Trinity College of Engineering volunteers helped clean up after the Attukal Pongala festival with permission from the city mayor. Their tireless efforts were appreciated. Young Indians Trivandrum chapter also had their annual day celebration where a new co-chair was selected. Dr. Arun Surendran took over as the co-chair of the chapter. Yi connected to Confederation of Indian
Industries organizes several social campaigns at the national level.

The Salesman (2016)
The renowned Iranian film maker Asghar Farhadi has won his second Oscar for his gripping
drama ‘The Salesman’. Although Farhadi had refused to attend the Oscars as a protest against
Donald Trump’s immigration ban, he made a huge political statement by sending Firouz Naderi,
a former NASA scientist and Anousheh Ansari, the first self-funded woman in the world to have
made it to space, to collect his award. In his acceptance note Farhadi said that his absence was
‘out of respect’ for the people of Iran and 6 other Muslim Countries affected by the ban. There
was a special open air screening of ‘The Salesman’ Trafalgar Square in London on Sunday
before the Oscars ceremony. Farhadi’s 2012 family drama ‘A Separation’ was the first Iranian
movie to win an academy award.
‘The Salesman’ was screened at IFFK 2016 a couple of times amidst of heavy crowd. Asghar
Farhadi has got a large fan base among the cinephiles of Kerala, his popular films being ‘A
Separation’ and ‘About Elly’. I remember watching the Salesman from the front row of Ajanta
Theatre (I couldn’t get a decent seat because of the huge crowd), stretching my neck all the way.
About halfway, I got a chance to have a look at my fellow viewers. I was struck by awe that all
the eyes were glued to the screen, following the movements of the characters. This is the very
peculiarity of Farhadi’s cinema. Farhadi’s characters are not alien to us; in fact we can found his
characters everywhere. Farhadi speaks language of Iranian middle class, the tensions which they
experience in their everyday life, which is not at all alien to a ‘developing’ country, especially in
a patriarchal society. Salesman tells the story a married couple, Rana and Emad, who has
recently moved into a new apartment. They are also members of a theatre company engaged in
the production Arthur Miller’s famous play ‘Death of a Salesman’. One evening, Rana was
assaulted in the shower; the attacker disappears leaving his pick up van. Emad now seeks
revenge on the stranger revealing the tensions and fractures in his marriage. Salesman reveals the
dark side of the patriarchal society towards woman and the shear meaningless of personal
vengeance. Farhadi is a film maker who knows his limitations well, and he uses his limitations
superbly to create modem masterpieces. As in the case of ‘A Separation’ the Salesman is also a
subtle explosion, with of brilliant film making and equally supported on screen performances.
