Essay on Fear: Why Are We So Afraid?
"Being frightened is an experience you can't buy." We are a society that adores fear. We thrive off of
it; creating horror movies, shows like "Fear Factor", and the media in general are only a few
examples. At the same time there are people who are afraid to leave their house and are possibly
restricted to a single room. So what is fear? What is the purpose of being afraid? Why is it that
some people will run and scream when they see a snake while others collect and breed them for
their love of these majestic reptiles?
Fear is a feeling we have all dealt with at one time or another. It is something that we first
experience as children, and are conditioned to respond to in many different ways. In a controversial
experiment in...show more content...
Fear can also refer to general anxiety, as in Arachnophobia "fear of spiders" or Claustrophobia
"fear of closed in areas." These fears occur not automatically from a present or looming danger,
but instead a perceived threat, which to some can be just as scary. As said in a German proverb,
"Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is." For most people fear is a horrible and sickening feeling,
which it can sometimes be debilitating.
Fear is what shows us how to be careful, because self–protection is primitive. Therefore, it is safe to
suggest that we may be afraid to travel into an unlit cemetery for fear of being hurt by something
unknown. What could this unknown factor be? A ghost? Perhaps, but these fears are unreasonable.
Although this fear of ghosts and other things was established when we were young, the fear never
goes away. For we fear being physically hurt in any manner. Fear is a natural thing; it is indeed what
keeps us safe and secure. Fear is not a logical thought, but rather an irrational emotion.
When a fear is not validated by the presence of actual danger or a threat, or by a realistic cause, and
when it is also associated with a continuing evading of the circumstances, which lead to it, it is
called a phobia. Phobias occur in several forms. A phobia is a recurring, impractical, paralyzing fear
of a specific

Fear is a feeling induced by experience, perceived danger, or watching a frightening traumatic
accident. The fear responses arise from the perception of danger and ultimately a change in
behaviour, such as fleeing, or hiding or from perceived traumatic events. Every person has fears and
different fears may be different adaptations that have been useful in our evolutionary past. I have
fears too, and sometime, I feel embarrassed to intersperse my fear with others. My fear is
Lepidopterophobia, which is the word for fear of butterflies. Many times I have been letting others
know about my fear and they always thought it was very funny because butterflies are very small
and beautiful. However, I have reason to fear it. My fear has happen since

Definition Essay On Fear
Fear. The number one emotion that runs most of our lives. No matter how many times we try to
avoid it, it just seems to keep coming back. Kate Winslet is one of my favorite actresses and she
definitely knows what it's like to feel fear. As she has stated many times, some of the toughest roles
she's played in films began with the feeling of fear. She would read a script and think to herself,
"Wow, I'm scared to take this role. I don't know if I can do this." That thought, however, is exactly
what led her to do it and as is turns out, the roles she feared the most turned out to be her best and
even earned her many high profile awards, including the ultimate Academy Award.
Kate said this entry's quote when she was fearfully climbing a mountain on the adventure reality
television show, Running Wild with Bear Grylls. These words of wisdom talk about how it's a
good thing when a person feels fear if it involves going after something he or she really wants. It
means that person is facing that fear and when a fear is faced, it's being challenged. Fear will not
go away permanently until we keep challenging it and getting past it. Although it may seem like it
goes away when you decide to not take a risk, it's only temporary. It's still locked in your core
waiting to come out again the second you encounter another risk that you really want to take. If
we're not feeling fearful, we're not doing something that is worth the risk....show more content...
That fear stems from the natural fight or flight reaction our body has to protect us from serious
harm. The fear I'm talking about is the fear that we learned as children. It's the fear we learned
from society and the situations we had to go through. It's the fear that brainwashes our minds and
tells us we aren't worth that risk, that we will fail. This is an unnatural fear and whether we know it
or not, it rules our lives in many

Fear. Such a strong emotion that many of us feel everyday. Without fear the world would be a
disaster but with it can make someones life a disaster. There are many people in today's society
that let fear over rule them. These people let the fear over rule their whole life, making them not
able to go outside because they are absolutely terrified by what is out that door. Then, there are
people that are fearless, that rush into a burning house because they literally are not scared. One
could say that most of the population is about right between those two lines. Fear can sneak up on
one from out of no where and make you lock up. There is literally a fear for everything so one
should not be distraught if something odd should intrigue fear on them. For example, I am scared
of spiders. I have literally always been scared...show more content...
Fear is often related to our social peers. Fear can hit one like no other when there are all the social
pressures on one, making them collapse. The social pressure can be unbearable and strike fear
into almost anyone. For example, all your friends are trying marijuana. They keep repeatedly
telling you to try it and it'll be cool if you do. You don't know what there smoking, but then again
you don't want to lose them as friends. This can strike someone down with fear because they have
no clue what to do. For another example there is always the opinion of others. Especially for a
high school student. Other children can be downright ruthless, making fun of what you wear,
look like, or even how you smell. These aspects can make one even scared to go to school. These
kids strike you down with more and more opinions every day causing you to be more scared of
school everyday. This is just like the physical fear, you have to stand up for yourself, because if
they see they can do it once they're not going to just stop. You have to stand up and say i don't care

Fear of public speaking Essay
Your chest is tight and you feel like you're on fire. Your chest is tight ant you're burning up. The
flash cards in your hands are crumpled from you squeezing them obsessively. You look up and see
dozens of eyes staring at you, waiting expectantly. Taking a deep breath, you stumble through the
speech. When it's finally over, you practically run back to your seat, cheeks flaming bright red. You
slump down, already dreading the next time you'll have to deal with your upmost fear: public
speaking. For as long as I can remember, public speaking has always been one of my greatest
weaknesses. Whether it's a simple in–class presentation or a speech in front of an auditorium filled
with people, I can barely get my words out from the anxiety and...show more content...
I used the search engine Google with the search term "public speaking fear" and it brought up a
great deal of interesting websites pertaining to public speaking. The first one I decided to peruse
was 5 Tips to Reduce the Fear of Public Speaking on Psychology Today's website. I learned that
public speaking is the number one fear in America, while the fear of death is second in line. This
means that we're more afraid of speaking in public than we are of dying. I also learned five tips on
how to reduce public speaking nervousness.
The first one was 'Don't Expect Perfection from Yourself.' No one is perfect but when it comes
time to speak in public, some of us pick at every little flaw we think we make. We blow up our
imperfections yet ignore the good things. Honestly, though, even the greatest and most experience
public speakers can make a lot of mistakes. The difference is, when they do, they're able to
gracefully recover and keep going as if nothing happened. That's one of the keys to success: keep
going gracefully. Most of the time, the audience won't notice most of your mistakes unless you make
them obvious by stopping your speech, breaking down and admitting your mistakes. You just have to
carry through with poise and let yourself not be perfect.
The second tip was 'Avoid Equating Public Speaking to Your Self
–Worth.' Basically, if you're a
successful professional who's worked hard for where they are in life right now, you

Fear In Edgar Allen Poe's Short Stories
How We Face Our Fears
One of the most unpleasant instincts as a human is fear. It can help us be more aware of our
surroundings or prevent us from harming ourselves. Fear is also able to induce us to obsessed
with what we worry about the most, causing isolation from reality. The remoteness leads into not
being able to enjoy life, or cause major repercussions. In Poe's stories the main characters have to
face what they fear the most. The characters either choose to face their fear, or run away from it.
Poe uses similes, irony, and imagery to illustrate whether the character's obsessions with fear will
lead them to death or prosperity.
Edgar Allen Poe uses symbolism to emphasize the way that the character's obsessions with fear lead

The narrator has begun to become paranoid because of the ВЁvulture eyeВЁ. He becomes so
paranoid, that he wants to discard it. The eye, to the narrator, symbolizes judgement. Because he
is so focused on the eye, he does not realize that he will just be getting rid of the eye, he will also
be killing the old man too. When the narrator does kill the old man, he then realizes that he has
made an immense mistake, and guilt possesses him. The narrator's obsession with the eye had
blinded him from seeing what retribution he would receive when he tries, or gets rid of it. Similar

The Fear Of Fear : Fear And Fear
Fear is an unpleasant feeling which is caused by the awareness of danger according to me. It is
something that everyone has to manage no matter what; fear will be fear. Our lives are
significantly formed by fears. We cannot escape from the experience of fear and pain. Everyone
has their own fears but no matter how people look at it, they all overcome their apprehensions.
People have different types of phobias. They are afraid of water, spiders, ghosts, etc. Even I am
scared about such things. You know how there's always that one kid who's always terrified of
something? Always jumping at the next unsuspecting sound? He is even afraid of his own
shadow? Well, I was one of those kids. When I was 10 I had anightmare. I saw that something was

Who, or what, could have done something like this? I could feel the distinct sensation that I was
being watched. There was this person who did not look into my eyes but kept repeating "Red
eyes... Red eyes..." And then, there it was. Those two bright red eyes that I had seen just that
very evening. I sat in my car; the whole way home I found myself constantly checking my
rearview mirror. No matter how fast I drove, the feeling of being watched never quite went away.
When I got home, Shadow was not there to greet me at the door as she always had. The house was
silent and dark. I may have felt relief if it were not for the dreadful feeling in my heart. Then, right
before my eyes, the shadow of a lady appeared. It did not look like the dark figure I had seen before.
In fact, the shadow was my own. It was silhouetted against a bright red light.
Oh God! This was the worst nightmare I've ever had and vividly recalled. The worst part was the
terror with the red eyes I always saw in that one nightmare. I used to often wake up crying and
drenched in sweat for few months. I always got the same feelings of dread and fear whenever I was
alone. The thought of someone following me, who had red eyes was constantly knocking my head
and I just was not able to concentrate on some important things. I was always conscious of what my
surroundings were or what they would become. I would examine the environment literally every
fifteen minutes, just couldn't stop thinking about it.

My Fear- Personal Narrative Essay
My Fear– Personal Narrative Every child, teenager and adult has experienced anxiety, fear or
worry at some time in their lives. Everyone has their own phobias. Some are just temporary
whereas others just linger, haunting them forever. Life allows us each of us to experience
challenges in our own way. But when these challenges become almost impossible to complete,
they become long term problems. When faced with fear, one looks for the easiest route out, but
in my case, there were no signposts. There is one part of my life that I vividly recall. I don't really
know when or how it started. Maybe I'd had it all my life or maybe it developed at a certain age.
Perhaps, that will remain an unsolved...show more content...
I didn't know why this was happening and felt that I had no control over my thoughts or fears. By
this stage, I would have persistent nightmares of my house burning down where everyone in the
building would escape, with the exception of me. I remember how I felt after being awoken by
the fear of death. It was a feeling of confusion and I didn't know why this was happening. My
phobia totally disabled me and at the time I found it difficult to relax. I live alone with my mum
and she was unaware of what I was secretly going through. At the time, I never really opened my
eyes to the fact that I had a problem. I told myself that it was just a phase and that I was fine but
deep down I think I always knew that this was untrue. Another habit of mine was counting
syllables of words. Whenever I would see a shop sign I would count the syllables of the words
written and would ensure that the number of syllables did not exceed sixteen (my favourite
number). One evening, a friend of mine had visited my home for dinner and I could do nothing
but worry about the food overcooking and causing a fire. It would not leave my mind and was all
that I could think of. That is when I noticed that my actions were odd. I almost immediately logged
on to the internet and searched for fire related obsessions.

Fear And Fear : The Fear Of Fear
Some people are afraid of heights; they simply are mortified by them. They're scared to death of
even thinking about being in high places, seeing tall buildings or structures and the very worst,
actually being at a high elevation. In any of these scenarios people with alto–phobia (the fear of
heights) can often get dizzy, experience panic attacks, anxiety and a whole other host of things that
would endanger them in certain situations. Luckily, I am not one those people, because if I was,
either I wouldn't have a cool story to tell or I'd be dead right now.
This little escapade happened when I was around 7 to 8 years old, I'm not entirely sure the age
but it was definitely around that period. During that time in the area in which I lived there were
these kids who lived really close to me whom I used to muck around with during the summer or
whenever. This day in particular was one of those days. My childhood friend Jesiah; who was
about two years older than me, wanted to go on one of those adventures we used to go on all the
time, so he grabbed another kid (whose name I have forgotten) to come along with us. What we
used to do was run through other people's backyards, but it's way more interesting than it sounds, I
promise. My house was on a hill, so that the neighbors backyards behind us was almost entirely
above my house. Many of their yards had steep climbs, were sometimes very wild, and just fun to
run around in and jump from yard to yard. This time, however, we didn't just go into the usual
yards we'd go in. For some reason we decided to go one block up and come down to a certain yard
that was two houses down, and towered over our house to the point that we could visibly see the
roof of the two story house to go around a garage to get to another yard next to it.
Now, this would seem tame, if it weren't for the fact that to get around the garage in the first place
you had to step on a ledge that was a little less than a foot wide, back against the wall, over a drop
that would lower gradually. Mind you this in on the right side, we still hadn't gotten around to the
back yet! When we actually reached the back the other kid chickened out and went back to meet us
on the other side (which was wise of him, he

Essay on The Emotion of Fear
Fear Do all living things fear something? Those with minds surely have many and various fears,
but even the simplest organisms must have fear, for fear is such a powerful feeling. Fear is all
around us and is felt in every corner of the earth. Fear is the emotion or feeling that a living
creature gets when its physical or mental life is interrupted by a change that causes the creature
concern. We humans especially, fear many different things: death, disease, old age, commitment,
noises in the night, pain, responsibility, work, being too fat or too thin, or any number of other
things. Some of our fears are reasonable and rationale, like the fear for our safety so we lock our
doors at night, never walk alone on dark streets, and...show more content...
Change, the process of all growth and life, is greeted generally with a feeling of fear. Fears seem
to sneak up on us, drenching us in sweat sending our heart rate rocketing, leaving us quaking and
shivering. Some fears we see coming and our body and mind prepare to fight or flee. We
understand those kinds of fears and can use rational thinking , stress reduction, and plan our
actions to combat those fears. Various things help reduce our sense of helplessness, which is a
common emotion experienced with fear. One of the things we fear the most is the loss of or lack
of control. Even if we really don't have control, we like to think we do, and when we lose that
sense of control, fear rushes in. For example, an alcoholic will say " I can quit any time; I'm in
control." The fear comes when he realizes for the first time that he is an alcoholic and that he is not
in control. We all fear uncertainty and the unknown. We arm ourselves against it with candles in the
dark, or faith against the uncertainty of death. Then, when we think we've conquered our fear, it
comes invading our minds again, let in by a smell or a taste, a sound or a thought Fear is always
there, just waiting right under the surface, to awaken those memories which frighten us the most.
Fear can come anytime in the silence of the night or in the bright glare of the day. Fear cannot be
conquered. We

The Fears Of Fear : Fear Of Darkness
I've always had fears in the back of my mind but as I've got older I have come realize that they
were childish and silly thoughts that stopped me from achieving big things. The first fear I had was
Nycophobia or in other words the fear of darkness. I could distinctly remember when I could see
shadows on the wall which in my mind were monsters, ghosts.
The fear of darkness is a common phobia to have but to me it was more than just a fear it was an
integral part of my life. Most young children can go to bed and fall asleep without any hassle,
however in my case going to bed was like being sent to death. There I would lay on my bed in a
dark room when I would see a shadow zoom past the wall causing me to scream like a little girl, it
was embarrassing. Then again, this was only one of the encounters I had with 'spirit world' but
there was one encounter and this was the worst of all, it was that scary it could frighten a grown
man. And it all started at my little old grans house.
My granny's house lay on a narrow street next to the graveyard which really spooked me out,
however I did have my granny to look after me, right? No, instead of sleeping in my grans nice cosy
bedroom that night I had to sleep downstairs on my own in my uncle's old room. This room was the
complete opposite of my grans it was a cold and smelly old room which was almost non liveable.
Despite this, I did have a huge double bed all to myself. I arrived and I was dreading it, it is not

Reflection About Fear
Failure is a lesson everyone will learn from, but the fear of falling into the same traps that others
around me have can make or break me. Temptations such as drugs, not graduating or not being
financially stable is a fear of mine. Not everyone thinks of these things, they just go day by day
and live unaware of their circumstance. But when you acknowledge the fact that there are
problems you're one step closer to finding a resolution. This isn't a problem everyone faces, it's just
a thought that might have lingered one time or another throughout life. With all honesty I believe
the environment in which a person lives can have an effect on their chances to succeed in life.
How determined you are to beat the odds, to avoid drugs, focusing on school, and live within
your means might determine if you face the problem of what many calls "the struggle". Drugs
can become very addictive and while seeing the affect it has of some of the people I love made
me fear becoming them because I face most of the problems they face the idea of wanting to be
numb the thought of needing something or someone more than what I provide is a scary feeling.
I imagine what it's like the musty odor of unwashed skin, reeking of weed smoke with a mixture
of burnt plastic. Seeing the coming and going of half a man all skin and bones feeling the pain of
everyone in the room. You become consumed by the next fix I seen it happen to the best of people.
Not only can drugs become a trap but not

My Greatest Fear In Life
My biggest fear in life is failure. I always try to prove myself to others and make sure that I can
get the task done on the first try. In life, there will always be mistakes made and that is where I
am still learning. The fear of upsetting someone because of my own optimal performance can be a
positive objective to overcome. Once I overcome that fear I have more choices to do what I want
instead of what others want me to do.
The fear of not living up to someone's expectation is a fear that most teenagers suffer especially in
high school. High school you are expected to keep certain standards. Your senior year you have to
perform your senior exit, make time to do good on the ACT and SAT, and search for a suitable
college. Parents will apply stress on their kids and not realize that it can affect their kids in a bad
way, but in the end helps in a good way. As a high school senior, I have experienced this situation
first hand.
I am afraid of not making my parents happy with my accomplishments, which means that I don't
want to disappoint them with any mishaps. I've come to the realization that I can't be perfect for
other people. It's about how much work I put in just to prove myself to them despite the outcome. In
life, you go through trial and errors and must learn from your mistakes and grow from them.
This fear has limited my ability to do what I think is right. As a person who likes to keep people
happy, that feeling of not being able to come through with a completed

Fear : A Personal Response To Fear
Ever since the day you were born, fear has always been an emotion that always crosses a human
being's mind. No matter if it's from being afraid of heights or even the loud noises that go on
around us. Fear is our response to when we are feeling threatened by the fact that we might be in
danger. However, the way others react and respond to fear differs. A very common response is
being paralyzed by fear, where your mind and life can be paralyzed emotionally and mentally by a
situation that very much impacts your inner self. A big part that plays in this, is yourself. Whether
you let it consume you or you can fight it and continue on with your life. Many factors can
determine and cause the state you're falling into. It can be triggered by anything in your daily life,
from it being a physical illness, an emotional trauma/experience, a loss of a family member, to even
the abuse drugs and alcohol can all set off your mental state.
When you let an emotion run through your mind day by day, it will start to consume you mentally.
Anxiety plays a major role when it comes to fear, they go hand in hand together. It can easily affect
your life to the point where you're constantly living in fear or not even being able to live for
yourself. Anyone that has had anxiety have also had paralysis without even knowing it. Many
people don't think much when it comes to these type of things. However, when you're afraid that's
when fear is at its highest point, because there's a thought of danger in

Essay on Phobias
Phobias
Fear is a normal and an important human reaction to something dangerous, it keeps one out of
danger, because fear is disliked and one tries ones best to avoid the object or situation of fear. It
causes physical changes known as fight–or–flight reaction, which causes blood pressure to increase
and the heart rate to speed up to pump blood to the large muscles used to run away, to balance this
the human body has sweat glands which produce perspiration to cool the body.
Usually young people experience more fear than adults do (Metcalf).
When one has a fear of something, one normally does not spend much time thinking about it, and it
only affects one when one is forced to confront it. Just about everyone is afraid of something,...show

However, phobia can even cause people to risk their health. For example, the fear of dentists can
leave people suffering from it willing to risk the health of their teeth in order to avoid having to go
through an exam or procedure ( MacKay). When one knows about an upcoming confrontation, it
can be the reason why one can not sleep or finds it hard to focus on important tasks. Due the change
in daily routine, this unrealistic fear can interfere with the ability to socialize, work, or go about
everyday life, brought on by and object, event or situation. But even animals have anxieties and
phobias just as every human being (www.phobia–help.de). A phobia is an irrational fear, one knows
that the object or situation, one is scared off, can not hurt one, but one is still afraid. A reason for
this is that the human mind can not distinguish what is real and imaginary. When one has
uncontrollable anxiety attacks, he loses rational judgement, leading to complicated problems.
However, anyone can develop a phobia, men and women, teens and young adults, and elderly lady
or a one–year–old boy (MacKay). Thereby it is not completely clear, what the causes for phobia
are. Phobia is often caused by something scary that happened earlier in somebody's life, but not
every one develop phobias after special experiences. An explanation for this could be that for some
people certain parts of the brain and specific neural pathways are associated with phobias. It is

There is an important event that happens in every person's life. That important event may be a

My important event in life was the day I conquered my fear of heights. Everyone has some type of

Fear Essay: Fear And The Fear Of Fear
Fear is something every single human being has at some point in their life. When you are in
dangerous, threatening, or scary situations, fear is what your body will feel. It is the ability to
identify danger and make a choice to either confront that fear or flee from the situation like for
example, if you were to break a vase, you would hide from your parents. That choice is completely
up to the victim, and depends on the person. Although fear is handled differently by every person, it
is a common emotion that everyone feels. Some seek out to overcome their fears, and seek the

and slowly no matter what the outcome is. Our imagination is usually a bit too clear for our minds,
and our worst–case scenarios can go above and beyond with the fears that we have for things. In
most cases, the thing we fear may not turn out as bad as we can imagine. When we want to give
up on something in any kind of situation, we lack the panorama to see how things end up. Maybe
the most important lesson is that we do not need to remove any kind of fear in our life. We can
welcome fear with our life and cope with it. Next time you are fearful about anything don't make
it a big thing and fight through it. Fears can be pretty rational because there are some choices and
risks you will have to take because you never know if it's going to be the right choice just like in the
video "What fear can teach us". The men had to make a pretty difficult decision because there was a
very low chance of survival. These are the kind of people that afraid of everything basically. They
might over think the worst possible thing and just lose their mind about it because fear is something
we will all face for the rest of our lives. There isn't a way to avoid being scared in life unless you
face it. Each choice we make is followed by our

Descriptive Essay About Fear
Fear consumes me every moment of every day and with everything I do in my life. I am scared of
failing, speaking, socializing, cooking, swimming, riding a bike, driving, death, and being alone. My
mom says I have an active imagination but everyone else seems to think that I have a mental
problem.
This year is my last year of high school and then I am on my own in a big, bad world full of terrible
things. Something inside of me takes over. I've been to many psychiatric doctors but they do
absolutely nothing to help me. They are all liars. They swear that they won't say anything to anyone
and then they go into the other room and tell them everything. Untrustworthy people are another one
of my fears.
I am going to college soon and my...show more content...

a big klank and jolt as the lock turns slowly in the door. Any second he will come in here andkill
me. I must escape. Immediately my eyes are drawn to the window as I can hardly breathe. I'll jump
through the window and warn the neighbors that they could be the next victims. I must act quickly,
time is not on my side.
As the door creaks, I manage to pry the window open and jump out. Everything is happening in
slow motion as I run for my life while trying to remember to breathe. I'm sure he will shoot me.
The wood fence is weak and broken in many places. I don't know if I can make it over without
hurting myself or falling. Suddenly I see a lawn chair and put it to the fence. I jump over and
hold my breath. I feel the release of pressure and then a burst. Instantly my body becomes cold.
My lungs are all sealed up. I can't remember how to get air out of my mouth. I am getting dizzy
with fear. This must be what death feels like. A strong chilling wave rushed through me. Something
is grabbing me and pulling me out. I feel like a wet rag doll as I'm being dragged to a spot on the
pavement.
All of the sudden I hear a familiar voice. Finally, I feel safe. I'm still trying to

Definition Essay On Fear
The only person that can control on how you fear something whether it is in a dream or in your
everyday life, is yourself. People think that they can't control the fears that come in there life due
to not being able to gather yourself and wake up if you are in a dream. There are many ways that
fear can come upon your dreams, it could mean that you are trying to get over it, solve it, or facing
it head on. When you go to bed your mind wanders about fears that you had in the past or fears in
the future. Your fears are then put into images of which then create anxiety after you wake up.
There are five common topics that can arise in a dream that have a specific meaning. Dreaming of
losing a tooth or teeth, can occur due to that in the past days you have "bitten off more than you can
chew" in a situation. You also may be making...show more content...
Being unprepared for an exam could mean that you are experiencing stress in your life at the
moment which could have made for a long day. Being chased is another dream people can
experience if you are feeling threatened or hurt by a certain thing if they get too close. Your
response to this would be that you need to escape the situation in your life. Another would be that
something mechanical is not functioning this represents that something in your life is not working
or that your life may be a mess and you have no control over it. An infestation of bugs or animals
could mean that this is an actual fear and has happened in the past. Could also mean that you are
being bugged or irritated by something in you life. In dreams there are connections between animals
and feelings, for instance butterflies mean longevity, creativity, joy, and spirituality. Grasshoppers
mean freedom and independence. One more example would be ladybugs which could mean beauty
and good luck. Wild animals symbol life

An Essay On Fear

  • 1. Essay on Fear: Why Are We So Afraid? "Being frightened is an experience you can't buy." We are a society that adores fear. We thrive off of it; creating horror movies, shows like "Fear Factor", and the media in general are only a few examples. At the same time there are people who are afraid to leave their house and are possibly restricted to a single room. So what is fear? What is the purpose of being afraid? Why is it that some people will run and scream when they see a snake while others collect and breed them for their love of these majestic reptiles? Fear is a feeling we have all dealt with at one time or another. It is something that we first experience as children, and are conditioned to respond to in many different ways. In a controversial experiment in...show more content... Fear can also refer to general anxiety, as in Arachnophobia "fear of spiders" or Claustrophobia "fear of closed in areas." These fears occur not automatically from a present or looming danger, but instead a perceived threat, which to some can be just as scary. As said in a German proverb, "Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is." For most people fear is a horrible and sickening feeling, which it can sometimes be debilitating. Fear is what shows us how to be careful, because self–protection is primitive. Therefore, it is safe to suggest that we may be afraid to travel into an unlit cemetery for fear of being hurt by something unknown. What could this unknown factor be? A ghost? Perhaps, but these fears are unreasonable. Although this fear of ghosts and other things was established when we were young, the fear never goes away. For we fear being physically hurt in any manner. Fear is a natural thing; it is indeed what keeps us safe and secure. Fear is not a logical thought, but rather an irrational emotion. When a fear is not validated by the presence of actual danger or a threat, or by a realistic cause, and when it is also associated with a continuing evading of the circumstances, which lead to it, it is called a phobia. Phobias occur in several forms. A phobia is a recurring, impractical, paralyzing fear of a specific Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Paper On Fear Fear is a feeling induced by experience, perceived danger, or watching a frightening traumatic accident. The fear responses arise from the perception of danger and ultimately a change in behaviour, such as fleeing, or hiding or from perceived traumatic events. Every person has fears and different fears may be different adaptations that have been useful in our evolutionary past. I have fears too, and sometime, I feel embarrassed to intersperse my fear with others. My fear is Lepidopterophobia, which is the word for fear of butterflies. Many times I have been letting others know about my fear and they always thought it was very funny because butterflies are very small and beautiful. However, I have reason to fear it. • 3. Definition Essay On Fear Fear. The number one emotion that runs most of our lives. No matter how many times we try to avoid it, it just seems to keep coming back. Kate Winslet is one of my favorite actresses and she definitely knows what it's like to feel fear. As she has stated many times, some of the toughest roles she's played in films began with the feeling of fear. She would read a script and think to herself, "Wow, I'm scared to take this role. I don't know if I can do this." That thought, however, is exactly what led her to do it and as is turns out, the roles she feared the most turned out to be her best and even earned her many high profile awards, including the ultimate Academy Award. Kate said this entry's quote when she was fearfully climbing a mountain on the adventure reality television show, Running Wild with Bear Grylls. These words of wisdom talk about how it's a good thing when a person feels fear if it involves going after something he or she really wants. It means that person is facing that fear and when a fear is faced, it's being challenged. Fear will not go away permanently until we keep challenging it and getting past it. Although it may seem like it goes away when you decide to not take a risk, it's only temporary. It's still locked in your core waiting to come out again the second you encounter another risk that you really want to take. If we're not feeling fearful, we're not doing something that is worth the risk....show more content... That fear stems from the natural fight or flight reaction our body has to protect us from serious harm. The fear I'm talking about is the fear that we learned as children. It's the fear we learned from society and the situations we had to go through. It's the fear that brainwashes our minds and tells us we aren't worth that risk, that we will fail. This is an unnatural fear and whether we know it or not, it rules our lives in many Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Research Paper On Fear Fear. Such a strong emotion that many of us feel everyday. Without fear the world would be a disaster but with it can make someones life a disaster. There are many people in today's society that let fear over rule them. These people let the fear over rule their whole life, making them not able to go outside because they are absolutely terrified by what is out that door. Then, there are people that are fearless, that rush into a burning house because they literally are not scared. One could say that most of the population is about right between those two lines. Fear can sneak up on one from out of no where and make you lock up. There is literally a fear for everything so one should not be distraught if something odd should intrigue fear on them. For example, I am scared of spiders. I have literally always been scared...show more content... Fear is often related to our social peers. Fear can hit one like no other when there are all the social pressures on one, making them collapse. The social pressure can be unbearable and strike fear into almost anyone. For example, all your friends are trying marijuana. They keep repeatedly telling you to try it and it'll be cool if you do. You don't know what there smoking, but then again you don't want to lose them as friends. This can strike someone down with fear because they have no clue what to do. For another example there is always the opinion of others. Especially for a high school student. Other children can be downright ruthless, making fun of what you wear, look like, or even how you smell. These aspects can make one even scared to go to school. These kids strike you down with more and more opinions every day causing you to be more scared of school everyday. This is just like the physical fear, you have to stand up for yourself, because if they see they can do it once they're not going to just stop. You have to stand up and say i don't care what anyone thinks and be Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The flash cards in your hands are crumpled from you squeezing them obsessively. You look up and see dozens of eyes staring at you, waiting expectantly. Taking a deep breath, you stumble through the speech. When it's finally over, you practically run back to your seat, cheeks flaming bright red. You slump down, already dreading the next time you'll have to deal with your upmost fear: public speaking. For as long as I can remember, public speaking has always been one of my greatest weaknesses. Whether it's a simple in–class presentation or a speech in front of an auditorium filled with people, I can barely get my words out from the anxiety and...show more content... I used the search engine Google with the search term "public speaking fear" and it brought up a great deal of interesting websites pertaining to public speaking. The first one I decided to peruse was 5 Tips to Reduce the Fear of Public Speaking on Psychology Today's website. I learned that public speaking is the number one fear in America, while the fear of death is second in line. This means that we're more afraid of speaking in public than we are of dying. I also learned five tips on how to reduce public speaking nervousness. The first one was 'Don't Expect Perfection from Yourself.' No one is perfect but when it comes time to speak in public, some of us pick at every little flaw we think we make. We blow up our imperfections yet ignore the good things. Honestly, though, even the greatest and most experience public speakers can make a lot of mistakes. The difference is, when they do, they're able to gracefully recover and keep going as if nothing happened. That's one of the keys to success: keep going gracefully. Most of the time, the audience won't notice most of your mistakes unless you make them obvious by stopping your speech, breaking down and admitting your mistakes. You just have to carry through with poise and let yourself not be perfect. The second tip was 'Avoid Equating Public Speaking to Your Self –Worth.' Basically, if you're a successful professional who's worked hard for where they are in life right now, you Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Fear In Edgar Allen Poe's Short Stories How We Face Our Fears One of the most unpleasant instincts as a human is fear. It can help us be more aware of our surroundings or prevent us from harming ourselves. Fear is also able to induce us to obsessed with what we worry about the most, causing isolation from reality. The remoteness leads into not being able to enjoy life, or cause major repercussions. In Poe's stories the main characters have to face what they fear the most. The characters either choose to face their fear, or run away from it. Poe uses similes, irony, and imagery to illustrate whether the character's obsessions with fear will lead them to death or prosperity. Edgar Allen Poe uses symbolism to emphasize the way that the character's obsessions with fear lead them towards...show more content... The narrator has begun to become paranoid because of the ВЁvulture eyeВЁ. He becomes so paranoid, that he wants to discard it. The eye, to the narrator, symbolizes judgement. Because he is so focused on the eye, he does not realize that he will just be getting rid of the eye, he will also be killing the old man too. When the narrator does kill the old man, he then realizes that he has made an immense mistake, and guilt possesses him. The narrator's obsession with the eye had blinded him from seeing what retribution he would receive when he tries, or gets rid of it. • 7. The Fear Of Fear : Fear And Fear Fear is an unpleasant feeling which is caused by the awareness of danger according to me. It is something that everyone has to manage no matter what; fear will be fear. Our lives are significantly formed by fears. We cannot escape from the experience of fear and pain. Everyone has their own fears but no matter how people look at it, they all overcome their apprehensions. People have different types of phobias. They are afraid of water, spiders, ghosts, etc. Even I am scared about such things. You know how there's always that one kid who's always terrified of something? Always jumping at the next unsuspecting sound? He is even afraid of his own shadow? Well, I was one of those kids. When I was 10 I had anightmare. I saw that something was ...show more content... Who, or what, could have done something like this? I could feel the distinct sensation that I was being watched. There was this person who did not look into my eyes but kept repeating "Red eyes... Red eyes..." And then, there it was. Those two bright red eyes that I had seen just that very evening. I sat in my car; the whole way home I found myself constantly checking my rearview mirror. No matter how fast I drove, the feeling of being watched never quite went away. When I got home, Shadow was not there to greet me at the door as she always had. The house was silent and dark. I may have felt relief if it were not for the dreadful feeling in my heart. Then, right before my eyes, the shadow of a lady appeared. It did not look like the dark figure I had seen before. In fact, the shadow was my own. It was silhouetted against a bright red light. Oh God! This was the worst nightmare I've ever had and vividly recalled. The worst part was the terror with the red eyes I always saw in that one nightmare. I used to often wake up crying and drenched in sweat for few months. I always got the same feelings of dread and fear whenever I was alone. The thought of someone following me, who had red eyes was constantly knocking my head and I just was not able to concentrate on some important things. I was always conscious of what my surroundings were or what they would become. I would examine the environment literally every fifteen minutes, just couldn't stop thinking about it. • 8. My Fear- Personal Narrative Essay My Fear– Personal Narrative Every child, teenager and adult has experienced anxiety, fear or worry at some time in their lives. Everyone has their own phobias. Some are just temporary whereas others just linger, haunting them forever. Life allows us each of us to experience challenges in our own way. But when these challenges become almost impossible to complete, they become long term problems. When faced with fear, one looks for the easiest route out, but in my case, there were no signposts. There is one part of my life that I vividly recall. I don't really know when or how it started. Maybe I'd had it all my life or maybe it developed at a certain age. Perhaps, that will remain an unsolved...show more content... I didn't know why this was happening and felt that I had no control over my thoughts or fears. By this stage, I would have persistent nightmares of my house burning down where everyone in the building would escape, with the exception of me. I remember how I felt after being awoken by the fear of death. It was a feeling of confusion and I didn't know why this was happening. My phobia totally disabled me and at the time I found it difficult to relax. I live alone with my mum and she was unaware of what I was secretly going through. At the time, I never really opened my eyes to the fact that I had a problem. I told myself that it was just a phase and that I was fine but deep down I think I always knew that this was untrue. Another habit of mine was counting syllables of words. Whenever I would see a shop sign I would count the syllables of the words written and would ensure that the number of syllables did not exceed sixteen (my favourite number). One evening, a friend of mine had visited my home for dinner and I could do nothing but worry about the food overcooking and causing a fire. It would not leave my mind and was all that I could think of. That is when I noticed that my actions were odd. I almost immediately logged on to the internet and searched for fire related obsessions. • 9. Fear And Fear : The Fear Of Fear Some people are afraid of heights; they simply are mortified by them. They're scared to death of even thinking about being in high places, seeing tall buildings or structures and the very worst, actually being at a high elevation. In any of these scenarios people with alto–phobia (the fear of heights) can often get dizzy, experience panic attacks, anxiety and a whole other host of things that would endanger them in certain situations. Luckily, I am not one those people, because if I was, either I wouldn't have a cool story to tell or I'd be dead right now. This little escapade happened when I was around 7 to 8 years old, I'm not entirely sure the age but it was definitely around that period. During that time in the area in which I lived there were these kids who lived really close to me whom I used to muck around with during the summer or whenever. This day in particular was one of those days. My childhood friend Jesiah; who was about two years older than me, wanted to go on one of those adventures we used to go on all the time, so he grabbed another kid (whose name I have forgotten) to come along with us. What we used to do was run through other people's backyards, but it's way more interesting than it sounds, I promise. My house was on a hill, so that the neighbors backyards behind us was almost entirely above my house. Many of their yards had steep climbs, were sometimes very wild, and just fun to run around in and jump from yard to yard. This time, however, we didn't just go into the usual yards we'd go in. For some reason we decided to go one block up and come down to a certain yard that was two houses down, and towered over our house to the point that we could visibly see the roof of the two story house to go around a garage to get to another yard next to it. Now, this would seem tame, if it weren't for the fact that to get around the garage in the first place you had to step on a ledge that was a little less than a foot wide, back against the wall, over a drop that would lower gradually. Mind you this in on the right side, we still hadn't gotten around to the back yet! When we actually reached the back the other kid chickened out and went back to meet us on the other side (which was wise of him, he Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Essay on The Emotion of Fear Fear Do all living things fear something? Those with minds surely have many and various fears, but even the simplest organisms must have fear, for fear is such a powerful feeling. Fear is all around us and is felt in every corner of the earth. Fear is the emotion or feeling that a living creature gets when its physical or mental life is interrupted by a change that causes the creature concern. We humans especially, fear many different things: death, disease, old age, commitment, noises in the night, pain, responsibility, work, being too fat or too thin, or any number of other things. Some of our fears are reasonable and rationale, like the fear for our safety so we lock our doors at night, never walk alone on dark streets, and...show more content... Change, the process of all growth and life, is greeted generally with a feeling of fear. Fears seem to sneak up on us, drenching us in sweat sending our heart rate rocketing, leaving us quaking and shivering. Some fears we see coming and our body and mind prepare to fight or flee. We understand those kinds of fears and can use rational thinking , stress reduction, and plan our actions to combat those fears. Various things help reduce our sense of helplessness, which is a common emotion experienced with fear. One of the things we fear the most is the loss of or lack of control. Even if we really don't have control, we like to think we do, and when we lose that sense of control, fear rushes in. For example, an alcoholic will say " I can quit any time; I'm in control." The fear comes when he realizes for the first time that he is an alcoholic and that he is not in control. We all fear uncertainty and the unknown. We arm ourselves against it with candles in the dark, or faith against the uncertainty of death. Then, when we think we've conquered our fear, it comes invading our minds again, let in by a smell or a taste, a sound or a thought Fear is always there, just waiting right under the surface, to awaken those memories which frighten us the most. Fear can come anytime in the silence of the night or in the bright glare of the day. Fear cannot be conquered. We Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. The Fears Of Fear : Fear Of Darkness I've always had fears in the back of my mind but as I've got older I have come realize that they were childish and silly thoughts that stopped me from achieving big things. The first fear I had was Nycophobia or in other words the fear of darkness. I could distinctly remember when I could see shadows on the wall which in my mind were monsters, ghosts. The fear of darkness is a common phobia to have but to me it was more than just a fear it was an integral part of my life. Most young children can go to bed and fall asleep without any hassle, however in my case going to bed was like being sent to death. There I would lay on my bed in a dark room when I would see a shadow zoom past the wall causing me to scream like a little girl, it was embarrassing. Then again, this was only one of the encounters I had with 'spirit world' but there was one encounter and this was the worst of all, it was that scary it could frighten a grown man. And it all started at my little old grans house. My granny's house lay on a narrow street next to the graveyard which really spooked me out, however I did have my granny to look after me, right? No, instead of sleeping in my grans nice cosy bedroom that night I had to sleep downstairs on my own in my uncle's old room. This room was the complete opposite of my grans it was a cold and smelly old room which was almost non liveable. Despite this, I did have a huge double bed all to myself. I arrived and I was dreading it, it is not normal to leave a 5 Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Reflection About Fear Failure is a lesson everyone will learn from, but the fear of falling into the same traps that others around me have can make or break me. Temptations such as drugs, not graduating or not being financially stable is a fear of mine. Not everyone thinks of these things, they just go day by day and live unaware of their circumstance. But when you acknowledge the fact that there are problems you're one step closer to finding a resolution. This isn't a problem everyone faces, it's just a thought that might have lingered one time or another throughout life. With all honesty I believe the environment in which a person lives can have an effect on their chances to succeed in life. How determined you are to beat the odds, to avoid drugs, focusing on school, and live within your means might determine if you face the problem of what many calls "the struggle". Drugs can become very addictive and while seeing the affect it has of some of the people I love made me fear becoming them because I face most of the problems they face the idea of wanting to be numb the thought of needing something or someone more than what I provide is a scary feeling. I imagine what it's like the musty odor of unwashed skin, reeking of weed smoke with a mixture of burnt plastic. Seeing the coming and going of half a man all skin and bones feeling the pain of everyone in the room. You become consumed by the next fix I seen it happen to the best of people. • 13. My Greatest Fear In Life My biggest fear in life is failure. I always try to prove myself to others and make sure that I can get the task done on the first try. In life, there will always be mistakes made and that is where I am still learning. The fear of upsetting someone because of my own optimal performance can be a positive objective to overcome. Once I overcome that fear I have more choices to do what I want instead of what others want me to do. The fear of not living up to someone's expectation is a fear that most teenagers suffer especially in high school. High school you are expected to keep certain standards. Your senior year you have to perform your senior exit, make time to do good on the ACT and SAT, and search for a suitable college. Parents will apply stress on their kids and not realize that it can affect their kids in a bad way, but in the end helps in a good way. As a high school senior, I have experienced this situation first hand. I am afraid of not making my parents happy with my accomplishments, which means that I don't want to disappoint them with any mishaps. I've come to the realization that I can't be perfect for other people. It's about how much work I put in just to prove myself to them despite the outcome. In life, you go through trial and errors and must learn from your mistakes and grow from them. This fear has limited my ability to do what I think is right. • 16. Essay on Phobias Phobias Fear is a normal and an important human reaction to something dangerous, it keeps one out of danger, because fear is disliked and one tries ones best to avoid the object or situation of fear. It causes physical changes known as fight–or–flight reaction, which causes blood pressure to increase and the heart rate to speed up to pump blood to the large muscles used to run away, to balance this the human body has sweat glands which produce perspiration to cool the body. Due the change in daily routine, this unrealistic fear can interfere with the ability to socialize, work, or go about everyday life, brought on by and object, event or situation. But even animals have anxieties and phobias just as every human being (www.phobia–help.de). A phobia is an irrational fear, one knows that the object or situation, one is scared off, can not hurt one, but one is still afraid. A reason for this is that the human mind can not distinguish what is real and imaginary. When one has uncontrollable anxiety attacks, he loses rational judgement, leading to complicated problems. However, anyone can develop a phobia, men and women, teens and young adults, and elderly lady or a one–year–old boy (MacKay). Thereby it is not completely clear, what the causes for phobia are. Phobia is often caused by something scary that happened earlier in somebody's life, but not every one develop phobias after special experiences. An explanation for this could be that for some people certain parts of the brain and specific neural pathways are associated with phobias. It is Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Everyone has some type of fear or phobia that absolutely petrifies them. Whether it's a fear of snakes, swimming, or even germs, it can be conquered as I discovered. That day I overcame my fear of heights took place at Six Flags over Texas. The day started out with my five friends and me going to a Student Council convention. After the convention we were granted access to Six Flags for the whole day. Now the only problem for me was Six Flags had roller coasters....show more content... As I climbed each step I tried numerous times to escape. The escape attempts were foiled by my so called friends blocking the only exit. I said," Come on guys I can die another day." Audrey quipped," Oh come on Taylor, man up and go on the ride." Now I can't really describe the feeling of having a woman tell me to man up. I said," Ok I got this." I shrugged off all my anxiety and nerves and just went with it. I started feeling confident as I waited in line. Finally the moment arrived where I took my seat on the coaster. At this point my anxiety and fear came rushing back all at once and my blood even seemed to boil. I realized though if I didn't do this now I probably never would. So I pulled the bar over my stomach and tried not to puke. I closed my eyes as the ride ascended from the platform and came to a stop at the peak. I opened my eyes to nothing but the skyline. I said," Guys if I survive this I'm going to kill you all." The moment of truth was upon me now. The Coaster was at the mercy of gravity as we descended the massive drop. In the split second I had before we fell off the earth I knew there was nothing I could do to stop ride. As I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Fear Essay: Fear And The Fear Of Fear Fear is something every single human being has at some point in their life. When you are in dangerous, threatening, or scary situations, fear is what your body will feel. It is the ability to identify danger and make a choice to either confront that fear or flee from the situation like for example, if you were to break a vase, you would hide from your parents. That choice is completely up to the victim, and depends on the person. Although fear is handled differently by every person, it is a common emotion that everyone feels. Some seek out to overcome their fears, and seek the feeling of adrenaline they get from overcoming. Others flee the situation and don't think twice about trying to overcome their fear. Our imagination is usually a bit too clear for our minds, and our worst–case scenarios can go above and beyond with the fears that we have for things. In most cases, the thing we fear may not turn out as bad as we can imagine. When we want to give up on something in any kind of situation, we lack the panorama to see how things end up. Maybe the most important lesson is that we do not need to remove any kind of fear in our life. We can welcome fear with our life and cope with it. Next time you are fearful about anything don't make it a big thing and fight through it. Fears can be pretty rational because there are some choices and risks you will have to take because you never know if it's going to be the right choice just like in the video "What fear can teach us".
