GMU FOCUS Missionary Shares Year of Service, Student Discipleship

Two months ago, I arrived at George
Mason University (GMU) to begin my
new life as a campus missionary with
FOCUS, the Fellowship of Catholic
University Students. I discovered a
wonderful, thriving community that has
continued to grow since August!
Approximately 1200 students attended
our annual luau at the St. Robert
Bellarmine Chapel, where our chaplain,
Fr. Peter, roasted a giant pig. Below is a
photo of our other giant pig, our
mascot for the day, “Wilbur” (aka
Perry the Senior). Since then, about 160
students have attended our weekly
Thursday Night Suppers, which feature
guest speakers like Fr. James Searby,
who spoke about living a faithful
Catholic-Christian life on campus, and
Prof. Helen Alvare, an associate law
professor right here at George Mason .

2. AYear of Service
Begins at George
Mason
Within GMU’s Catholic Campus Ministry, this
year’s theme is “Servant Leadership.” To be a
leader, one must be willing to serve even the
least of Christ’s people. We missionaries and
students keep the Scripture passage from John
13 fresh in our minds. After Jesus washes the
feet of His disciples, He tells them,“I have given
you an example, that you also should do as I
have done to you” (15). Seeking to remain
faithful to Christ’s teaching, our FOCUS team –
together with Catholic Campus Ministry – have
visited the local juvenile detention center,
baked and delivered meals to local soup
kitchens, and lead pro-life rosary walks in
honor of the unborn.
“DO AS I HAVE DONE TO
YOU” (JOHN 13: 15).
Discipleship
As a FOCUS missionary, one of my greatest
privileges is discipling/mentoring students,
which involves teaching them how to lead Bible
studies, how to maintain a consistent prayer
life, and, more broadly, how to effectively
evangelize at George Mason. One of these men
is Perry, who does double-duty as a Sociology
major and youth minister at a nearby parish.
His disciple is Sean, a sophomore Government
Affairs major, Deputy Grand Knight of our
Knights of Columbus chapter, and a guitarist
who is very excited to release an album with
his new Christian band, Set For Tomorrow.
Bible studies
Eight men are attending my freshman Bible
study! We are currently making our way
through Genesis and will ultimately conclude
with the Gospel of John. The main focus of this
study is to examine our relationship with God,
which was broken by sin and healed through
Jesus Christ. Do we understand this sacrifice?
Do we remain faithful to Christ’s call to love as
He loved? The students are very engaged and I
look forward to discussing these important
questions with them!
PERRY
“WHAT MY INVOLVEMENT WITH
FOCUS AND CATHOLIC CAMPUS
MINISTRY HAS SHOWN ME IS
THAT IT IS THROUGH A
RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST
THAT I CAN FIND MY HAPPINESS,
AND IT IS IN THAT RELATIONSHIP
THAT I FEEL I HAVE A PURPOSE.
MY LIFE WOULD NOT BE THE
SAME WITHOUT THIS MINISTRY,
AND I THANK GOD FOR IT DAILY.”
SEAN
“COMING TO COLLEGE LAST YEAR,
THE LAST THING I THOUGHT I WOULD
BE DOING WAS GOING TO CHURCH
OFTEN AND REACHING OUT TO
OTHERS ABOUT MY FAITH. YET
THROUGH CATHOLIC CAMPUS
MINISTRY (CCM) I WAS BLESSED AND
FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO GROW IN MY
FAITH AND MEET SO MANY OF THE
AWESOME PEOPLE THAT CALL CCM
HOME LIKE I DO.”
