Goodfellas: Jimmy Conway Introduction
In this introduction scene we see jimmy Conway come into the movie. The scene
starts with young Henry at the bar and walking towards the door, this is when the
camera does a panning shot of the whole bar cutting to shots of the tables full of
cards and money. Over the scene is a narrative monologue of Henry talking about
how jimmy is like and describes him as a young legend. Martin Scorsese; the
director; uses some sound effects when he edits the song to start the second jimmy
walks into the door. Other sound enhancers are used like when jimmy slips in the
money to henrys pocket; it is enhanced to hear the crinkle of the money to make it
clear what it is. The narrator says the jimmy was first put in prison for murder, he is
saying this over a freeze frame scene of jimmy’s face and yet the music is still
playing in the background. This contrasts the two emotions of anger and crime
where as the music provides a happy and joyful air. Throughout the whole scene
there is a lot of ambient noise in the bar with people in the foreground out of focus
yet shouting at card games and laughing.
