NB-IoT Smart Gas Meter
With the maturity of NB-IoT and LoRa communication technology and the development of the
Internet of Things, smart gas meters are accelerating into the Internet of Things era.
On July 9, 2020, the ITU-R WP5D meeting held by the International Telecommunication Union
(ITU) was successfully concluded. Among them, an important highlight is that NB-IoT and NR
have officially become the 5G standard together, which reflects that NB-IoT has been widely
recognized as a 5G technology.
The application of gas meters has a history of more than 200 years and has experienced three
major development stages: mechanical diaphragm gas meters, IC card smart gas meters, and IoT
smart gas meters. Among them, the Internet of Things gas meter has been gradually applied to
urban smart gas with many advantages such as saving labor operating costs, intelligent
adjustment of gas prices, reducing security risks, and public utility cloud big data.
Although the remote gas meter represented by the NB-IoT smart gas meter has realized more
and more functions in technology, for a long time, the country has not established a unified
standard system for the smart gas meter industry, which gives product design and manufacturing,
experiments, acceptance, management, and other aspects bring many inconveniences and
influences.
Therefore, the gas meter market in my country is still occupied by most of the low-end ordinary
diaphragm gas meters and IC card gas meters.
In response to the above problems, in October 2019, the National Standardization Management
Committee officially issued the "Internet of Things to Smart Gas Meter Application General

Requirements for the Internet of Things System" (plan number: 20193197-T-469) national
standard revision plan, which is the Internet of Things The technology is the first national
standard for applications in the field of smart gas meters.
On July 9, 2020, the ITU-R WP5D meeting held by the International Telecommunication Union
(ITU) was successfully concluded. Among these, an important highlight is that NB-IoT and NR
have officially become the 5G standard together, reflecting the widespread recognition of NB-IoT
as a 5G technology. With the inclination of policies such as 5G and new infrastructure, and the
maturity of technologies and products related to cloud-pipe-end integrated solutions, IoT smart
gas meters will usher in a stage of comprehensive development.
From door-to-door meter reading to remote control, from the mechanical meter to smart meter,
from one-way data transmission to two-way communication, gas meters have been in our
country for nearly 70 years, and their informatization, intelligence, and networking have
improved. And it has witnessed the leap in living standards of residents. With the maturity of
NB-IoT and LoRa communication technology and the development of the Internet of Things,
smart gas meters are accelerating into the Internet of Things era.
As a low-power wide-area IoT communication technology, NB-IoT is especially suitable for remote
smart meter reading scenarios due to its large uplink capacity, wide coverage area, and strong
penetration performance. At present, the Internet of Things gas meter based on NB-IoT
technology is sought after for its three major advantages: labor-saving, intelligent adjustment of
gas prices, and stable signal transmission, and is widely used in urban smart gas construction.
The first batch of NB-IoT smart gas meters in Dongguan, Guangdong went online successfully;
27,000 households in Taiyuan, Shanxi have used NB-IoT IoT gas meters; Tianjin will replace NB-IoT
smart gas meters for 4 million households; Hebei Province requires gas The company further
improves the level of information management and compulsory use of IoT tables...
More and more cities are installing and using IoT smart gas meters.
In 2017, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the "Notice on
Comprehensively Promoting the Construction and Development of Mobile Internet of Things
(NB-IoT)", etc., to promote or encourage the use of NB-IoT technology to help improve public
service capabilities; early 2019, the Market Supervision Administration Housing and Urban-Rural
Development The Ministry issued a document requesting to strengthen the management of
civilian meters and promote the upgrading of smart meters.
With the deepening of the construction of smart cities, the expansion of the deployment scale of
NB-IoT base stations, the maturity and stability of chips, the gradual improvement of the IoT
platform, and the emergence of various smart terminals, NB-IoT will present a rapid scale
deployment effect, NB-IoT smart gas meter mass-market picture scroll will also accelerate the
opening.
