AUSTRALASIAN SOCIETY OF ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVES ANNUAL UPDATE 2014-2015
2014 -2015 AuSAE Annual Update
The Australasian Society of Association Executives (AuSAE) believes in the importance and influence of
the not-for-profit sector. AuSAE exists to equip individual leaders to advance their careers and better
achieve the vision of the not-for-profit organisations they represent. AuSAE carries out a broad range
of activities across Australia and New Zealand annually to realise this mission. With the many exciting
changes AuSAE has undergone in recent times, we have sought to capture some of the highlights of
recent years.
AUSAE VISION
To be the pre-eminent organisation equipping individual leaders to achieve the vision
of their not-for-profit organisation.
KEY STRATEGIES
To position AuSAE to achieve this vision now, and into the future, we are implementing the following key
strategies:
Strategy 1: Ensure the member experience reflects the AuSAE vision
1.1 Segment and prioritise existing and potential members in Australia and New Zealand
1.2 Develop process to measure and report on member experience
Strategy 2: Develop strong member communities
2.1 Enhance the Chapter structure to provide increased value and engagement
2.2 Develop and implement innovative member communities to maximise member
	 engagement
Strategy 3: Position AuSAE for strong future growth
3.1 Develop governance and transition policies and procedures
3.2 Develop collateral, reporting frameworks, operational policies and procedures
	 to support growth
Strategy 4: Enhance the profile and credibility of AuSAE
4.1 Enhance profile and credibility in key sectors

It is with pride that I prepare my final comments
as President of AuSAE for the 2014-2015 annual
update publication. The changes that have occurred
within AuSAE during my tenure on the Board
have been simply astounding to see. From the
merger between Australia and New Zealand to the
reinvigoration of the society and the revitalisation
of our annual conference there have been many
highlights. We’ve achieved so much over just a few
short years and the future looks very exciting.
Since my appointment as President of AuSAE
in 2012, I have been listening to our members,
Board members, staff and stakeholders in order
to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses of the
organisation. We had the opportunity to convert
that into action in January 2014 when the AuSAE
Board, management and other AuSAE stakeholders
took part in a strategic planning session run by
Steven Bowman from Conscious Governance. This
session produced our 2014-2016 strategic plan and
united us all behind a single agreed vision:
To be the pre-eminent organisation equipping
individual leaders to achieve the vision of their not-
for-profit organisation.
From this vision we’ve developed a comprehensive
strategic plan that is focussed around developing
tailored experience depending on member needs
and experience, building powerful member
communities, and creating a solid foundation for
future growth.
I have always believed that being a member of
AuSAE is more than just about attending networking
events and receiving useful information. It’s
about building connections for our professional
Presidents Message
and personal futures, which is why I was happy to
volunteer on the local Tasmanian committee and as
AuSAE President. One of the privileges of my terms
as President has been the opportunity to attend
events around Australia and New Zealand and to
get to meet so many of the members. It has also
been fascinating to see the transformation in the
not-for-profit landscape as a whole but also from an
association professional standpoint.
A significant success has been the fact that we have
had elections for the first time in very many years,
the New Zealand and NSW/ACT Board position were
both contested and the calibre of the candidates
was staggering.
On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Belinda
Moore and the AuSAE staff for their hard work and
thank our members for their ongoing activity and
support.
It is an exciting time for AuSAE going forward.
I believe we are on the cusp of a new way of
operating and can contribute much value to the not-
for-profit profession. I look forward to continuing to
participate in the AuSAE community and keeping in
touch with so many of my sector peers.
Regards

In 2014 AuSAE turned 60. In 2013-2014 AuSAE experienced a period of unparalleled growth reaching significant milestones including
the largest membership peak this decade, number of corporate partners and supporters, events run in one year across Australasia,
and the largest staff team in over a decade with now 6 dedicated AuSAE staff serving our membership base. Let’s take a look at the
AuSAE journey over 60 years.

AUSTRALASIAN SOCIETY OF ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVES ANNUAL UPDATE 2014-2015
5
I am always being asked is how I came to be
both CEO of AuSAE in addition to my role as with
Strategic Membership Solutions. In this, my last
CEO report as AuSAE CEO, I would like to take the
opportunity to share this story with you.
My very first consultancy role came from a
15 minute speaking opportunity at an AuSAE
conference in the 90s. I was working in an
association at the time and had developed a
model for recruiting and retaining members that
had proven highly successful. I was offered the
opportunity to speak at the conference and the rest,
as they say, is history.
At that time the AuSAE conferences and other
events were one of the few opportunities to engage
with other sector professionals and I really enjoyed
them. The personal connections I made during that
time greatly supported me throughout my career.
From the early 2000s AuSAE entered a period of
decline. Merger discussions between the Australian
and New Zealand were the joint boards first steps
to turn the organisation(s) around. The new AuSAE
Board was also looking for stronger management,
member commitment, and member growth. It was
about this time I was also having thoughts about
how the value proposition for AuSAE could return
to its former glory days. So in 2012 my husband
Julian Moore and I approached the Board with a
somewhat unusual proposal. Both parties were
eager to see AuSAE regain its previous preeminent
position within the sector. SMS then set about a
plan to grow AuSAE.
To provide AuSAE with the security and resources
required to enable quick growth, we agreed to
assume the full financial risk for the turnaround
and underwrote the entire process from the SMS
reserves. All costs, including staff, office furniture,
events, and other on-costs became the full financial
responsibility of SMS. For expediency, all AuSAE
expenses and income were channelled through
CEO’s Report
SMS. This turnaround process involved a number of
different strategies including:
• Securing high value income sources
– Through implementing an annual
partnership structure that provided industry
exclusivity at a higher price AuSAE was
able to develop a compelling sponsor value
proposition. This “closed door” approach to
managing industry suppliers was a critical
success factor in the initial stages of the
turnaround.
• Creating a quality marketing database – SMS
utilised its own personal contacts to quickly
grow AuSAE’s community to over 10,000
individuals operating within the Australasian
sector.
• Creating a baseline of activity in key
locations – Engagement is a critical element
of member recruitment and retention. A
lot of effort has been put into creating a
baseline of activity that can be further built
on and refined. This was part of a strategy
that sought to start to reposition the
association with stakeholders as a facilitator
of networking opportunities for senior level
executives from the sector.
• Creating a “Community” rather than
a “Marketplace” – Other associations
have allowed themselves to become a
marketplace that is swamped with suppliers.
This quickly alienates existing and potential
members and leads to rapid membership
decline. Strategies were implemented to
focus on building member communities – as
these are much more difficult for others to
compete against.
We were pleased to see the turnaround program
take off. During 2013 AuSAE grew from 135 to
508 members. This represented a 376% increase
in membership. Now, in April 2015, we have just
AUSTRALASIAN SOCIETY OF ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVES ANNUAL UPDATE 2014-2015
6
finished the renewal process and at 876 financial
members. During 2013 SMS saw AuSAE related
income reach just under $470,000. These funds
were reinvested into growth. In 2014 just over
$650,000 in income was receipted. During 2015 we
are already on track for the turnover of AuSAE to
exceed $1,000,000.
The success of this turnaround program was due
to a combination of factors. At a strategic level, it
was exceedingly helpful that the AuSAE Board were
willing to work with SMS to find a pathway through
previously untested waters. The rapid growth rate
has changed the landscape several times and there
has been a lot of trust required on both sides to
make it work. Without the ongoing flexibility of
everyone in the process the turnaround could not
have been successful.
At an operational level, the turnaround would
have been nowhere near as successful without the
support of one of the most amazing staff teams
I have ever had the good fortune to work with. I
cannot thank my team enough for the amazing level
of dedication and commitment they have to AuSAE.
There were a couple of things I didn’t count on
happening during this journey. AuSAE was supposed
to be an interesting side project to my “real” job
at SMS. But the rapid turnaround meant quite a
significant workload for both myself and Julian.
Two full time jobs combined with a variety of
volunteer commitments made life somewhat
impossibly full. Then, in April 2014, the arrival of
my second child made things beyond crazy. Short of
squeezing in another week between Monday and
Tuesday, I could not give all my commitments the
full time and attention they all deserved.
It was also becoming increasingly apparent that
the current arrangements could not continue
indefinitely. As long as AuSAE was being managed
by SMS it lacked the ability to fully realise its
destiny as the peak society of association leaders
in Australasia. So the decision was made that,
from May 11, 2015, SMS will pass full control and
ownership of the operations (including assets and
staff) to AuSAE.
At that time I will hand also finish my tenure as CEO
and pass over the reins to someone with the time
available to continue to realise the very bright future
before AuSAE.
I won’t be disappearing though! After my tenure
as CEO is complete I will be co-opted to the Board.
This gives me the ability to continue making an
active contribution from a governance level to an
organisation I love.
Thank you to all those reading this report. None
of this would have happened without those of you
who have joined as a member, renewed, attended
events, and come along for the ride so far. It was
your support that has helped put AuSAE back where
it belongs. Thank you. Your support has been greatly
appreciated.
Warm regards,
Belinda Moore

2014 saw AuSAE build the foundations for growth
with a period of significant strategic positioning for
AuSAE with the implementation of key elements of
the strategic plan 2014-2016.
Our member community has continued to grow, we
opened our New Zealand office and the AuSAE team
ran over 100 events to support our not-for-profit
professional members including two Leadership
Symposiums in Sydney, Australia and Rotorua, New
Zealand. Other noteworthy 2014 events included
the AuSAE workshop, networking and executive
briefing series held in 6 locations across Australia
and 2 regions in New Zealand. These face-to-
face opportunities allow our members and the
wider not-for-profit community to connect, share
workplace challenges and gain insights shared from
special guest speakers.
Ensure the member experience reflects the
AuSAE vision Member Services
AuSAE Advantage
AuSAE Advantage is AuSAE’s secure member online
portal providing support in the form of templates,
research reports, short professional development
videos, webinars, and exclusive discounts on
services not-for-profit organisations need including
insurance, technology, office supplies, legal
assistance, accountancy, governance and more.
New/Renewing Member Kits
In 2014 AuSAE began sending member kits to all
new and renewing members. The purpose of these
kits is to provide members with a printed overview
of AuSAE’s 2015 services as well as a record of their
membership join and expiry date. We hope this will

serve as a reminder for members joining mid-year
that AuSAE pro-ratas our membership. Another
benefit is now AuSAE organisational members have
a record of who is linked to the membership and
how many
Develop strong member communities
AuSAE Assist
In October 2015, the AuSAE team put strong
processes in place to assist members looking
to solve organisational challenges. Through
communication with AuSAE member topic experts
via our database and with sector partners, the
AuSAE team endeavour tofind the resource or
answer an individual is looking for. With such a
wealth of talented professionals in the not-for-profit
sector that the AuSAE team can reach, we are now
promoting this as a member benefit and it is already
very popular with a record number of January 2015
email and phone call enquiries.
AuSAE Online
Launched in July 2014, ‘AuSAE Online’ allows
members to connect with peers, share knowledge
and resources, seek information and participate
in discussions with like-minded individuals
regardless of their location of residence. The AuSAE
Communications Coordinator drives engagement
and ensures all queries receive a response within 3
working days (this often involves contacting other
members to assist the individual with the query).
We have received very favourable feedback from
those assisted through this community.

New Zealand Office
In June, AuSAE announced the appointment of Brett
Jeffery as General Manager New Zealand. Brett
Jeffery is a long term AuSAE member and has served
on the AuSAE board for the past five years. The
appointment reaffirmed AuSAE’s commitment to
strengthening the New Zealand and Australian Not-
for-profit sector by providing localised networking
and professional development opportunities for all
not-for-profit leaders.
Position AuSAE for strong future growth
During 2014 we developed considered policies,
procedures and documentation to ensure the
association is governed and operated in the most
“best practice” manner possible. This process is
still ongoing but to date we have implemented
very strong operational processes and a Board
Governance manual.
Enhance the profile and credibility of AuSAE
AuSAE TV
In late 2014, AuSAE meet with partner Redback
Conferencing to discuss launching a very special
program for not-for-profit executives in 2015.
Launched in February 2015, AuSAE TV is a collection
of pre-recorded webcast and on-demand webinar
interviews on topics highly relevant to AuSAE’s
not-for-profit professional members. A new video
is released weekly via AuSAE’s newsletter AuSAE
Insider and then stored online on the official AuSAE
TV platform hosted by Redback Conferencing. The
objective of AuSAE TV is to enable AuSAE members
to gain valuable insights from sector leaders willing
to share their real life experiences in members own
time (on-demand viewing) and offers no location
barriers. These shared insights, both lessons learnt
and successes, just may be the key to advancing a
members career or setting an individual on the path
to achieve their organisations vision.
AuSAE Insider Communication
In late 2014, the AuSAE team reviewed our
communications structure with the view to re-
focus our communication efforts. The result was
‘AuSAE Insider’, launched in February 2015. The
decision was made to create Insider due to the
growing quantity of information AuSAE wanted to
share with our members, the need to consolidate
commuications and increase perceived membership
value. AuSAE Insider features: Sector and AuSAE
News, Upcoming Events, Resources, Partner
Showcase and further links to AuSAE Assist, AuSAE
Online and the AuSAE Jobs Board.
Social Media
AuSAE has a strong social media presence on Twitter,
Facebook and LinkedIn. We utilise each platform
differently, based on the different audiences
participating in these channels. AuSAE has (as at
April 2015) 1,184 Twitter followers, 149 likes on our
Facebook page, 154 followers on LinkedIn and 162
members on the AuSAE LinkedIn Group.
Website
Relaunched in May 2014, the AuSAE website
serves various purposes to our audience. It is the
organisations face, illustrating who we are and
what we do to. It is a hub for members to access
content and resources only available to current
financial members. It serves as place where current
news, events and job/career information is hosted
and displayed for visitors to access. Potential
members can access more information about AUSAE
membership and join and pay through the website
portal.

Networking Lunch Series
AuSAE’s Networking Lunch series continues in 2015 following two strong years. This series has proven
valuable for member prospecting, current member satisfaction and is also an Annual Partner benefit
offering the opportunity for our partners to meet not-for-profit professionals.
Workshop Series
AuSAE workshops run in 2014 were well received, high income providers for the society and resulted in a
number of new members joining to access the highly discounted member registration rates. Many of the
topics planned were requested by members and there is a need for practical education in key areas. This is a
great way to provide training that enables members to achieve tangible operational outcomes.
Executive Briefings
AuSAE Briefings were introduced in 2014 to better serve our members need for discussion based session
and peer to peer professional development. Several briefing series were also run to service AuSAE’s annual
partners who had educational content to share, in turn benefiting the members who attended.
Executive Circles
In 2015 AuSAE members have volunteered to run monthly member gatherings in Auckland, Wellington,
Hobart and Brisbane. This event type involves a minimal staff commitment, no funding and our members
are responding favourably to the event type with numbers growing month to month.

Associations Matter Study
Survey Matters conducted a research project last
year into professional associations and AuSAE took
part. AuSAE obtained the results specific to our
organisation which were benchmarked against the
other participating professional associations. It was
pleasing to see AuSAE had improved significantly
from the previous time of participating two years
ago. Following include some of the survey results
highlights.
• 86% of members are satisfied with AuSAE’s
performance in keeping them up to date
with information and development in the
profession. This is an important function of
associations with 97% of members rating this
function as important or critical.
• 80% of members agree they are treated as a
valued member of the association.
• Finally, 87% of members are satisfied or
extremely satisfied with their membership. This
compares to 73% in the Study overall.
Survey Matters have embarked on a unique series
of research programs to deliver association’s
benchmark data about the opinions, preferences
and motivations of their members. This research is
the first of its kind in Australasia to seek feedback
from members across the entire association and
non-profit sector, and AuSAE is proud to be part of
these landmark studies.
Leadership Symposiums
In 2014, our Leadership Symposiums in Sydney,
Australia and Rotorua, New Zealand continued to
provide members and the wider AuSAE community
with the opportunity to learn from and network
with other leaders in the not-for-profit sector. Both
events in 2014 were highly successful at increasing
membership, providing educational and networking
opportunities for members, as well as providing
value for our annual and event partners. Delegate
feedback was overwhelming positive with the
majority of respondents rating the range of topics,
content relevance, venue/location, networking
opportunities and value for money as good or
excellent (see figures below). In 2015 the Australian
event has been re-branded to the AuSAE Conference
and Exhibition (ACE). After significant feedback from
members it was decided to run the event in June
and add an exhibition component.
Membership
Membership of AuSAE has grown steadily in
this turnaround phase. AuSAE membership is
concentrated in the Industry Association/Trade Body
and Professional Association sector with a strong
showing for public benefit entities (such as charities
and social service organisations). These three
segments are all currently growing strongly.

  • 3. It is with pride that I prepare my final comments as President of AuSAE for the 2014-2015 annual update publication. The changes that have occurred within AuSAE during my tenure on the Board have been simply astounding to see. From the merger between Australia and New Zealand to the reinvigoration of the society and the revitalisation of our annual conference there have been many highlights. We’ve achieved so much over just a few short years and the future looks very exciting. Since my appointment as President of AuSAE in 2012, I have been listening to our members, Board members, staff and stakeholders in order to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses of the organisation. We had the opportunity to convert that into action in January 2014 when the AuSAE Board, management and other AuSAE stakeholders took part in a strategic planning session run by Steven Bowman from Conscious Governance. This session produced our 2014-2016 strategic plan and united us all behind a single agreed vision: To be the pre-eminent organisation equipping individual leaders to achieve the vision of their not- for-profit organisation. From this vision we’ve developed a comprehensive strategic plan that is focussed around developing tailored experience depending on member needs and experience, building powerful member communities, and creating a solid foundation for future growth. I have always believed that being a member of AuSAE is more than just about attending networking events and receiving useful information. It’s about building connections for our professional Presidents Message and personal futures, which is why I was happy to volunteer on the local Tasmanian committee and as AuSAE President. One of the privileges of my terms as President has been the opportunity to attend events around Australia and New Zealand and to get to meet so many of the members. It has also been fascinating to see the transformation in the not-for-profit landscape as a whole but also from an association professional standpoint. A significant success has been the fact that we have had elections for the first time in very many years, the New Zealand and NSW/ACT Board position were both contested and the calibre of the candidates was staggering. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Belinda Moore and the AuSAE staff for their hard work and thank our members for their ongoing activity and support. It is an exciting time for AuSAE going forward. I believe we are on the cusp of a new way of operating and can contribute much value to the not- for-profit profession. I look forward to continuing to participate in the AuSAE community and keeping in touch with so many of my sector peers. • 6. In 2014 AuSAE turned 60. In 2013-2014 AuSAE experienced a period of unparalleled growth reaching significant milestones including the largest membership peak this decade, number of corporate partners and supporters, events run in one year across Australasia, and the largest staff team in over a decade with now 6 dedicated AuSAE staff serving our membership base. Let’s take a look at the AuSAE journey over 60 years. 60 years in review The Secretaries Club was founded in Victoria during a conference held at the Australian Administrative Staff College. The foundation membership consisted of 25 members. AuSAE was originally called The Secretaries Club after the organisation in the UK that was established in 1933 (and is now known as the Institute of Association Management). 1954 Membership to The Secretaries Club grew steadily when the rules were changed to allow other executives to join, as well as a corporate supplier membership. In fact The Secretaries Club financial membership reached over 800 in the late 1960’s. 1960 The Secretaries Club rebranded to become the Society of Association Executives (AuSAE). 1961 New South Wales Society of Association Executives was formed. 1967 Western Australia Society of Association Executives was formed. 1969 The National body was established. 1985 A national constitution was adopted. 1991 Queensland Society of Association Executives was formed. 1984 The New Zealand Society of Association Executives was founded in Auckland. The Australian Society of Association Executives hosted the 3rd World Congress of Societies of Association Executives in Sydney. 1993 AuSAE registered under Companies’ Law. Establishment of a Masters in Association Management at a leading University, and two residential courses in association management at a leading business college. 1994 In the mid 90’s, six divisions and a National body were established, with professional staff secretariat offices at a national and State level. 1995 In 2015 AuSAE finalised negotiations to acquire the operations of from Strategic Membership Solutions enabling them to the secretariat operations in house. As part of these Belinda Moore resigned as CEO and joined the Board. 2015 The New Zealand Society of Association Executives rebranded to Associations New Zealand Incorporated (ANZi) with a strategy to provide services to all levels of a NFP organisation from board member to new employee recruits. 2004 MOU with CSAE and AuSAE gives AuSAE the Certified Association Executive Accreditation to offer to members. 2006 January 2009, when PAMS was appointed. PAMS (Professional Association Management Services Pty Ltd) is an Association Management company, based in Melbourne, managing around 20 NFPs. 2009 The Australian Society of Association Executives merged with Associations New Zealand to become the Australasian Society of Association Executives. 2011 In October 2012 Strategic Membership Solutions became the secretariat of AuSAE and began an ambitious transition program. As this program was funded by SMS and run entirely at their financial risk the operations of the association were run separately to the association. 2012 By the end of 2014 AuSAE has undergone a period of unparalleled growth reaching significant milestones including: largest membership peak this decade with over 800 financial members and a community exceeding 11,000 executives. a successful partnership program, 100 events run in one year and a staff team of six. 2014 AUSTRALASIAN SOCIETY OF ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVES ANNUAL UPDATE 2014-2015 5
  • 7. I am always being asked is how I came to be both CEO of AuSAE in addition to my role as with Strategic Membership Solutions. In this, my last CEO report as AuSAE CEO, I would like to take the opportunity to share this story with you. My very first consultancy role came from a 15 minute speaking opportunity at an AuSAE conference in the 90s. I was working in an association at the time and had developed a model for recruiting and retaining members that had proven highly successful. I was offered the opportunity to speak at the conference and the rest, as they say, is history. At that time the AuSAE conferences and other events were one of the few opportunities to engage with other sector professionals and I really enjoyed them. The personal connections I made during that time greatly supported me throughout my career. From the early 2000s AuSAE entered a period of decline. Merger discussions between the Australian and New Zealand were the joint boards first steps to turn the organisation(s) around. The new AuSAE Board was also looking for stronger management, member commitment, and member growth. It was about this time I was also having thoughts about how the value proposition for AuSAE could return to its former glory days. So in 2012 my husband Julian Moore and I approached the Board with a somewhat unusual proposal. Both parties were eager to see AuSAE regain its previous preeminent position within the sector. SMS then set about a plan to grow AuSAE. To provide AuSAE with the security and resources required to enable quick growth, we agreed to assume the full financial risk for the turnaround and underwrote the entire process from the SMS reserves. All costs, including staff, office furniture, events, and other on-costs became the full financial responsibility of SMS. For expediency, all AuSAE expenses and income were channelled through CEO’s Report SMS. This turnaround process involved a number of different strategies including: • Securing high value income sources – Through implementing an annual partnership structure that provided industry exclusivity at a higher price AuSAE was able to develop a compelling sponsor value proposition. This “closed door” approach to managing industry suppliers was a critical success factor in the initial stages of the turnaround. • Creating a quality marketing database – SMS utilised its own personal contacts to quickly grow AuSAE’s community to over 10,000 individuals operating within the Australasian sector. • Creating a baseline of activity in key locations – Engagement is a critical element of member recruitment and retention. A lot of effort has been put into creating a baseline of activity that can be further built on and refined. This was part of a strategy that sought to start to reposition the association with stakeholders as a facilitator of networking opportunities for senior level executives from the sector. • Creating a “Community” rather than a “Marketplace” – Other associations have allowed themselves to become a marketplace that is swamped with suppliers. This quickly alienates existing and potential members and leads to rapid membership decline. Strategies were implemented to focus on building member communities – as these are much more difficult for others to compete against. We were pleased to see the turnaround program take off. During 2013 AuSAE grew from 135 to 508 members. This represented a 376% increase in membership. Now, in April 2015, we have just AUSTRALASIAN SOCIETY OF ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVES ANNUAL UPDATE 2014-2015 6
  • 8. finished the renewal process and at 876 financial members. During 2013 SMS saw AuSAE related income reach just under $470,000. These funds were reinvested into growth. In 2014 just over $650,000 in income was receipted. During 2015 we are already on track for the turnover of AuSAE to exceed $1,000,000. The success of this turnaround program was due to a combination of factors. At a strategic level, it was exceedingly helpful that the AuSAE Board were willing to work with SMS to find a pathway through previously untested waters. The rapid growth rate has changed the landscape several times and there has been a lot of trust required on both sides to make it work. Without the ongoing flexibility of everyone in the process the turnaround could not have been successful. At an operational level, the turnaround would have been nowhere near as successful without the support of one of the most amazing staff teams I have ever had the good fortune to work with. I cannot thank my team enough for the amazing level of dedication and commitment they have to AuSAE. There were a couple of things I didn’t count on happening during this journey. AuSAE was supposed to be an interesting side project to my “real” job at SMS. But the rapid turnaround meant quite a significant workload for both myself and Julian. Two full time jobs combined with a variety of volunteer commitments made life somewhat impossibly full. Then, in April 2014, the arrival of my second child made things beyond crazy. Short of squeezing in another week between Monday and Tuesday, I could not give all my commitments the full time and attention they all deserved. It was also becoming increasingly apparent that the current arrangements could not continue indefinitely. As long as AuSAE was being managed by SMS it lacked the ability to fully realise its destiny as the peak society of association leaders in Australasia. So the decision was made that, from May 11, 2015, SMS will pass full control and ownership of the operations (including assets and staff) to AuSAE. At that time I will hand also finish my tenure as CEO and pass over the reins to someone with the time available to continue to realise the very bright future before AuSAE. I won’t be disappearing though! After my tenure as CEO is complete I will be co-opted to the Board. This gives me the ability to continue making an active contribution from a governance level to an organisation I love. Thank you to all those reading this report. None of this would have happened without those of you who have joined as a member, renewed, attended events, and come along for the ride so far. It was your support that has helped put AuSAE back where it belongs. Thank you. Your support has been greatly appreciated. Warm regards, Belinda Moore Chief Executive Officer Australasian Society of Association Executives AUSTRALASIAN SOCIETY OF ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVES ANNUAL UPDATE 2014-2015 7
  • 9. 2014 saw AuSAE build the foundations for growth with a period of significant strategic positioning for AuSAE with the implementation of key elements of the strategic plan 2014-2016. Our member community has continued to grow, we opened our New Zealand office and the AuSAE team ran over 100 events to support our not-for-profit professional members including two Leadership Symposiums in Sydney, Australia and Rotorua, New Zealand. Other noteworthy 2014 events included the AuSAE workshop, networking and executive briefing series held in 6 locations across Australia and 2 regions in New Zealand. These face-to- face opportunities allow our members and the wider not-for-profit community to connect, share workplace challenges and gain insights shared from special guest speakers. Ensure the member experience reflects the AuSAE vision Member Services AuSAE Advantage AuSAE Advantage is AuSAE’s secure member online portal providing support in the form of templates, research reports, short professional development videos, webinars, and exclusive discounts on services not-for-profit organisations need including insurance, technology, office supplies, legal assistance, accountancy, governance and more. New/Renewing Member Kits In 2014 AuSAE began sending member kits to all new and renewing members. The purpose of these kits is to provide members with a printed overview of AuSAE’s 2015 services as well as a record of their membership join and expiry date. We hope this will 2014 Year in Review serve as a reminder for members joining mid-year that AuSAE pro-ratas our membership. Another benefit is now AuSAE organisational members have a record of who is linked to the membership and how many Develop strong member communities AuSAE Assist In October 2015, the AuSAE team put strong processes in place to assist members looking to solve organisational challenges. Through communication with AuSAE member topic experts via our database and with sector partners, the AuSAE team endeavour tofind the resource or answer an individual is looking for. With such a wealth of talented professionals in the not-for-profit sector that the AuSAE team can reach, we are now promoting this as a member benefit and it is already very popular with a record number of January 2015 email and phone call enquiries. AuSAE Online Launched in July 2014, ‘AuSAE Online’ allows members to connect with peers, share knowledge and resources, seek information and participate in discussions with like-minded individuals regardless of their location of residence. The AuSAE Communications Coordinator drives engagement and ensures all queries receive a response within 3 working days (this often involves contacting other members to assist the individual with the query). We have received very favourable feedback from those assisted through this community. AUSTRALASIAN SOCIETY OF ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVES ANNUAL UPDATE 2014-2015 8
  • 10. New Zealand Office In June, AuSAE announced the appointment of Brett Jeffery as General Manager New Zealand. Brett Jeffery is a long term AuSAE member and has served on the AuSAE board for the past five years. The appointment reaffirmed AuSAE’s commitment to strengthening the New Zealand and Australian Not- for-profit sector by providing localised networking and professional development opportunities for all not-for-profit leaders. Position AuSAE for strong future growth During 2014 we developed considered policies, procedures and documentation to ensure the association is governed and operated in the most “best practice” manner possible. This process is still ongoing but to date we have implemented very strong operational processes and a Board Governance manual. Enhance the profile and credibility of AuSAE AuSAE TV In late 2014, AuSAE meet with partner Redback Conferencing to discuss launching a very special program for not-for-profit executives in 2015. Launched in February 2015, AuSAE TV is a collection of pre-recorded webcast and on-demand webinar interviews on topics highly relevant to AuSAE’s not-for-profit professional members. A new video is released weekly via AuSAE’s newsletter AuSAE Insider and then stored online on the official AuSAE TV platform hosted by Redback Conferencing. The objective of AuSAE TV is to enable AuSAE members to gain valuable insights from sector leaders willing to share their real life experiences in members own time (on-demand viewing) and offers no location barriers. These shared insights, both lessons learnt and successes, just may be the key to advancing a members career or setting an individual on the path to achieve their organisations vision. AuSAE Insider Communication In late 2014, the AuSAE team reviewed our communications structure with the view to re- focus our communication efforts. The result was ‘AuSAE Insider’, launched in February 2015. The decision was made to create Insider due to the growing quantity of information AuSAE wanted to share with our members, the need to consolidate commuications and increase perceived membership value. AuSAE Insider features: Sector and AuSAE News, Upcoming Events, Resources, Partner Showcase and further links to AuSAE Assist, AuSAE Online and the AuSAE Jobs Board. Social Media AuSAE has a strong social media presence on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. We utilise each platform differently, based on the different audiences participating in these channels. AuSAE has (as at April 2015) 1,184 Twitter followers, 149 likes on our Facebook page, 154 followers on LinkedIn and 162 members on the AuSAE LinkedIn Group. Website Relaunched in May 2014, the AuSAE website serves various purposes to our audience. It is the organisations face, illustrating who we are and what we do to. It is a hub for members to access content and resources only available to current financial members. It serves as place where current news, events and job/career information is hosted and displayed for visitors to access. Potential members can access more information about AUSAE membership and join and pay through the website portal. AUSTRALASIAN SOCIETY OF ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVES ANNUAL UPDATE 2014-2015 9
  • 11. Networking Lunch Series AuSAE’s Networking Lunch series continues in 2015 following two strong years. This series has proven valuable for member prospecting, current member satisfaction and is also an Annual Partner benefit offering the opportunity for our partners to meet not-for-profit professionals. Workshop Series AuSAE workshops run in 2014 were well received, high income providers for the society and resulted in a number of new members joining to access the highly discounted member registration rates. Many of the topics planned were requested by members and there is a need for practical education in key areas. This is a great way to provide training that enables members to achieve tangible operational outcomes. Executive Briefings AuSAE Briefings were introduced in 2014 to better serve our members need for discussion based session and peer to peer professional development. Several briefing series were also run to service AuSAE’s annual partners who had educational content to share, in turn benefiting the members who attended. Executive Circles In 2015 AuSAE members have volunteered to run monthly member gatherings in Auckland, Wellington, Hobart and Brisbane. This event type involves a minimal staff commitment, no funding and our members are responding favourably to the event type with numbers growing month to month. 2014 AuSAE Face to Face Events by Location Brisbane 12 Hobart 9 Perth 6 Rotorua 2 Auckland 3 Wellington 7 Sydney 11 Melbourne 10 Canberra 6Adelaide 7 AUSTRALASIAN SOCIETY OF ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVES ANNUAL UPDATE 2014-2015 10
  • 12. Associations Matter Study Survey Matters conducted a research project last year into professional associations and AuSAE took part. AuSAE obtained the results specific to our organisation which were benchmarked against the other participating professional associations. It was pleasing to see AuSAE had improved significantly from the previous time of participating two years ago. Following include some of the survey results highlights. • 86% of members are satisfied with AuSAE’s performance in keeping them up to date with information and development in the profession. This is an important function of associations with 97% of members rating this function as important or critical. • 80% of members agree they are treated as a valued member of the association. • Finally, 87% of members are satisfied or extremely satisfied with their membership. This compares to 73% in the Study overall. Survey Matters have embarked on a unique series of research programs to deliver association’s benchmark data about the opinions, preferences and motivations of their members. This research is the first of its kind in Australasia to seek feedback from members across the entire association and non-profit sector, and AuSAE is proud to be part of these landmark studies. Leadership Symposiums In 2014, our Leadership Symposiums in Sydney, Australia and Rotorua, New Zealand continued to provide members and the wider AuSAE community with the opportunity to learn from and network with other leaders in the not-for-profit sector. Both events in 2014 were highly successful at increasing membership, providing educational and networking opportunities for members, as well as providing value for our annual and event partners. Delegate feedback was overwhelming positive with the majority of respondents rating the range of topics, content relevance, venue/location, networking opportunities and value for money as good or excellent (see figures below). In 2015 the Australian event has been re-branded to the AuSAE Conference and Exhibition (ACE). After significant feedback from members it was decided to run the event in June and add an exhibition component. Membership Membership of AuSAE has grown steadily in this turnaround phase. AuSAE membership is concentrated in the Industry Association/Trade Body and Professional Association sector with a strong showing for public benefit entities (such as charities and social service organisations). These three segments are all currently growing strongly. AUSTRALASIAN SOCIETY OF ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVES ANNUAL UPDATE 2014-2015 11
