Us?

“The frozen world has
thawed and some of us are
waiting for it to re-freeze.
The thing is… we need to
learn to live in the slush.”

humanity had never made a phone
call and 20% of humanity had regular
access to high-speed
communications.
Today cell service is available over
90% of the globe, 77% have cells

24. 2014 Social Media Trends
• Becoming more mobile.
• Using more video.
• The rise of social paid advertising.
• Google+ will become a major factor
in social media.
• Quality content will be even more
important.
24 • More specialized.

Social networking may be creating
new kinds of community, but
wasn’t the church the original social
network?

...for the next two decades, the
primary missional challenge of the
church will be to incarnate the gospel
in a Google world.

all times, and if necessary use

can say about anyone?
Let’s not miss our moment.

32. Jesus is the same yesterday,
today, and forever.

.. To do this he needs to become
“fresh every morning”.
Jesus is fresh-baked bread and fresh
living water.
33. Final questions…
If so, why can’t we learn from other
people’s journeys?
33
Is wisdom less something we inherit than
something we must discover for ourselves?
Is there nothing that an spare us from the
pain of having to learn everything from
scratch?

We are going to work with #2 more in our breakout sessions. Each social media serves a slightly different audience with a slightly different audience, so the answer to #2 is complex. We will touch some of the uses, but more importantly, I hope to convey why we should care.
Wow! As Christians we are relational. Love one another. As United Methodists…we are connectional… As United Methodist Women
community of women whose purpose is:To know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ.
To develop a creative supportive fellowship. To expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
How have we been doing it? Marketplace, phone, church, front porch, home visits (sundays with my family) letters,
We’re going to watch a short video about social media. Don’t try to take notes. I will give you a link to the video to watch another time. Vaumw.org
But do try to latch onto a few facts. Try to retain something that catches you by surprise.
Look for who is wearing a watch. Gutenburgers.
But ask raise your hand if you recognized any of those icons flying across.
Recognized most?
Use any?
Use most?
Now I have an idea of who in the room is a gutenbugrer and who is a googler.
You can’t tell by age. I wasn’t’ paying attention to how many of each. I was looking at your wrist.
A quick and easy question is… who is wearing a watch.
Why wouldn’t a googler wear a watch?
We need to address the elephant in the room. We are gutenbergers living in a googler world. That’s why we are here. We need to know what is going on. The googlers already know.
Don’t worry about the icons, I will tell you all later and post on SiGod.org

Wow! We have been living with things as Gutenbergers so long, that when things change we quickly want to get “back to the good old days”
But that isn’t going to happen. The Rev. Mark Brown says…
That’s hard!
We have heard the horror stories… stolen identities, hacked emails, online porn, young girls being mislead by older adults to meet them and so on. So it seems safer to duck our heads like we are in a bomb shelter and hope it just goes away.
It is not going away. The world is forever changed.
Just yesterday Katy, who is presenting this morning, sent me an email with a link to a blog about fb. Did you hear that? Now if Katy had met me before she may have text or tweeted me, but she only had my email.. So I got an email with a blog link about fb.
Wow! How can that be? It’s not the drink, the gun, the anything. It’s humans. We blame the gov’t the schools, the church, anyone. But the truth is..God created us to help his kingdom come. If there is something wrong in the country…in the world… we “the church” the UMW need to make a difference. Are we willing to get out of our comfort zone and learn to live in the slush?
Can you imagine doing ministry the last 500 years and getting away with : Sorry I don’t do books?
My family ties…cousins on fb… first hear about graduations…engagements…even deaths
Plan family reunions
Interactive mean someone’s participation has the ability to shape the content of the
experience itself. Googlers test: am I learning something? Am I contributing something. If the answer to either is no, they leave.
For people who were illiterate, he conveyed the story to village obsessed with consumerist components of the holidays. Like St. Francis, you tell word-proof googlers stories about Jesus. You tell the old, old story. You don’t hand them a book, you give them an image and a story.
Da Vinci is quoted as saying that image and sound were the two perfect media. One for responding to the visible world, the other for responding to the invisible world. What you you think he meant? How might that perspective help us understand worship in Googler Culture?
So if you want to advance the kingdom and reach googlers… you will need to think of yourself as a missionary.
