CC BY-SA-NC

Organisational Design
Along with the passage of time many things has changed and developed in the
design of organisation. The modern organisational design has three
types:Horizontal Organization, Network Design, Virtual Organisation
Horizontal Organisations
▪ Horizontal designs replace the traditional vertical, hierarchical organisation.
▪ Advanced information technology and globalization suggests the use of
horizontal structure.
▪ Horizontal structure facilitates cooperation, teamwork, and customer.
CC BY-SA-NC
Some guiding principle developed by Frank Ostroff, a McKinsey & Company
consultant, along with colleague Douglas Smith
 Organization revolve around the process, not the task.
 The hierarchy is flattened.
 Teams are used to manage everything.
 Customers drive performance.
 Team performance is rewarded.
 Supplier and customer contact is maximised.
All employees need to be fully informed and trained.
CC BY-SA-NC
Network Design
▪ The network designs go beyond even horizontal structures and totally
abandon the classical, hierarchical, functional structure of organization.
▪ Network design involves a unique combination of strategy, it is highly
flexible, and controlled by market mechanism.
▪ It more focuses on commitment, achieve team goals and a sense of
identification ( e.g. It’s my company)
CC BY-SA-NC
Virtual Organization
▪ The term virtual organisation has emerged not so much because it describes
something distinct from network organisation but because the term itself
represents the new Information age.
▪Interestingly the word ‘virtual’ used here did not come from virtual reality but
from virtual memory .
▪ It requires a strong information technology platform. It is a temporary network of
companies that come together quickly to exploit fast changing opportunities.
The core characteristics of Virtual Organisation
 Technology
 Opportunism
 No borders
 Trust
 Excellence
