Mozilla IT has been managed for a too long time by paid-staff only. We are now moving toward opening it to the community, be as open as possible. This talk will be about how we're doing it, but it is also an opportunity to gather feedback and exchange with the OSS projects that have always been working that way.

Open Source Intelligence is the art of collecting information which is scattered on publicly available sources. With evolution of social media and digital marketplaces a huge amount of information is constantly generated on the Internet (sometimes even without our conscious consent). This is of great concern for organizations and businesses as chances of confidential data floating in the public domain may seriously harm their business integrity. All recent hacks are related to internal source code disclosure, API keys leakage, known vulnerability in third party plugin, data dump leaks etc. Based on experience and robust research in this domain, for this talk the speakers have created a tool which will help all kind of organizations to monitor cyberspace effectively without much investment. This tool is simple but an effective solution which is capable of hearing digital whispers which are usually missed or ignored but shouldn’t be.

When I demo’ed what is now called Appium at the Selenium Conference in 2012 I had no idea what I was doing starting an open source project. I knew little about how open source operated and worked behind the scenes. Thanks to the help of a great community and the advice of some seasoned open source contributors, Appium has quickly become the most popular open source mobile automation framework. Along the way, mistakes were made, lessons were learned, and occasionally we got things right. I’ve put together a collection of stories and lessons that I’d like to share with others to help everyone manage, contribute to, and consume open source software projects more effectively.

How we build project for Open Source
How we build project for Open Source

Presented by: Christian Bromann, Sauce Labs Presented at All Things Open 2020 Abstract: Every open source project has its own unique story to tell, whether it’s a small personal hobby program or a big corporate-funded project. A project always starts with a single person making a single commit and putting it on GitHub. From there the storyline writes itself and, if done successfully, it will highlight the most important component of open source: the people, friendships, and collaborations. Putting code on an open platform like GitHub is easy. There is almost no friction when you iterate on your first versions of your new open source project. However once it grows and more people start using it, it often feels overwhelming when they start filing issues and requesting your support. This often leads to maintainers abandoning their projects as they get burned out and users becoming frustrated when they have to transition to a different framework. People often forget that building a community around an open source project is just as difficult and important as the solution that the project provides. In this talk, Christian Bromann will share his experience of building a community around an open source project. He will provide various tips and tricks that help guide you through the difficulties of acquiring new contributors and will teach you important lessons he learned along the way. At the end of the session you will walk away with actionable ideas that you can apply to your own open source projects.

After Seam stopped at version 3, affecting related modules like Seam Social, a number of people started to work on Agorava, a "reference implementation" for Social Network integration in Java. In this session, you will see examples from a number of frameworks that help developers to integrate their projects with existing Social Networks, both Public (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Xing, Yammer,...) and Corporate, e.g. within the Enterprise or Institution (University, Hospital, Library, Museum or individual Artists...) It also aims to assist Java Enterprise technologies and frameworks by adding social media features to web sites or services developed using Java or running on a JVM. Agorava is intended to be part of JDF 2.next alongside full DeltaSpike support or PicketLink SSO and more, e.g. JSR 330, allowing Agorava to also run on Android or Java SE.

In the last few years open source has transformed the software industry. From Android to Wikipedia, open source is everywhere, but how does one succeed in it? While open source projects come in all shapes and sizes and all forms of governance, no matter what kind of project you’re a part of, there are a set of fundamentals that lead to success. I’d like to share some of the lessons I’ve learned from running two of the largest commercial open source projects, Docker and MongoDB, as well as some very successful community projects. This presentation was delievered at sinfo.org in Feb 2015.

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation does much more than hold FOSS4G each year. This talk will look into what makes OSGeo a software foundation. What software foundations have to offer members, software projects and developers. This talk is structured around the “incubation” process by which new software projects join the OSGeo. If you are new to open source take this is a great chance to see how OSGeo evaluates software projects and how these checks protect you! For managers it is especially important to understand the risks associated with the use of open source. Understand what assurances OSGeo incubation offers, how to double check the results, and what factors are left for your own risk assessment. If you are a developer considering getting involved in OSGeo this is great talk to learn what is involved, how much work it will be, and how you can start! Come see what makes OSGeo more than a user group!

Agorava, the Social Framework can best be described as a "reference implementation" for Social Media integration on the Java Platform. It helps developers to integrate their apps with many Social Networks, both Public (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Xing, Yammer,...) and Corporate, e.g. within the Enterprise or Institution (University, Hospital, Library, Museum...) or by artists and other creative individuals. It also adds social media features to Java Enterprise and web sites or services developed running Java or other JVM languages. Agorava is intended to be part of JDF 2.x or similar parts of a JBoss "Social" Stack. In this session, you will learn how to use Agorava and hear about similar frameworks or approaches and where they stand at the moment.

In an enterprise, every project has a project manager regardless of the scale and of the theme. Open Source projects, which do not quite fit the traditional and formal enterprise way (rules, forms, licenses ...), cannot be exceptions. Though sharing the same name, the role of project manager is totally different for enterprise and Open Source projects. The speaker is project manager of TOMOYO Linux, a security enhancement feature which was just merged in version 2.6.30. It was developed by one of the largest SI companies in Japan. The session reviews the project history and tries to summarize the differences between the enterprise and Open Source projects using TOMOYO Linux project as an example. -- It took me more than three months to make this slides.

Historically, media representations of women have often been limited to stereotypical roles such as caregivers, homemakers, or romantic interests. Women are frequently objectified and sexualized in media portrayals, reducing them to their physical appearance and reinforcing narrow beauty standards. This can contribute to body image issues, low self-esteem, and unhealthy relationships among women and girls.Women are often underrepresented in media, particularly in leadership roles, STEM fields, and other traditionally male-dominated areas. When they are represented, they may be portrayed as exceptions or tokens rather than as fully developed characters with agency and complexity.Media representations of women often intersect with other aspects of identity such as race, ethnicity, sexuality, and disability. Intersectional analysis reveals how these intersecting identities shape women's experiences and opportunities in media portrayals. Women from marginalized groups may face additional layers of stereotypes and discrimination.Feminist scholars, activists, and media watchdogs have long critiqued the representation of women in media and advocated for more diverse, inclusive, and empowering portrayals. This includes initiatives to increase the visibility of women's voices and stories, challenge stereotypes, and promote media literacy and critical thinking among audiences.Overall, media representation of women plays a powerful role in shaping societal attitudes and perceptions. Efforts to promote more diverse, authentic, and inclusive portrayals of women are essential for challenging gender stereotypes, promoting gender equality, and fostering a more equitable and inclusive media landscape. While there have been some improvements in recent years, including the emergence of strong female characters in film, television, and literature, significant challenges remain. Women continue to face systemic barriers to equal representation and opportunities in media industries, including issues of pay equity, workplace harassment, and lack of access to decision-making roles.
