Goodfellas
I will be looking at two editing techniques within the movie goodfellas.
A scene that gives a great example of a long take and also a tracking shot with the camera
examining the entire restraint. Would be the scene in Goodfellas where Henry walks into the
restraint and one by one introduces each character to the camera breaking down the fourth
wall and directly addressing the audience. This shows fluidity in the shot making it look
smoother instead of compiling singular shots of the characters. This is a very effective
camera technique and since it is shot in a POV angle it almost feels as if we are shaking the
hands of all the various characters, and in this movie you have to know all the charachters
well because they are almost all included in the story line.
An example of cross cutting within the movie would be when jimmy and Henry are sitting in
the diner talking about how Tommy was going to be made today. One action taking place is
them sitting in the diner and then the camera cuts to show Tommy in the house about to be
made but then killed instead, the camera then cuts back to jimmy getting a phonecall and
hearing the news. This is very effective because in one scene it shows tommy dying and in the other
it shows the emotions of jimmy or a reaction shot. For me when i watched it, it felt like it was
happening at the same time, so when jimmy found out i felt as if i had gotten the same phonecall and
experienced the same emotion.
