Don’t Let Scammers Steal Your
Company’s Google Business Profile
A new scam is targeting company Google Business
Profiles. Though claiming your Google Profile is not
required for your business, it does offer benefits by letting
you take control of your business profile, manage your
Google Reviews and Google Maps, edit your profile, and
update business information, such as address, phone
number, and operating hours.
In this new scheme, scammers click the “Own this business?” link (typically in the
right sidebar after searching for your business in Google), which sends a request
email to the current owner. If you or someone in your company approves this
request, thinking it is legitimate, the scammer can take over your profile. They will
likely change the name of your business and lock you out of the account.
Scammers then use this new business profile, with all of your reviews, to fool
consumers into contacting them. If your business profile is stolen, you’ll need to
go through a process with Google support to reclaim your profile. In the meantime,
your profile may have received bad reviews or been altered by scammers.
This scam can seriously affect a business’s reputation. Watch out for scammers
trying to steal your Google Business Profile by following these tips:
• Reject suspicious ownership requests. Stop scammers in their tracks by
rejecting unauthorized attempts to claim your business profile immediately. If
you aren’t sure if a member of your staff is behind the request, find out before
you accept it.
• Check your email and any alerts you receive from Google in a timely fashion.
Scammers are counting on you not noticing strange activity on your profile.
When initially verifying your account, be sure to use an email that you check
regularly.
• Contact Google support if your account gets hijacked. Regain control of your
stolen account through Google’s support team.
• Always report fraudulent activity. Report any problems to Google immediately.

Top Scams to
Avoid in 2022
Better Business Bureau Serving Greater
Cleveland has released its Top Ten Scams of
2021. The list was compiled on reports submitted to
BBB Scam TrackerSM
by local consumers. While COVID-19 related
scams did not make the top 10 list this year, the influences of the pandemic
affected the proliferation and types of scams BBB saw in 2021. Reports citing Identity
Theft (#9) increased dramatically from last year primarily due to unemployment fraud during the last tax season.
Scammers took advantage of increased unemployment due to COVID-19 closures and job losses to collect benefits in
the names of unsuspecting victims.
Phishing and Online Purchase Scams took the first and second spots on BBB’s 2021 list. Not surprising considering
the spike in online shopping, supply chain and labor shortages, and the growth of social media advertising. Scammers
have taken advantage of these factors to launch phishing scams and deceptive websites. BBB especially saw this with
the continued reporting of scammers posing as Amazon and Apple representatives in phishing attempts.
Government Agency Imposters (#4), Tech Support (#5), and Sweepstakes, Lottery
& Prizes (#3) have remained steady from their position in 2020. Debt Collection (#7)
scams have increased 2 slots from their 2020 position while reports of Employment
Scams (#8) fell from the number 6 position in the previous year. Fake Check / Money
Order (#10) scams usually also accompany an increased volume of employment scam
reports since scammers will pass off bad checks to “pay” their victims for fake car wrap
or mystery shopping gigs. If you or your business comes across a scam, report it to
BBB Scam TrackerSM
. Your report can help stop others from becoming a victim of a
scam.
New Tax Laws May Impact Business Owners
Do you accept payments from customers through third-party payment or mobile apps
such as Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, and Cash App? Starting January 1st, the IRS announced if
your business accrues more than $600 annually in commercial payments through said
apps, your business will be sent a tax form (Form 1099-K) showing the income you received
to report this as taxable income.
You do not need to report nontaxable income including:
• Money in the form of reimbursement friends/family
• Money received as a gift from friends/family
• Money received from a roommate for rent/utilities
Keep your business up to date on the latest tax scams and tips at BBB.org/taxtips.
