MAVERICK SCHOLARS
Meet freshman students who share
your major or area of interest through
a Maverick Scholars Freshman Interest
Group.You’llsharecommonclassschedules,
participate in co-curricular programming,
and develop lasting friendships and leadershipskills–maybe
evenaresidencehallroom–whileachieving academic
success. Students encourage each other to succeed as they
share experiences both in and out of the classroom.
ONEBOOK
Share an intellectual experience with other
freshmen as you read and discuss a chosen
book in your first-semester English class.
Faculty, departments and student groups
sponsor events that complement the program. The result
is an exchange of ideas and insights that crosses academic
disciplines and embraces different perspectives. A theme
taken from the book serves as an anchor for a broad array
of events that are open to the entire community.

Transitioning from high school to college
means understanding new expectations.
Your First-Year Seminar is designed to help
take your study and critical-thinking skills
to the college-level while also exploring
career and research opportunities within your major.
The first step to success is learning effective academic
self-management, and our team of faculty, students, and
advisors will ensure you have the tools you need to succeed.
GRADUATION IN 4
It’s never too early to start thinking about
graduation. In fact, the sooner you start
planning, the better your chances are for
graduating on time and in good academic
standing. To learn more, University College offers an
online guide to graduation, which offers helpful tips and
tools you can use from your freshman to senior year to
help make your goals a reality. It includes information on
academic advising and developing a graduation plan.

Your strengths and interests are uniquely your own. But we’re here to
help you to define them and understand how they can shape your
future. You’ll achieve a level of personal growth beyond what you ever

ACADEMIC ADVISING
You’ll receive personal attention from
an incredible team of academic advisors
who will help you create a personal plan
of discovery and transform your interests,
goals and talents into a plan that’s right
you. They’re also a great resource for helping you stay on
track for graduation in four years and exploring ways to
make the most of your college experience—both in and out
of the classroom.
MAJOR EXPLORATION
Choosing a major can be one of the most
challenging and important decisions in a
student’s life. That’s why we offer a variety
of resources, advice and classes that allow
you to explore the options available to
you and help you make the choice that is right for you.
There are many things to take into account such as your
strengths, skills and interests. But don’t worry; you’ll have
plenty of time to find the right fit for your future.
MCNAIR SCHOLARS PROGRAM
If you think you might enjoy research,
check out the McNair Scholars Program.
This federally funded program offers
eligible undergraduates opportunities
to prepare for graduate study leading
to the Ph.D. and careers in research and teaching at the
university level. Scholars participate in workshops, GRE
prep courses, a summer of mentored research, and travel to
conferences and prospective graduate programs.
TESTING SERVICES
Uncover your potential through Testing
Services. Our programs measure your
knowledge and skills, promote learning
and performance and support your
education. We offer standardized tests for
admissions and tests to determine your skill level in math,
English, computers and foreign languages. We’ll also help
you receive credit-by-exam for the AP, SAT II and IB tests
you took in high school.
TUTORING
College courses can be challenging, and
sometimes you may need a little extra help.
University College’s Cost-Share Tutorial
offers one-on-one tutoring with a certified
tutor in selected 1000-3000 level courses.
The cost is $6.50 an hour for all UT Arlington students.
Successful students know when to ask for assistance, and
our tutors are available to help with one troublesome
concept or with course material over an entire semester.
SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION
We know that a little extra review can
sometimes make a difficult course more
manageable. Supplemental Instruction
provides weekly review sessions to
help students succeed in traditionally
challenging courses. Supplemental Instruction sections,
led by peer leaders, can help you better understand course
material, effectively review for exams and develop learning
strategies that will help you achieve your academic goals.

We realize that everyone learns at their own pace, but in college, life
gets pretty hectic. It’s our mission to help you work smarter and
more efficiently during your time at UT Arlington. Together we can create a
plan to efficiently maximize your strengths, recognize your talents and help
you reach your goals.
STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES
Student Support Services provides free
academic support to U.S. citizens or
permanent residents who are either first
generation, low-income, and/or disabled.
Free services include tutoring, counseling,
advising, a private computer lab, seminars, cultural
events, and a laptop, calculator, and textbook lending
program. The goal of the program is to improve academic
performance, increase retention and graduation rates and
foster an environment that supports students.
COUNSELING SERVICES
Counseling Services is committed to
helping students meet their full potential.
We are available to help students increase
their understanding of personal issues
and make positive changes in their lives.
We provide individual, group, and couples counseling
for currently enrolled students. Workshops are provided
to address concerns including stress management,
relationships, career assessment, and strategies for
managing the college experience.
