2. Applying to Undergrad Research
Dear Dr. ________:
My name is __________and I am currently a junior at the University of Washing-
ton Bothell pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Biology. I recently attended your
research seminar, “Studying Cooperation from Another World.” The idea of
observing the evolution of cooperative mutualism between microorganisms in
itself is exciting to me. I was fascinated by the fact that your research found
that mutations in the essential porin gene and sulfate reduction genes in bacte-
ria caused greater growth and yield in the bacteria populations. I would be very
interested in exploring these questions further.
I recalled that you said you were looking for undergraduate research assis-
tants. Thus, I am writing to express an interest in applying for a research assis-
tant position. Attached is my resume outlining my qualifications and describing
my past undergraduate studies. I am happy to meet and discuss this at your
convenience.
