1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The dawning of a new phenomenon called Global Warming has
caught many prominent authorities throughout the world
completely off guard. Each country has its own approach to the
handling of the situation to the extent that they converge on a
particular venue at regular intervals to discuss their strategies
and convince others to follow suit. These meetings are attended
by delegates who choose to do so, at different locations, such as
Kyoto, Copenhagen and Durban to convince others to share in
the concern of Global deterioration.

This concern stems from the discovery of the deleterious effect
that Greenhouse gases have on the atmosphere. Some countries
agree while others are less concerned stating that this is false
conjecture, mere speculation, and refuse to be a part of the
global movement to inhibit these Greenhouse gases. A part of
every agenda discussed by these delegates is devoted to
convincing others to join in this movement. But ultimately the
common objective is to combat the liberation of Carbon Dioxide,
Methane gas and Nitrous Oxide gases into the atmosphere.

It has been established that the major culprits that produce
these gases are the large coal powered Power Stations
throughout the world as well as other industries exuding gas
from their manufacturing processes. But finally a worthless
nuisance referred to as landfills, or rubbish dumps, give rise to
decaying, decomposing biodegradeable products liberating
carbon dioxide , methane gas and a number of other less
significant gases. Although they are many, and widespread, if all
these landfill gases could be harnessed then it would make a
significant effect on the universal gas emissions. This is the
premise on which this presentation is based, to attempt to
control the gaseous emissions of landfills, and to put them to
good use.

The private sector has little say on the power generation
required for industry and domestic use since this is determined
by the governments of the day. But private entrepreneurs may
have an influence on government to make good use of landfills
particularly so to , not only put to good use the waste deposited
there , but in so doing also inhibiting the uncontrolled liberation
of greenhouse gases.

This presentation has been compiled to indicate how 3 major
problems facing the country can be overcome by converting ,
WASTE into POWER, or alternatively WASTE into FUEL while
creating EMPLOYMENT for unskilled labourers who are usually
the poorest of the poor.
