2. Materials Selection Exercise
โข Congratulations- you are all now
material scientists!
โข You have been approached by a compact
disc manufacturer for assistance in
material selection.
โข They are the exclusive producers of
compact discs for official album of FIFA
2018 World Cup, and want to make sure
they choose the right polymer for an
upcoming new release album.
โข There will be a lot of unhappy fans if they
spend $15 on a compact disc and is does
not hold up to a variety of polymer
performance factors.
3. ๏ถ Strength
โข Does not break if you drop it.
๏ถ Dimensional stability
โข Does not change shape when exposed to heat.
โข Withstands exposure to other materials (diet coke, water, your lunch, etc).
๏ถ Flexible
โข Able to withstand some bending without breaking.
๏ถ Rigid
โข Withstand fast spinning inside the player.
๏ถ Mass produce
โข Easy to fabricate.

4. Info on Compact Discs
Plastic
๏ถ A compact disc (or CD) is an optical disc used for storing digital data. It was
originally invented for digital audio in 1979.
๏ถ Compact discs are made from a 1.2 mm thick disc of plastic coated with a much
thinner aluminum layer.
๏ถ Aluminum layer is protected by a film of lacquer, which can be printed with a label.
๏ถ Injection molding is used to manufacture compact discs.
5. ๏ถ Provide THREE (3) Candidate Materials for the mentioned compact
disc application.
๏ถ Choose the best polymer material for this application base on
โmaterial selection guidelines provided in the lecture note / case study,
such as polymer structure, properties, cost index, operating
temperature, environmental exposure, etc.
๏ถ The proposal must be written in the report (about 7-10 pages) and
present your work during class.
