BBB Is Warning Companies To Step Up Cybersecurity
The recent cyberattacks on Brazil-based JBS meats and
Colonial Pipeline have alerted many to the frightening
reality that, it’s not a matter of if your business will be
a target, it’s a matter of when. Businesses should no
longer see cyberattacks as just stolen data; the scope of
recent attacks has shown them to be a severe disruption
to the operation of your business, your customers and
employees safety, and even derail infrastructure our
country depends on every day. A single data breach in the United States can cost a
company over $8 million and expose employees’ and clients’ personal information,
hurting the brand itself and the people behind it. It’s important to act now and
take steps to secure your business against cybersecurity breaches. Act now to
safeguard your business by following these tips:
1. Backup your data
Over 90% of companies claim to secure their information through backups. However, out of
this number, only 28% perform weekly data back-ups, according to Acronis.The simple task
of securing your files on either a virtual database, like cloud storage, or a physical database,
like a USB drive, will grant you access to your information in cases of cyber threats, as well as
accidental deletions and power outages.
2. Install security software
According to Tessian, 88% of cybersecurity breaches are the result of human error. In other
words, most cyberattacks take place because of the unintentional actions of employees, such
as clicking on malware or using a vulnerable password. Downloading security software can
help prevent these mistakes from occurring. In addition, businesses can set up email spam
filters and encourage employees to use complex and unique passwords across multiple sites.
3. Use encryption and MFA
Encryption is a technique that encodes information, making it impossible for hackers or
anyone outside of your workplace to consume your data. Businesses should take advantage
of multi-factor authentication (MFA) to prevent cybersecurity breaches in the first place. MFA
requires extra information, such as a unique code sent to a mobile device, to protect against
hackers.
4. Protect against internal threats
Verizon claims that 30% of data breaches come from internal actors. Prevent internal
breaches by outlining strict computer policies (forbid employees from bypassing firewalls),
installing IDS (intrusion detection systems), and changing passwords frequently (and
especially when employees leave).
5. Create an incident response plan
An incident response plan (IRP) is a set of instructions designed to help recognize, address,
and recover from network security threats as soon as it happens. In short, an IRP calls for
creating a list of responsibilities for team members, summarizing technologies that the team
should use, and detailing a data recovery process.

Our 2021 Celebration of Intergrity
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, BBB Serving Greater Cleveland once
again made the decision to conduct our 2021 Celebration of Integrity virtually.
We are committed to working in the best interests of our attendees, employees,
and fellow Northeast Ohioans. We plan to have our next Celebration of Integrity
on April 14, 2022 at Stillwater Place in Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Though
we weren’t able to celebrate in person, we were happy to still present this
year’s students with their scholarships. You can watch our virtual Celebration
of Integrity, Students of Integrity winners, and Spark finalists on our YouTube

BBB’s 2021 Student of Integrity Scholarship Winners
Catherine Becker is a senior at iSTEM Early College High
School in Painesville. Catherine’s guidance counselor said,
“when you look at how Catherine spends her free time, these
passions—for people, the environment, and animals—are quite
apparent. Catherine doesn’t just ‘talk the talk,’ she ‘walks the
walk.’” Catherine’s love of the sciences led her to take rigorous
coursework in classes like microscopy environmental science
and she hopes to follow her dream of becoming a vet. Catherine
is equally as busy in her free time, where she is captain of her Varsity soccer team, co-
founder of her school’s Gay-Straight Alliance, and the historian for both the National
Technical Honors Society and SkillsUSA. Catherine is also heavily involved in mission
and other advocacy work, including trips to help victims of the opioid crisis and their
families in West Virginia and hosting meals with NextStep, a program that provides
housing and services to those who age out of foster care.
Devin Headrick is a senior at Lutheran West High School in
Rocky River. His guidance counselor said that Devin “is one of the
most genuine, kind, and selfless students that I have had.” Devin
is involved in a host of leadership positions and extracurriculars,
including two-time president and two-time vice president of
Lutheran West’s Student Council, vice president and three year
member of the National Honors Society, and member of the
Senney Honors Academy. Devin was also voted as Lutheran West’s
Homecoming King in 2020, something his guidance counselor
believes “represents how kind and inclusive he is to all students.”
Benjamin Mullin-Vanneste is a senior at Campus International
High School in Cleveland. His guidance counselor said that Ben
“strives to show respect to everyone, advocates for those who
may be undervalued, and promotes awareness around important
issues.” Ben is an accomplished student and involved in many
extracurriculars and leadership activities both in and outside
of school. He is a 3 year varsity basketball player and two-time
captain, as well as voted Most Valued and Most Improved player of
his team. Ben’s accomplishments extend to his academics, as he is
enrolled in the rigorous International Baccalaureate program, is his class Valedictorian,
and a dedicated College Credit Plus student at Cleveland State University.
Ria Raj is a senior at Laurel School in Shaker Heights. In her essay,
Ria discussed the importance of unity in a fragmented world and
how it inspires much of what she does: “I am firm in my belief that
we must look beyond hateful labels and accusations, and work
towards justice.” Ria is ranked as one of the top 12 debaters in the
U.S. and joined 12 other students on Team USA’s National Speech
and Debate to represent the U.S. on a global stage. Ria is involved
in diverse extracurriculars and leadership
opportunities at school, including:
Editor of the Laurel Political Review, Senior class
secretary, student leader on Laurel’s Anti-
Racist Task Force, a member
of Laurel’s Model UN’s
Leadership Board, and more.

On Our Radar
A Berea man reported to
BBB that he and his elderly mother
were targeted by a deceptive sealcoating
business. He told BBB that International Roofing
and Blacktopping knocked
on their door on May 19th. A group of
men in a black Chevrolet truck with temporary Ohio
tags and “Internationa (sic) Roofing and Blacktopping” signage
told his mother that her driveway looked like it needed to be sealed and offered to
do it for $500. The consumer paid $420 in cash upfront and the workers started the
job. Shortly after they started, the workers increased the price to $1300 because
they claimed the driveway was in worse shape than they thought. The company, with
reportedly “20 years of experience,” attempted to renegotiate the price from $1,300 to
$1,000, then to $750 and finally just left the worksite. The consumers called the police
and Better Business Bureau. International Roofing and Blacktopping falsely claims to
be BBB Accredited, its email address is invalid, and attempts to call the company’s
1-800 number have all gone straight to a “user busy” message.

David Schabel serves as Vice President at SchabelTech, which provides engineered materials to
commercial contractors and industrial manufacturers worldwide. In this role, David is responsible for
managing customers’ experiences and expanding product and service offerings across SchabelTech’s
various brands. An alumnus of Miami University, David brings many years of experience in logistics
consulting to his business and our board. In his free time, David enjoys traveling with his wife, spending
time with their two kids, and hosting trivia.
Tondi Allen is the Director of Masstechism Inc., a company that helps small to medium size business
markets with eCommerce solutions and tech consulting. Prior to starting Masstechism with her
husband, Tondi worked as a tech coach and project manager in various industries. She has served as
Chairperson of the Board of Directors for Resourceful Nonprofits and Executive Director of Minority
Tech Alliance. In her free time, Tondi enjoys growing and making teas and herbs and coaching youth in
computer programming.
Tory D. Coats is CEO of Teen Enterprise, a youth organization created to empower disadvantaged
youth by providing experiential learning opportunities and resources for teens in the development of
entrepreneurial skills. A self described “serial entrepreneur,” Tory was the Grand Champion of the 2018
Cleveland Leadership Center’s CivicIntubation Pitch Competition. In addition to his years of educational
consulting and entrepreneurship, Tory is also the Director of Career Readiness at the Boys & Girls Club
of Cleveland. In his free time, Tory enjoys running and weight training.
