How New Media Enhanced My Evaluation, Research, Creation and Planning
1. Evaluation - How did you use new
media technologies in the
construction, research and planning
and evaluation stages?
By Campbell Barlow
2. Evaluation
To evaluate our trailer both Aaran and I posted our trailer on our Facebook walls in hope for feedback. We
wanted feedback so that we could receive some outside feedback on our trailer. Previously we only had
feedback from ourselves, teachers and media colleagues that were working in the same area as us. Facebook is
a site based upon web 2.0. Web 2.0 is a website where the content is editable, anyone can upload their
information. Such sites include Youtube, Facebook, Twitter and even Wikipedia. These types of sites gave us
the room to look for reviewers to evaluate our trailer and give us some feedback. I posted our trailer upon
Facebook first and received around 12 comments from different people. I also posted the trailer on youtube
however no one has commented on it with any feedback, however this is expected as the kind of people
watching the video will feel no reason to leave any feedback.
Without sources such as Facebook, Aaran and I would have received no significant amount of feedback. We
both used Facebook and Youtube to get feedback. This feedback was then used to evaluate the final trailer that
we created.
I also used forms of new technologies such as Prezi, audio recorded by myself and what I am currently using to
answer this question, slideshare. I am using these technologies to assist me in evaluating the whole of my
trailer, magazine and poster.
3. Creation
I have used many different types of technologies to create my magazine, trailer and poster. I used software
such as Adobe Photoshop Cs6, Audacity and Final Cut Pro. New technology has allowed me to create a very
professional promotional package. Photoshop is a software that I am very comfortable with using due to long
experiences using it for both work and as a hobby. Photoshop is the top of the range for what it does. It is also
very easy to use. I used this software for the poster and the magazine. Importing my own fonts, images and
other features is very easy to do and can help me create a much more professional poster and magazine, and I
believe that I did.
Final cut pro is also a very good software to use for editing clips. It is the form of software that both Aaran and I
used to edit our trailer. The only problem with Final cut pro is the time it takes to become fully aware of the
different tools that final cut pro offers you to use. Final cut pro provided me and Aaran with tools that aren’t
available on different editing software that we initially considered such as iMovie. An example of this is the tool
we used to make it appear as though there were 6 zombies on the hill around Incubus when there were in fact
3 of us. Aaran and I filmed two different scenes, one on either side of Incubus. We wanted 6 zombies to appear
in the scene even though only three of us were actually on set being filmed (4 including Incubus). To do this we
filmed two scenes and used a tool in Final Cut Pro to stitch the scenes together.
We used Audacity to edit sound levels and to create the sound of the whispers a couple of scenes into the
trailer. Audacity is a nice piece of software, however many substitutes are available and could have been used.
I used different types of technologies to assist me in the creation of my promotional package. Without
them, making the three aspects of the package would be a huge challenge. Paper and pencil could be used for
the magazine and poster however this is not a efficient substitute and would only be used as a last resort. New
technology made the creation a lot easier that it would have been otherwise.
4. Research And Planning
I used Mozilla Firefox for a huge amount of my research and planning. I researched a lot of the narratives for
films including Todorov and Vladimir Propp. Without the internet I wouldn’t have been able to research in
depth into the different types of narratives. Firefox also came in useful for researching into magazines, posters
and trailers. Doing this assisted me in creating a professional promotional package. I used the internet to look
for design ideas and look at the types of conventions that I wanted to follow for my own products.
Firefox brought me to another piece of technology that I used. Blogger. Blogger has been key to planning my
trailer, magazine and poster. It has allowed me to keep all my plans, scripts and mock ups in one place. This has
made it much easier for me to develop a good promotional package efficiently.
I also used the internet for images that I edited and used such as barcodes, film covers and QR codes. The
internet also provided me with all the fonts that I used. Without the internet I would have been stuck with
microsoft fonts that offer no real value and would likely challenge the conventions of the promotional package.
I used the technology Photoshop to plan out some mock-ups for both my magazine and poster. Photoshop is
perfect for such mock-ups as it is very easy to use and then upload the image to blogger.
5. Conclusion
I conclude on this question by saying that new technologies have allowed me to optimize my
skills and create a high standard of trailer, poster and magazine. Without the synergy between
sources such as the internet and photoshop the standard of my promotional package would have
been no where near what it actually is. If the new technology wasn’t available, then I would have
to change absolutely everything about my package to compensate.
