My Personal Testimony - James Eugene Barbush - March 11, 2024
Evaluation unit 4 pre-production
1. Evaluation:
When planning my short film, the first thing I did was draft out some initial ideas on a mind
map. I went through a range of different ideas before I found my final one. The way I found
which was going to be the one I wanted to create was I went through the process of
thinking which genres my target audience would be most attracted to. I did research about
what is the latest films 16-18 year olds where into at the time of the planning of my film. I
then put all the information into I pie chart where that made my final decision for me that
my filmwas going to be in the genre of horror/ mystery. Initially I was just going to do a
horror short film but because horror and mystery were the most popular choices I decided
to combine them both together to have a better outcome.
The next thing that made my filmsuccessful was the meetings that took place. The reason I
think the meetings played a significant part in making my product successful is because as
the meetings progressed production schedules were discussed also any points that people
were unsure about which was crucial because it meant everyone turned up to the shooting
locations on time and everyone knew where their places were and what they were doing,
which also meant production ran on schedule.
Filming took schedule over two days the first day was on the 22nd January 2019 where I we
filmed Barnes park and the second day was shot on the 12th February 2019. The reason for
such a big gap in between was because a few of my actors were ill so that set schedule off
track.
Another factor I had to think about when planning my filmwas my budget. The budget for
my filmwasn’t very big so I had to think how I could utilise this. I got the college camera
which was a loan so that didn’t take anything from my budget, cast wore their own clothes
so that was something that didn’t have to be took into consideration, all that we needed to
use our budget for was food and drinks, actors and an sd card. Creating a budget is
important because it allows you to see how much the project is going to cost and where the

impacted the final product because if I never used a budget then I would have spent more
money on the project than I wanted because I wouldn’t have had a guide to show me what
my money should be spent on.
The creative process of making my short film was
successful because I discussed my ideas on what to create
with friends which then developed into a proposal, then
leading to a script ( I typed the script up on a word
document from a template I found online which then
helped it be more professional also whist making it my
own)which helped me visualize where I wanted scenes to
be and how I wanted them to be shown like also the scrip
was said through text message as this was the way the
characters communicated to help fit in with the target
audience. The next thing I did was the location scouting
which helped me visualise how my film would be set out
and also help when it comes to creating my storyboard.
From there I went on to create my storyboard which was
designed on an a4 piece of paper, the storyboard helped
me place the actors in the correct place when it came to
filming and it also made sure nothing was out of place and there was no problems occurring
so I didn’t have to re-flim later on. Following these I had to create risk assessments to
ensure there were no risks of any actors or crew being hurt and to make sure the locations
had suitable conditions where we were filming in case there was a pothole that an actor
could twist their ankle on when walking and also I needed to plan how I would deal with
these problems if they occurred in the process of filming. Then I created a shooting
schedule to plan when filming would begin and end, doing this allowed me to be time
efficient and also plan the days that I wanted to capture my movie. The shooting schedule
was vital because it allowed me to plan out how the day was going to go which meant no
time was wasted thinking about when something was going to happen.
During filming we encountered the fact our locations were busy so we had to utilise the
space and time we had to make sure the public were comfortable as we were filming and
they may not have wanted to be in the background. So we decided to filmsomewhere less
busy in the park this had a significant impact on the storyboards because they then had to
be changed so the production schedule could run more smoothly
