Continuing our recent theme on dental sterilizers, this week we've provided an overview of the main types of dental sterilizers. The overview also includes some of our most popular models and the features, benefits, and key stats of each.
3. 3 Main Types of Sterilizers
There are 3 main methods for sterilizing
dental instruments:
• Steam autoclaving
• Dry heat
• Chemical vapor
4. Steam autoclaves use a combination of high-pressure, steam, and
heat for a prolonged period to sterilize dental instruments.
Steam Autoclaves
5. Manual:
• Unit must be manually filled with water.
• Each phase of the cycle must be entered manually.
Automatic:
• Unit fills with water automatically.
• Each phase of the cycle is processed automatically during the cycle.

21. Dry-Heat Sterilizers
Dry-heat dental sterilizers use high temperatures for extended periods
to sterilize instruments.
Most dry-heat sterilizers produce heat and then circulate it through the
chamber in a process called mechanical convection.
22. Chemical-Vapor Sterilizers
Chemical-vapor sterilizers rely on the use of chemicals to produce a
vapor that accomplishes the sterilization. This type of sterilizer processes
instruments quickly.
However, these chemicals can be expensive, and they require the
chemical-vapor sterilizer to be placed in a well-ventilated area to avoid
the unpleasant odor from the chemicals.
24. STATIM 2000 and 5000
Top 4 STATIM Guidelines
1) Always insert the cassette right-side up.
2) Use only distilled water.
3) Never overfill the cassette.
4) Ensure that the bubble level indicator is at 3:00 or 6:00.
25. Ultraclave and Pelton & Crane
Top 4 Guidelines
1) Use only distilled water.
2) Secure the unit’s dam gasket before operating.
