1. Introduction
For this module, we are required to select a 10m x 10m site within the campus for
analysis regarding the use of space, accessibility etc. From the analysis result, we will
have to come up with a green space proposal to improve our selected site.
After thorough site surveys, my group decided to work on the balcony at Block D Level 5.
Our idea is to design a modern green space for students to hang out and relax during
breaks. Our concept is to calm the students through their five senses by creating a
refreshing atmosphere for stress relieve as most of the students accessing the floor are
medical students going through a tough and stressful course.
For this project, trees will be planted to provide shade for students. Plants with lush
green leaves and scent with nerve calming effect will be selected to be grown on-site.
There will also be water features set up on the balcony for a calming rhythm of the
flowing water. Pergolas with benches and also bean bag spaces for students to hangout
will also be found on the balcony for the comfort of the students. Other green features
such as green roofs and green walls will also be taken into account when reconstructing
the landscape.
2. Site analysis
The balcony at D5, which is at the west end of the block, was chosen as our site for the
following reasons:
- It is a big empty space that is usually left vacant due to the vast exposure to sunlight.
- The space is easily accessible to users, preferably students with the significant
amount of classrooms and a bridge that links to the other Educational Blocks on that
level.
- There is a nice view of the campus lake from site that is usually neglected due to the
sun.

g. Problems and solutions
Problem 1
Big trees can’t be planted on the balcony as the roots of the trees might damage the
structure of the building causing a possibility for it to collapse.
Solution:
Potted trees are planted instead of big trees, although shades provided by potted trees
are not compatible to big trees. Additional shades can be added to fill up the missing
shades.
Problem 2
It is impossible to be on the balcony during the afternoon due to the unbearable heat
and the reflection of sunbeams by the cement floor. The heat is so ultimate that people
can possibly sweat after standing there for only a short period of time. This happens
because there is no shade provided and the cement floor is so bare.
Solution:
Potted trees and plant will be planted on the balcony to provide shade. Grass will be
carpeted on the cement floor to reduce the reflection of sunlight and for the comfort of
the eyes. Simple wooden structures can be built for creepers to grow for additional
shades.
Problem 3
The balcony is a result of the lacking of proper space management. The balcony is empty
leaving no reason for human activity.
Solution:
To put the balcony in use, bean bags and benches are added to site for students to rest
with pergolas and green roofs as shelter from the hot sun. Fragrant plants are planted to
create a refreshing and pleasing atmosphere. There will also be water features and
green foliages to relax the mind of students facing stress.

LOCAL NAME: Family Combretaceae
AREA OF ORIGIN: Florida, Carribbean
DRY/WET: intermediate to wet
SUN/SHADE: full sun to semi-shade
HEIGHT: up to 12cm
GROWTH RATE: slow
DESCRIPTION: Evergreen tree. Leaves, broader than longer, 5 - 10cm in length,
heart-shaped at the base, deeply notched at the apex. Twigs grow densely in storeys
on whorls around the trunk. Bark, yellowish brown with white warts. Large white
flowers. Long, narrow, flattened pods, 20-30cm by 1.5-2.5cm. Salt-tolerant.
ADVANTAGES: Planted to provide shades for other plants. The leaves also does not
drop a lot, hence man power is cut down on swiping off the dried leaves
BOUGAINVILLEA
BOTANICAL NAME: Bougainvillea spectabilis
COMMON NAME: Bougainvillea
LOCAL NAME: Paperflower
AREA OF ORIGIN:
DRY/WET:DRY
SUN/SHADE: SUN
COLOURS AVAILABLE: Pink, Purple, White, Red, Orange, Yellow
HEIGHT: 1-12m tall
DESCRIPTION: Heat and drought tolerant. It is an evergreen, with thorny stems. It
usually grows 10–12 ft (3.0–3.7 m) tall, occasionally up to 30 ft (9 m). Tiny white
flowers usually appear in clusters surrounded by colorful papery bracts, hence the
name paperflower. The leaves are dark green, variable in shape. Pest-free plant.
ADVANTAGES: The site we have chosen is facing directly the sun, so it is best for this
flower plant to grow vibrantly. As the plant is heat and drought tolerant and it may
not affect the plant from blooming. Futhermore, bougainvillea needs a lot of
sunlight to aid blooming. We can also mix different colours together to make the
surrounding looks more attractive, as bougainvilleas comes in many colours.
IXORA
BOTANICAL NAME: Ixora chinensis
COMMON NAME: Ixora
AREA OF ORIGIN: Tropical Asia
DRY/WET: Intermediate
SUN/SHADE: Sun
HEIGHT: 60cm

DESCRIPTION: Showy flower clusters. Leaves are particularly leathery and glossy.
Each cluster may contain up to 60 individual flowers. The flower is very small and
tubular, with four petals. It comes in a variety of brilliant colours. The style is forked
at the tip, and it protruded slightly out of the corolla tube. The fruit is a berry
containing 1-2 seeds.
ADVANTAGES: Different colours of Ixora plant can be chosen to brighten up the
surrounding. The leaves does not drop easily. It can also grow and bloom in compact
during hot sunny weather. It needs a lot of sunlight to enable the flowers to bloom
every now and then.
TRADESCANTIA SPATHACEA
BOTANICAL NAME: Tradescantia spathacea
COMMON NAME: Moses in The Cradle, Oyster Plant, Boat Lily
AREA OF ORIGIN: Mexico
DRY/WET: Intermediate
SUN/SHADE: Sun/Shade
HEIGHT:30cm tall
SOIL TYPE: Moisture-retentive
DESCRIPTION: Herb native to Mexico with fleshy rhizomes. It has rosettes of waxy
lance-shaped leaves. Leaves are dark to metallic green above, with glossy purple

handle. Does not need grooming.
SPIDER LILY
BOTANICAL NAME: AMARYLLIDACAE
COMMON NAME: Crinum
AREA OF ORIGIN:
DRY/WET: Intermediate
SUN/SHADE: Sun/Shade
HEIGHT:30cm tall
SOIL TYPE: Moisture-retentive
DESCRIPTION: Leaves are a darker green in colour and on most species, tend to be held
slightly upright and in distinct ranks.
ADVANTAGES: This upright leaf arrangement catches and hides falling leaves making them
the perfect low maintenance plant under trees with a high leaf drop. Flowers open in the
evening emitting their perfume overnight and generally last 2 to 3 days.
YELLOW PALM
BOTANICAL NAME:Dypsis lutescens
COMMON NAME: Bambo Palm, Golden Cane Palm, Areca Palm
AREA OF ORIGIN: Madagascar
DRY/WET: Intermediate to wet
SUN/SHADE: Sun
HEIGHT: 6-12m
SOIL TYPE: Alkaline
DESCRIPTION: Feather-like green fronds radiating from several trunks characterize the Areca
Palm. This plant is beautiful when new, however overtime the Areca Palms attractive
appearance can diminish slightly. Fronds when bigger may droop and bend over. The Areca
Palm is a slow grower. It will grow wider before taller.
ADVANTAGES: The leaves does not drop easily The palm filters xylene and toluene from the
air. The plant will transpire 1 liter of water per 24 hours, thereby making it an effective
humidifier. It’s majestic like appearance and ability to fit into any decor all the work may be
a great payoff.
STRELITZE REGINEA

  • 3. 1. Introduction For this module, we are required to select a 10m x 10m site within the campus for analysis regarding the use of space, accessibility etc. From the analysis result, we will have to come up with a green space proposal to improve our selected site. After thorough site surveys, my group decided to work on the balcony at Block D Level 5. Our idea is to design a modern green space for students to hang out and relax during breaks. Our concept is to calm the students through their five senses by creating a refreshing atmosphere for stress relieve as most of the students accessing the floor are medical students going through a tough and stressful course. For this project, trees will be planted to provide shade for students. Plants with lush green leaves and scent with nerve calming effect will be selected to be grown on-site. There will also be water features set up on the balcony for a calming rhythm of the flowing water. Pergolas with benches and also bean bag spaces for students to hangout will also be found on the balcony for the comfort of the students. Other green features such as green roofs and green walls will also be taken into account when reconstructing the landscape.
  • 4. 2. Site analysis The balcony at D5, which is at the west end of the block, was chosen as our site for the following reasons: - It is a big empty space that is usually left vacant due to the vast exposure to sunlight. - The space is easily accessible to users, preferably students with the significant amount of classrooms and a bridge that links to the other Educational Blocks on that level. - There is a nice view of the campus lake from site that is usually neglected due to the sun. a. • 7. g. Problems and solutions Problem 1 Big trees can’t be planted on the balcony as the roots of the trees might damage the structure of the building causing a possibility for it to collapse. Solution: Potted trees are planted instead of big trees, although shades provided by potted trees are not compatible to big trees. Additional shades can be added to fill up the missing shades. Problem 2 It is impossible to be on the balcony during the afternoon due to the unbearable heat and the reflection of sunbeams by the cement floor. The heat is so ultimate that people can possibly sweat after standing there for only a short period of time. This happens because there is no shade provided and the cement floor is so bare. Solution: Potted trees and plant will be planted on the balcony to provide shade. Grass will be carpeted on the cement floor to reduce the reflection of sunlight and for the comfort of the eyes. Simple wooden structures can be built for creepers to grow for additional shades. Problem 3 The balcony is a result of the lacking of proper space management. The balcony is empty leaving no reason for human activity. Solution: To put the balcony in use, bean bags and benches are added to site for students to rest with pergolas and green roofs as shelter from the hot sun. Fragrant plants are planted to create a refreshing and pleasing atmosphere. There will also be water features and green foliages to relax the mind of students facing stress. Taylor’s Lake
