2. Introduction:
• The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-
carbohydrate diet that in medicine is used primarily to
treat difficult-to-control (refractory) epilepsy in children
• The diet forces the body to burn fats rather than
carbohydrates .
• An elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood, a state
known as ketosis, leads to a reduction in the frequency
of epileptic seizures
3. • Ketogenic diet-High fat and low carbohydrate
• The classic ketogenic diet contains a 4:1 ratio by weight of fat to combined
protein and carbohydrate. This is achieved by excluding high-carbohydrate
foods such as starchy fruits and vegetables, bread, pasta, grains, and sugar,
while increasing the consumption of foods high in fat such as nuts, cream,
oil and butter.
• A ketogenic diet is any diet that causes the body’s metabolism to stop using
glucose and start using fat as a source of energy. Once you have removed
carbohydrates from your diet, your insulin levels decrease and your
glucagon levels increase. This process then leads to an increase in free
fatty acids from your fat cells and thus more free fatty acids are burned in
the liver. This increased burning of free fatty acids leads to the production
of ketone bodies. The keto diet is made up of 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5%
carbohydrates. This combination enables your body to enter a state of
ketosis
