responses and
preparedness.
The next step is to use VR for
falsework simulations to train workers
and supervision staff to identify common
mistakes of a scaffold and avoid a
collapse. Unveiled at a Gammon BIM
Conference in November 2016, the VR
setup can be used with a laptop and
pair of goggles anywhere scaffolding is
required.
The way of the future
Despite the many benefits offered by
robotics, some observers worry that this
technology will take jobs away from
humans or lead to scenarios out of a
science fiction movie.
Yet the advantages far outweigh
these concerns. For one, in Hong
Kong and other areas of the developed
world there is a growing shortage of
workers as fewer people are entering
the industry. Robots, therefore, are
simply filling the gap left by a shrinking
workforce.
What’s more, those workers who
remain in the industry are becoming
older – in Hong Kong, the age of the
average construction worker today
is over 50 years. With their ability to
reduce strain and lighten heavy loads,
innovations such as the ZeroG Arm
and Exoskeleton Suit provide obvious
benefits for older workers.
As robotics technology continues to
develop, it will also open up new higher-
level specialties in construction, such as
programming and robot maintenance.
This could be a particularly attractive
prospect for younger staff, who are likely
to welcome the opportunity to learn
more about robotics technology, look for
innovative applications using robots and
broaden their experience by working
across different divisions of the company.

place at 8:00am three
times a week at the site
of Shatin to Central Link
Contract no.1111 (SCL
1111) Project North South Line Tunnel
and Chatham Road North Traffic Diversion
Section. Superintendent Li Ho Sing always
arrives 15 minutes earlier, as he intends
to set an example for his team on the
importance of being punctual at work. In
addition to assigning tasks, he also singles
out areas where special attention and
improvements are required, and extends
compliments for excellent team members.
All team members address him as “Brother
Sing” to show their respect, and are eager
to learn from this veteran who possesses
over 30 years of frontline experience in
the construction industry.
You have been working for
Gammon for over 30 years, and
have participated in a number of
Hong Kong’s major infrastructure
projects. You are definitely
the tunnel works expert. What
inspired you to return to the
frontline in 2013 after your
retirement in 2011?
I joined Gammon as a leveller when I
was 18 years old. Most of the projects
I participated in over these years were
A Role Model for
Young Talents
related to tunnel, drainage and ducting,
such as the chimney of the old Tsing Yi
Power Station, Towngas’ designated pier
at Tuen Mun, the apron expansion of
the old Kai Tak Airport, and the Strategic
Sewage Disposal Scheme in Kowloon.
I assumed the position of
Superintendent of the SCL1111
Project after receiving the invitation of
Construction Manager Alan Yan. He said
that while I took care of works at the
frontline, he would handle resources
support at the back. His encouragement
boosted my confidence, and I felt
honoured to be entrusted by the senior
management, so I agreed to take up
this challenging task.
How challenging is the SCL1111
Project?
Works at the North South Line
Tunnel and Chatham Road North
Traffic Diversion Section involve lots
of excavation, temporary works, an
underground storm water storage
system, bridges and traffic diversions.
They are the most difficult parts of
the SCL1111 Project and are on
extremely tight schedules. For example,
construction works are carried out less
than six metres from the operating
MTR rail. Extra care is required to avoid
disrupting MTR’s busy services. As there
are signal/power cables above existing
tracks, team members can only carry
out operations from 2:00am to 4:00am
when MTR services halt, therefore
careful planning and coordination
are a must, especially with regard to
working procedures and manpower
arrangements.
In addition, there are extensive
public utilities underground that
team members must protect, such
as drainage, electricity cables, optical
fibres and gas pipes. Above the ground,
they have to attend to their own safety
as well as the safety of the traffic on
Chatham Road North, a main traffic
artery in Kowloon.
Owing to the wholehearted co-
operation and teamwork of all members,
the project has run smoothly since its
commencement in January 2013. I am
particularly proud of the team’s work
on a temporary bridge which was built
to cope with traffic diversions. Besides
confronting its technicality, the team
succeeded in completing this difficult
task within a few weeks, as scheduled,
despite the fact that they only had
one to two hours of operating time
every night. Their hard work and
achievements were much appreciated
and have boosted the confidence of
clients and stakeholders in Gammon’s
competence. Team members were

also encouraged when they received
compliments from our valuable
customers.
You must have possessed some
exceptional qualities to be
honoured as “Brother Sing” by
a 60-member team comprising
young assistant engineers,
foremen, technical apprentices
and front line workers. How do you
interact with young talents and
transfer your knowledge to them?
Mutual trust and cooperation are vital
in every team-building process. I host
gatherings at least once a month to
liaise among our core members. I review
their works at every morning assembly,
extend compliments for jobs well
done, and discuss deficiencies when
special attention and improvements are
required.
I adhere to strict self-discipline as
their role model. I demonstrate and
explain my requirements for techniques,
quality and delivery time explicitly. I
am pleased to work with a group of
brilliant young talents. They are diligent,
proactive and cooperative. They
typically deliver assignments on time,
sometimes even well before deadline.
It is important to keep pace with an
ever-changing environment. In nurtur-
ing the younger generation nowadays,
encouragement and compliment is
equally important as patient demon-
stration and mentoring. Sometimes I
assign slightly difficult assignments to
them so that they can take the chance
to demonstrate their ability, and build
up confidence and job satisfaction in
confronting challenges ahead.
What is your opinion on the future
of the construction industry and
manpower training?
The industry possesses a bright future
in spite of challenges including intense
competition, increasing technical
difficulty, a labour shortage and
escalating costs.
With regard to human resources,
as the work force is gradually ageing,
there is an urgent need for young
talents to join the industry. First of all,
management should have the vision to
invest in manpower training and provide
promotion and career development
opportunities to retain capable talents.
Secondly, it is important to recruit
the right person for the right job.
Industrious, proactive and co-operative
workers are essential in building an
efficient project team. Leaders, however,
have the responsibility to check out
deficiencies at work and to encourage
complementary positions and
cohesiveness among team members.
Team spirit can create magnificent
synergy effects which can definitely
benefit the project as a whole.
There are several outstanding
members in the SCL1111 Project. Not
only do these young professionals possess
high educational qualifications and
technical knowledge, they are diligent,
responsive and good at planning. I
believe they will have a rosy future.
Please share with us your attitude
toward work.
Difficulties are inevitable but I believe
that solutions will always outnumber
challenges. I also believe that there
is no one perfect solution for a
challenge, and that there is always
room for improvement. Even though I
am now a superintendent, I embrace
a non-stop learning attitude. In this
constantly changing environment, the
younger generation is now my mentor
regarding the latest construction
knowledge and information
technology. Recently, I learned how
to use Chinese to operate computers.
The iPad presented by management
is another great encouragement. It
helps me enlarge images of the project
easily. Together with the WhatsApp
application and translation function,
it helps facilitate communication with
my colleagues.
Over the years, I have embraced
the virtue of practicality and diligence
inspired by the senior management
of Gammon. Now, I am adopting this
attitude to lead the front lines to pursue
excellence on the SCL1111 Project.

與核心的前線員工聚餐,加強彼此的聯繫;

Aerial lifting will be crucial for the

relatively near to sensitive residential
area, primary and secondary schools.
We liaised and maintained regular

Through an innovative and cutting-
edge approach, Gammon is not only
delivering performance and safety for
this highly difficult project it is doing
so in the most efficient and sustainable
manner possible. From the beginning,
Gammon has spared no efforts to
develop the most suitable strategy for
the project, using BIM technology, 3D
scanning and 3D printing.
30 | The Record • Issue 1/2017
In the project’s tendering stage,
Gammon demonstrated its advanced
grasp of BIM technology and its
experience in AA projects with
uninterrupted building use. Landing this
contract, which includes approximately
6,000 tonnes of steel and an extensive
safety catch fan around the two
buildings, was a result of professional
competence and experience, rather
than offering the lowest price tag.
Project leader Wong Chiu Lung is
heading a team that is putting project
safety front and centre. One example
of this safety-first approach is the use
of 700 tonnes of steel to construct
catch fan structures around the existing
buildings, above a live environment
in which pedestrians and vehicles are
constantly below. The details of the
structure arrangements were accepted
by the client to facilitate the change
from on-site welding to nuts and bolts
connections, with the end result of
reduced risk of fire or falling debris. An
added benefit to this method is reduced
erection time in around 40%.
The importance of performing
this challenging AA work with an
unwavering dedication to safety is
underscored by the surroundings,
which include residential properties,
primary schools, office towers and
a hotel. On top of that, minimising
any inconvenience caused is a major
concern. To this end, Gammon designed
a detailed logistics plan which has been
implemented on the busy streets below.
We also designed a special lifting frame
in which a protective wire system has
been installed to protect the curtain
wall in order to minimise the frequency
of lifting operations.
In addition to our concern for the
safety of those down below, we are
also striving to ensure worker safety
and comfort. Further safety innovations
include a full-deck working platform that
covers the entire erection area, providing
a safer working environment. Cordless
equipment and dustless drill bits with
vacuums are also part of this safety-
focussed project. The project also features
regular health checks, special drinks
promotions, light duty clothing storage
cabinets and cooling towels for workers.
The Hung Hom Harbourfront
extension project is more than just
another major contract for Gammon,
it is an opportunity to showcase our
innovative approach to ensuring safety
and convenience for all, even when
facing extremely challenging projects.

Staying on the cutting edge of technology is a constant effort, and Gammon is always looking for new ways to improve safety and streamline processes. This is why we are presently testing exoskeleton suits and the robotic ZeroG Arm, while also using virtual reality for safety training. Our quest to push the technological envelope is no secret, and it frequently results in public recognition. The most recent example of this is our “Build-to-Order” Full Modular MEP Plant Construction, was awarded the Innovation and Creativity Grand Award at the 2016 Hong Kong Awards for Industries. It was our first time to win the prestigious honour. This innovation improves safety while reducing on-site installation time by up to 20 percent and man hours of the process by up to 30 percent. Where is this all headed? Although nobody knows what the future holds, one thing is certain, the line between the worlds of construction and technology will continue to blur, and there is much, much more innovation to come. Firstly, Heart for Innovation. Gammon has a strong innovation culture by business nature as contractor’s DNA to find solutions to overcome engineering and construction problems. The business has established comprehensive structure and system for promoting innovations. We could not be more proud of people who shone in the Innovation Competition, as well as The Gammon Way Awards coined in 2016. Our Core Values can only be realised with devoted people, who work persistently to drive the company forward. We have also deeply engaged with Innovate Jardines, a group platform for seeding product and process innovations. Secondly, Caring for Life. We encourage all Gammon people to be mindful of their health, sit less and move more. The Gammon Family Fun Day 2016 is a good epitome of this theme, “Health Above All”. The biggest rewards we have are the smiling faces of so many families truly immersed in joy and love! Today, Gammon is at the cusp of a new era in construction with the advent of robotic devices that give workers added strength and the ability to perform their jobs safely, more productively and without fatigue. Using this technology, we are now able to extend our physical capabilities and break through the limitations of the human body. FOCUS STORY O ne device currently being tested, the Exoskeleton Suit imported from Japan, allows workers to lift heavy loads comfortably over long periods of time. Powered by a battery, the device weighs only about 6kg – about the same as a fully loaded backpack. When a worker is about to pick up a heavy object, the Exoskeleton Suit senses his movements and goes into operation to provide back support. Strain is reduced by as much as 15kg, lowering the risk of short or long- term back injuries common among construction workers. According to Innovation Manager, Andy Wong, Gammon will acquire more of these units and others like them should the trials prove successful. Another device being evaluated, the ZeroG Arm, operates solely on mechanical principles without the need for electrical power. When clamped onto a mobile platform, the ZeroG Arm enables workers to manoeuvre equipment such as heavy drills as if these tools were weightless, with virtually no effort and complete freedom of motion. In addition to reducing fatigue, the ZeroG Arm improves accuracy and allows tedious and repetitive tasks to be performed in a fraction of the time normally required. Andy Wong says that Gammon is also investigating similar devices, including a next generation exoskeleton model from the US. Based on existing robotics technology, it is expected to improve productivity even more dramatically. The Record • Issue 1/2017 | 13

During a trial at the Murray Building Hotel Redevelopment project, the installation robot reduced the number of workers on site by 25%, while increasing both safety and efficiency. • 16. For all of these reasons, the integration of robotics, virtual reality and other automated technologies is clearly the way of the future. Making this future a reality, however, will require a substantial investment and, ideally, a commitment by the Hong Kong Government through initiatives such as the establishment of a Construction Innovation Centre, as other countries have done. But whoever takes the lead, Gammon will be there helping to advance the adoption of robotics so that construction in Hong Kong is safer, more engaging and far more productive for the benefit of workers, clients and the industry as a whole. Developed in cooperation with a Zurich company, the machine is capable of applying cement paste and tiles in central floor areas and will eventually be able to do floor edges, a notoriously difficult job. Gammon is also applying the latest in virtual reality (VR) gaming technology to make safety training come alive for both engineers and workers. After trainees put on their VR goggles, they are able to walk around a virtual construction site under different sets of conditions – safe, dangerous or fatal – and test their responses and preparedness. The next step is to use VR for falsework simulations to train workers and supervision staff to identify common mistakes of a scaffold and avoid a collapse. Unveiled at a Gammon BIM Conference in November 2016, the VR setup can be used with a laptop and pair of goggles anywhere scaffolding is required. The way of the future Despite the many benefits offered by robotics, some observers worry that this technology will take jobs away from humans or lead to scenarios out of a science fiction movie. Yet the advantages far outweigh these concerns. For one, in Hong Kong and other areas of the developed world there is a growing shortage of workers as fewer people are entering the industry. Robots, therefore, are simply filling the gap left by a shrinking workforce. What’s more, those workers who remain in the industry are becoming older – in Hong Kong, the age of the average construction worker today is over 50 years. With their ability to reduce strain and lighten heavy loads, innovations such as the ZeroG Arm and Exoskeleton Suit provide obvious benefits for older workers. As robotics technology continues to develop, it will also open up new higher- level specialties in construction, such as programming and robot maintenance. • 25. M orning assemblies take place at 8:00am three times a week at the site of Shatin to Central Link Contract no.1111 (SCL 1111) Project North South Line Tunnel and Chatham Road North Traffic Diversion Section. Superintendent Li Ho Sing always arrives 15 minutes earlier, as he intends to set an example for his team on the importance of being punctual at work. In addition to assigning tasks, he also singles out areas where special attention and improvements are required, and extends compliments for excellent team members. All team members address him as “Brother Sing” to show their respect, and are eager to learn from this veteran who possesses over 30 years of frontline experience in the construction industry. You have been working for Gammon for over 30 years, and have participated in a number of Hong Kong’s major infrastructure projects. You are definitely the tunnel works expert. What inspired you to return to the frontline in 2013 after your retirement in 2011? I joined Gammon as a leveller when I was 18 years old. Most of the projects I participated in over these years were A Role Model for Young Talents 以身作則悉心培育後進 related to tunnel, drainage and ducting, such as the chimney of the old Tsing Yi Power Station, Towngas’ designated pier at Tuen Mun, the apron expansion of the old Kai Tak Airport, and the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme in Kowloon. I assumed the position of Superintendent of the SCL1111 Project after receiving the invitation of Construction Manager Alan Yan. He said that while I took care of works at the frontline, he would handle resources support at the back. His encouragement boosted my confidence, and I felt honoured to be entrusted by the senior management, so I agreed to take up this challenging task. How challenging is the SCL1111 Project? Works at the North South Line Tunnel and Chatham Road North Traffic Diversion Section involve lots of excavation, temporary works, an underground storm water storage system, bridges and traffic diversions. They are the most difficult parts of the SCL1111 Project and are on extremely tight schedules. For example, construction works are carried out less than six metres from the operating MTR rail. Extra care is required to avoid disrupting MTR’s busy services. As there are signal/power cables above existing tracks, team members can only carry out operations from 2:00am to 4:00am when MTR services halt, therefore careful planning and coordination are a must, especially with regard to working procedures and manpower arrangements. In addition, there are extensive public utilities underground that team members must protect, such as drainage, electricity cables, optical fibres and gas pipes. Above the ground, they have to attend to their own safety as well as the safety of the traffic on Chatham Road North, a main traffic artery in Kowloon. Owing to the wholehearted co- operation and teamwork of all members, the project has run smoothly since its commencement in January 2013. I am particularly proud of the team’s work on a temporary bridge which was built to cope with traffic diversions. Besides confronting its technicality, the team succeeded in completing this difficult task within a few weeks, as scheduled, despite the fact that they only had one to two hours of operating time every night. Their hard work and achievements were much appreciated and have boosted the confidence of clients and stakeholders in Gammon’s competence. • 26. also encouraged when they received compliments from our valuable customers. You must have possessed some exceptional qualities to be honoured as “Brother Sing” by a 60-member team comprising young assistant engineers, foremen, technical apprentices and front line workers. How do you interact with young talents and transfer your knowledge to them? Mutual trust and cooperation are vital in every team-building process. I host gatherings at least once a month to liaise among our core members. I review their works at every morning assembly, extend compliments for jobs well done, and discuss deficiencies when special attention and improvements are required. I adhere to strict self-discipline as their role model. I demonstrate and explain my requirements for techniques, quality and delivery time explicitly. I am pleased to work with a group of brilliant young talents. They are diligent, proactive and cooperative. They typically deliver assignments on time, sometimes even well before deadline. It is important to keep pace with an ever-changing environment. In nurtur- ing the younger generation nowadays, encouragement and compliment is equally important as patient demon- stration and mentoring. Sometimes I assign slightly difficult assignments to them so that they can take the chance to demonstrate their ability, and build up confidence and job satisfaction in confronting challenges ahead. What is your opinion on the future of the construction industry and manpower training? The industry possesses a bright future in spite of challenges including intense competition, increasing technical difficulty, a labour shortage and escalating costs. With regard to human resources, as the work force is gradually ageing, there is an urgent need for young talents to join the industry. First of all, management should have the vision to invest in manpower training and provide promotion and career development opportunities to retain capable talents. Secondly, it is important to recruit the right person for the right job. Industrious, proactive and co-operative workers are essential in building an efficient project team. Leaders, however, have the responsibility to check out deficiencies at work and to encourage complementary positions and cohesiveness among team members. Team spirit can create magnificent synergy effects which can definitely benefit the project as a whole. There are several outstanding members in the SCL1111 Project. Not only do these young professionals possess high educational qualifications and technical knowledge, they are diligent, responsive and good at planning. I believe they will have a rosy future. Please share with us your attitude toward work. Difficulties are inevitable but I believe that solutions will always outnumber challenges. I also believe that there is no one perfect solution for a challenge, and that there is always room for improvement. Even though I am now a superintendent, I embrace a non-stop learning attitude. In this constantly changing environment, the younger generation is now my mentor regarding the latest construction knowledge and information technology. Recently, I learned how to use Chinese to operate computers. The iPad presented by management is another great encouragement. It helps me enlarge images of the project easily. Together with the WhatsApp application and translation function, it helps facilitate communication with my colleagues. Over the years, I have embraced the virtue of practicality and diligence inspired by the senior management of Gammon. Now, I am adopting this attitude to lead the front lines to pursue excellence on the SCL1111 Project. There are several outstanding members in the SCL1111 Project. This complex project will serve to showcase the Gammon group’s wide-ranging core competencies while working with all stakeholders to create a vibrant new business district. 1 New Commercial Building Contract in Kwun Tong CBD 28 | The Record • Issue 1/2017
  • 29. The scope of the project itself involves the drilling of more than 100 vertical and inclined drillholes in various locations in Mui Tsz Lam and Nui Po Shan, including mountainous terrain that is difficult to access. The works also include two horizontal directional coring borehole as long as 1km and three horizontal drillholes. In addition, the project will involve advanced geotechnical field tests such as horizontal televiewer survey and sonic testing that have not previously been attempted in Hong Kong. Long term ground water monitoring works will also be a part of these works. Rather than deploying a technician with a dipmeter – a time-consuming and unsafe option – we will use an Automatic Groundwater Monitoring Device (AGMD) and Grouted-in-place Vibrating Wire Piezometer (GVWP), which are sensors that can continuously measure the Ground Investigation WorksforRelocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works 搬遷沙田污水處理廠地質勘探工程 water levels in the boreholes. Aerial lifting will be crucial for the moving of equipment and materials for the plant. The aerial lifting routes are relatively near to sensitive residential area, primary and secondary schools. We liaised and maintained regular communications with the local residents to ensure our works will not affect them. As the boreholes, interconnected by complicated access paths, are scattered over the natural terrain, there is a risk of staff getting lost. We have implemented the use of Android mobile app called Geo Tracker, with the assistance of Google Earth. Geo Tracker can record the access paths and display these in Google Earth map and share with the entire team to ensure nobody loses their way, enhancing the project’s safety and efficiency. 1 G ammon contributes its capabilities to the landmark Ground Investigation project – the relocation of the existing Sha Tin sewage treatment works into the caverns at Mui Tsz Lam in Ma On Shan. Upon the completion of the new treatment plant, its predecessor will be demolished, which will make its prime location available for redevelopment into mixed residential and leisure use. The ground investigation for the Mui Tsz Lam project is valued at HK$163 million, making it the largest GI contract ever awarded in Hong Kong. The project is also run under NEC3 Contract Option B, one of the first for Gammon. It is also representative of a growing trend in civil engineering projects in Hong Kong as NEC3 encourages mutual trust and fairness between client, consultant and contractor. • 30. Building on a Reputation for Innovation and Safety The repurposing of Kai Tak International Airport unleashed new vertical possibilities across Kowloon, with the most obvious impact being the Tsim Sha Tsui skyline. Other areas in Kowloon have begun moving up in the world as well. And with most areas already built up, technically challenging Alteration Addition (AA) projects are often the only option. T he Hung Hom Harbourfront extension project is one of the largest-scale AA projects, both in terms of complexity and the amount of steel tonnage involved. The project will add an extra five floors of office space to Harbourfront One (OT1), while also extending Harbourfront Two (OT2) upward with the addition of 14 hotel floors. A new linkbridge will also connect OT2 to the Kowloon Harbourfront Hotel on the 20/F and 21/F, which provides a convenient access to occupants in upper floors. Through an innovative and cutting- edge approach, Gammon is not only delivering performance and safety for this highly difficult project it is doing so in the most efficient and sustainable manner possible. From the beginning, Gammon has spared no efforts to develop the most suitable strategy for the project, using BIM technology, 3D scanning and 3D printing. 30 | The Record • Issue 1/2017
  • 31. In the project’s tendering stage, Gammon demonstrated its advanced grasp of BIM technology and its experience in AA projects with uninterrupted building use. Landing this contract, which includes approximately 6,000 tonnes of steel and an extensive safety catch fan around the two buildings, was a result of professional competence and experience, rather than offering the lowest price tag. Project leader Wong Chiu Lung is heading a team that is putting project safety front and centre. One example of this safety-first approach is the use of 700 tonnes of steel to construct catch fan structures around the existing buildings, above a live environment in which pedestrians and vehicles are constantly below. The details of the structure arrangements were accepted by the client to facilitate the change from on-site welding to nuts and bolts connections, with the end result of reduced risk of fire or falling debris. An added benefit to this method is reduced erection time in around 40%. The importance of performing this challenging AA work with an unwavering dedication to safety is underscored by the surroundings, which include residential properties, primary schools, office towers and a hotel. On top of that, minimising any inconvenience caused is a major concern. To this end, Gammon designed a detailed logistics plan which has been implemented on the busy streets below. We also designed a special lifting frame in which a protective wire system has been installed to protect the curtain wall in order to minimise the frequency of lifting operations. In addition to our concern for the safety of those down below, we are also striving to ensure worker safety and comfort. Further safety innovations include a full-deck working platform that covers the entire erection area, providing a safer working environment. Cordless equipment and dustless drill bits with vacuums are also part of this safety- focussed project. The project also features regular health checks, special drinks promotions, light duty clothing storage cabinets and cooling towels for workers. The Hung Hom Harbourfront extension project is more than just another major contract for Gammon, it is an opportunity to showcase our innovative approach to ensuring safety and convenience for all, even when facing extremely challenging projects. 1 The Record • Issue 1/2017 | 31
