with fear and insecurity, hoping 'they'll
want us,' and don't think about the
established market value of
what we bring to the table.

You’re coming from a genuine place. There’s
nothing wrong with asking.
You’ll receive more respect when you advocate
for yourself.
It pays to be confident. Build a strong rationale.
If the answer is no, so what?
PREP YOUR STRATEGY
List all the issues you’re negotiating in the order
of most importance. (You can then concede on
what’s least important to you first.)
If this negotiation fails, what’s your alternative?
The more options you have, the more power
you have.
What’s your bottom line? How low are you
willing to go? This information is for your
eyes only.
What’s your ideal number or situation? Be
honest with yourself. Aim high (but base it on
research and reasoning)!
Then, ask for a little higher than that number.
You’ve got power! What makes you unique?
What’s the value you’re offering? Do you
have a Plan B? What’s your track record?
Write it all out.
Negotiation is about creative problem solving.
To solve a problem creatively, you have to
understand the other person.
Put yourself in her shoes. What are her issues?
What’s her target? What advantage does she have
over you? Does she have a plan B? Brainstorm and
cover your bases.
If you don’t know…
Dig deeper.
Ask questions.
Do more research.
Have a conversation to find out more.
