This document outlines a lesson plan for a 10th grade U.S. history class. It details a project where students will write a research paper and create a PowerPoint presentation on an individual with a "neglected voice" in history. It provides time periods and topics students can focus on. It also includes a demonstration on effective Wikipedia research and how to differentiate it from primary and secondary sources. Students then have time for independent research before reconvening to discuss their findings.
3. Project Details – Part 1
• Research Paper
–Write a 4-6 page biographical paper
• Primary and Secondary Sources Needed
– Choose an individual with a “neglected”
voice in U.S. history [that means no
presidents]
– Paper needs to answer these questions:
• What was life like for this individual? What
were their daily struggles? Did this
individual affect major change? How does
this personal knowledge influence our
ideas about this time period?
4. Project Details – Part 2
• Instagram PowerPoint Presentation
– 10 slide presentation (will use provided
template)
– Presentation will chronicle your individual’s
life [you will choose how best to do this]
– Must include a description and three
comments from relevant
individuals/organizations
– Will use images from provided websites
– Citation required (even for copyright free
images)
6. Time Periods
• Chapter 13: Settling the West, 1865–1900
• Chapter 14: Industrialization, 1865–1901
• Chapter 15: Urban America, 1865–1896
• Chapter 16: Politics and Reform, 1877–1896
• Chapter 17: Becoming a World Power, 1872–1912
• Chapter 18: The Progressive Movement, 1890–1919
• Chapter 19: World War I and Its Aftermath, 1914–
1920
• Chapter 20: The Jazz Age, 1921–1929
• Chapter 21: Normalcy and Good Times, 1921–1929
• Chapter 22: The Great Depression Begins, 1929–
1932
9. Reasons to Use
• Wikipedia is great for basic
general knowledge
–Overview with subtopics
–Important terms and phrases
–Information is verified with external
resources
–Additional information associated
with articles, including videos,
audio, photographs, literature,
notes, etc.
11. Reasons to NOT Use
• Do not cite general encyclopedia
• Content is user produced and edited
–Anyone can add, modify, or delete
content*
• Page content is not static*
*Will explain in demonstration
12. Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia’s
founder:
“It is pretty good, but you
have to be careful with
it…It’s good enough
knowledge, depending on
what your purpose is”
(Young, "Wired Campus Wikipedia Founder

Comments").
17. Conclusion
• Quick introduction to project
• Brainstormed topic ideas
• Demonstration on how to search
effectively on Wikipedia
• Independent search activity
• Regroup

Editor's Notes
Good evening everyone! My name is Ms. Barker and for those who don’t know me I am one of the school librarians for the Barrington High School.
For this unit, I am going to be collaborating with Mr. Pickford to assist you with your research project.
And today, we are going to be discussing the first step of that process, which is brainstorming a topic idea.
Before we begin, I would like to run through an outline of lesson today
First, I will quickly go over your project again with you.
Next, I would like to do a quick activity to gauge what you are currently thinking about for topic ideas.
Then, I will be demonstrating an effective search technique.
Next, you will be conducting your own independent searches, in which during that time you will be finishing the post-search activity
Lastly, we will wrap up
I know that Mr. Pickford has gone over this with you a few times now, but I wanted to pop up the project details just to get us thinking about potential topics.
When you are picking your individuals you want to choose someone that interests you. I can no stress this enough, because not only are you writing a personal paper
But you are also giving a presentation through photographs and artwork etc. that are relevant this person’s life
So choose someone you love now, or think that you will go to love
So now we are going to complete
Posted example …
- Just as a reminder these are the relevant time periods
So where would you start your research process?
- You are probably asking but why Wikipedia? I’ve been told by all my teachers that I cannot use Wikipedia. And your teachers are right, you can’t use wikipedia in a paper as a cited source.
Instead
Overview with subtopics allows you to be made aware of major events, people, concepts that will help you build a mental map
Provides you with search terms that we can then use in the library catalog and electronic databases to search more precisely for information
All claims on Wikipedia need to be back up with origin information – this is a great way to find original sources – of course you then need to check these resources for credibility
Allows you a general insight into various topics
Over all, Wikipedia is a great resource for brainstorming
But we do not use it as a source for a research paper
Why?
Why don’t we
First off, as 10th graders you are not allowed to cite encyclopedias in your papers anymore, and since Wikipedia is an encyclopedia you cannot use it
Secondly, the content is user produced and edited, that means it is no peer-reviewed by individuals who you know their credentials, unlike if a URI professor wrote an article for a World Book
While Wikipedia is good at spotting vandalism it still occurs
People editing can try to use Wikipedia as a soap-box for advertisement and/or bias
Page are updated daily and that means that information is not constant
And just to re-affirm this belief that Wikipedia should not be used as a citation
So our purpose for using Wikipedia is to…
Brainstorm! B/C Wikipedia is a stepping stone and from there you will conduct your research inquiry
So to do this, I am going to be doing a demonstration of basic search techniques
I am going to be using topic ideas that you presented in the padlet
So just like I demonstrated with searching, I want you to now search your idea listed above in the padlet. Please write out the steps I have shown in this example.
I am going to give you all five minutes. If we all seem to complete this early we can move onto our discussion.
