Bảo Ninh
This week we were honoured and delighted to host a visit by
Bảo Ninh , renowned author of The Sorrow of War, Nỗi buồn
chiến tranh. This book is studied by our students and Bảo Ninh
discussed his experiences and answered ques ons in an
in mate two hour discussion. This was a rare public
appearance by the author and we are grateful to Mr. Will
Church, English Teacher, for his resourcefulness and ini a ve
in making this happen.

Every Thursday a group of students travel to Nguyen Hien Primary School as part of the Teaching English
Club. The aim of this club is to help Vietnamese children from the ages of 5 to 11 to learn English. We do
this by teaching them the basics. For example types of food, colours, animals and different rooms in the
house depending on what age they are. Most of the sessions are spoken in English. Some mes however
it has to be translated so that the children fully understand what has to be done.
We make all the resources ourselves, such as flashcards or matching games to ensure the lessons are fun
and exci ng for the kids. They are very competent in their speaking and always want to take part in the
ac vi es that we plan for them. At the end of the session we like to sing a song which some mes relates
to what we are teaching them in order to let them have fun and to also see how the words or phrases
they learn are used in real life.
I love seeing the difference we can make to a child’s day even if it’s just teaching them one word which
they can then use or even teach others. I thoroughly look forward to visi ng the school every week and I
would definitely say it is one of the highlights of my week.

Promo ng Shark Conserva on within school through the Sharks in Peril campaign was an amazing
experience for all of us. All group members put an amazing amount of me and effort to make our
campaign day possible and we all learnt much about sharks. We especially put effort into advoca ng the
importance of sharks to marine ecosystems and their economic value to local communi es as part of
eco‐tourism. On campaign day, which was held on the 25th of November, we sold shark shaped cookies
as well as Project Aware keychains and also organised ac vi es such as sponging a teacher, a quiz about
sharks and a pin the fin on the shark game. We organised these ac vi es to not only raise funds for
Project Aware, but to also raise awareness about the need for Shark conserva on. Our campaign was a
tremendous success as we raised a grand total of 16.82 million VND to donate to Project Aware. We
would like to note the PTG for their generous dona on towards our project and all the people who made
our project possible. Shark finning remains a grave issue all over the world and shark popula ons are
declining rapidly. We can all contribute towards shark conserva on by not ea ng shark based products
and not ea ng at restaurants that serve shark recipes. We have made a video about to shed light on the
reality of shark finning. Please take the me to watch this video as even though our campaign has ended,
our desire to save sharks remains forever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8smzMajfXqI
