6. Inspired by its costal location and adjacency to the U.S. Norfolk Naval Base, NEXT Student Center provides its occupants with a com-
fortable range of seating types and an atmosphere that creates a true sense of place.Throughout the center, details and architecture
make reference to the U.S. Navy, starting upon entry. When guest enter the building, above head is a suspended gypsum ceiling stylized
to represent the bow of a ship. The ceiling provides way-finding and divides the space symmetrically creating flow and order. Guests
can also find reference to the nearby naval base in the back hallway by the elevator.A custom graphic that merges images of the ocean,
ships, and naval travel paths creates interest and visually breaks up the long corridor.Warm-tone materials make the space more inviting
to occupants and breaks away from the stereotypical institutional feel. Individuals within the space are encouraged to grow, discover,
relax, work, learn, socialize, and collaborate. A variety of Steelcase furniture was chosen to fill the student center creating a diverse
assortment of zones and work settings. It is important to address the diversity needed to ensure everyone can succeed and benefit from
a space. Many people work in different ways and rely on their setting in order to thrive and accomplish their tasks and goals. Diverse
seating types and settings allow students and faculty members to choose which goal they wish to achieve and the arrangement that will
be most beneficial to their success.

12. Edouard Manet Pierre-Auguste Renoir
One hundred years before Sephora, Impressionism was at its peak in France. Light, shadow, color variety, and painterly brush strokes
defined this unique style. The powerful underlying statements in each painting spoke to gender roles that were on the brink of redefini-
tion. Individual exploration was encouraged and women were stepping out of traditional roles. It was a powerful artistic period that
shaped later movements and styles that would spread far beyond French boarders. As Sephora moves into the future, it is important to
embrace the powerful roots of its past. Harnessing the bold ground breaking quality of the traditional period and adding the chic fierce
style of today, produces “Modern Impressionism”.

California Light + Space Art:
Inspired by the innovative and alluring artistic movement of California Light and SpaceArt, this up-state NewYork residence captivates
its visitors with a unique atmosphere and experience. Derived out of minimalism, light becomes the primary element and is featured
through reflection, color, and indirect application. Secondary elements such as walls and furniture are intentionally placed and scaled
to allow light penetration and a specific array of shadows. The space itself becomes a work of art that incorporates both natural daylight
and artificial controlled light.Through out the day, different spaces of the apartment become the focal point of interest inviting occu-
pants to explore.

26. Inspired by the powerful concept of reincarnation and the cycle of an ocean wave, the design for the office space NEXT, provides its
entrepreneurs with a work environment like no other. In an atmosphere that promotes growth through collaboration, failures, persis-
tence, and discoveries, it is important for one to dig deep within themselves to help unveil their true potential. The tranquility and fluid
movement of the space encourages one to move throughout the day and experience a variety of settings. Each location holds subliminal
references to the wave-like water cycle and inspirational occurrence of reincarnation.

27. Designed to mimic the waves and fluid motion of the water, the suspended wood beam ceiling will extend throughout the open floor
plan and into the open office. Higher in places of public interaction and lower in spaced intended for privacy, the ceiling will help to
create a sense of space and evoke specific behaviors. In side rooms where the wood beam ceiling does not exist, other features will mir-
ror the wave-like water cycle. These features will provide the office space with a calm energy that encourages its inhabitants to move
throughout the space and explore.

32. Located in Jackson, Mississippi, this neonatal intensive care unit addresses concerns, issues, and challenges often faced when a child
is born prematurely. Mississippi,Alabama, and Louisiana are among the states with the highest percentage of preterm births. Region-
ally, nearly 18% of pregnancies result in premature births, where the child requires additional treatment, before leaving the hospital.
Despite the obstacles and challenges this presents, it is still important for parents and the baby to experience each other and bond, at
this crucial time.A way of implementing this concept of togetherness is by placing an article of the mothers clothing with her scent,
and a toy that plays the sound of her heartbeat, in the incubator so that her presence can be felt, even at the times of her absence. It is
also important for the family to be able to experience the baby, even at times when they may not be physically present. Having video
surveillance of the incubator through their mobile devices, allows for them to see their child at any time. Families will also have access
to their child’s nurse’s log on and off-site.Password-accessed information allows them to stay up to date and feel involved in their child’s
care.Through mobile devices or an iPad, connected to the tv in the family room, families can read the log and follow links explaining
all procedures and equipment used. This educational system gives families a sense of control, calms their nerves, and provides a way
around having to interrupt hospital staff, to ask basic questions. Sterile environments are also crucial in order to protect the infant’s
health. Given the stress of the situation, rooms introduce the warmth and comfort of “home” while using materials that are lowVOC
and can be easily sanitized by family and hospital staff.

34. Inspiration was drawn from the locality in which the healthcare facility is placed.Mississippi’s state flower and bird are the magnolia and
the mockingbird. Magnolias have an extensive list of symbolism including purity, perfection, youth, innocence, joy, health, and good
fortune, all of which are relevant to wishing the best for a new baby.As well, the mockingbird can symbolize joyfulness, playfulness,
protection, and security. With these ideas in mind, the designed space captures the same aspects and introduces the element of sustain-
ability. The materials chosen are low-to-zeroVOC and multiple meet Greenguard certification standards. Given the warm climate of
the southeast, window treatments block the sun in order to decrease solar heating and allow for easier indoor temperature control.
Each patient room is a temporary home where the tiny infant can be protected and gain strength alongside his or her parents and where
the joys of having a new addition to the family can still be experienced.

40. Located in the Highland Region of the Appalachian Mountains, the new Sweet Springs Women and Children’s Shelter
utilizes the unique geographical location in a way that invites guests to stay, feel safe, and rebuild their lives. Mountains
have had symbolic meaning that dates back to pre-biblical times. Their tops signify closer proximity to the heavens and
a state of full consciousness. In dreams, they represent the overcoming of difficult circumstances and conquering one’s
toughest battles. It is this type of certainty and power that women escaping situations of domestic violence must experi-
ence in order to move forward and not fall victim to their past. Like the surrounding mountains, they may be worn and
tired with hard times and outside forces, but what sets them apart is their ability to stay strong, protect themselves and
their children, and refuse to crumble in the face of a tragedy. At the new Sweet Springs, interior motifs, murals, textures,
and detailing representing the mountains tried strength and serve as a reminder to guest that they possess their own
undeniable inner strength. Symbolizing such power, potential, and confidence will also encourage children to not fall
into the statistical pattern that often occurs with families exposed to domestic violence. During their visit, women and
children will be encouraged to come together, like the mountains around them, and stand as a unified front. At the new
Sweet Springs, women will share their stories and build a community focused on helping each other learn, grown, and not
fall victim to domestic violence.
