Ivan J. Garcia
804-10-2844
RISE Program
Thoughts and Summary of Microscopy and Pipetting
During this RISE seminar we were given the opportunity to refresh our memories on microscopy and pipetting skills. We started off by a brief summary of microscopy and its origins; the different types of microscopy and their techniques. For example a combination of technique and microscopy is: Cross section (specimen cut horizontally) with bright field; yet other common types include dark field, scanning electron, U.V., longitudinal cuts and whole mounts. We discussed the different types of microscopes and their functions. After our review we were divided into groups, each group was given a small project to do during a 30-40 minute time lapse. My group had to work with paper fibers and how they were compacted. We found that if the paper was used to write or print on the fibers were more compact then those used to clean or tissue, this is done purposely so that the ink will stay in the place it was written on, and not “fall of”. Afterwards we were given the small pipetting workshop. Here we had to pipet different concentrations of a solution containing water and food coloring. There where various colors. At the end all the dilutions made with the 1000 micropipette and the 200 micropipette turned a golden-yellow color. Overall it was a very good experience, and I’m looking forward to the next seminar.
