How does our skin age?
Hyaluronic acid is an essential component of
human skin. Like a sponge, its main function is
to bind moisture, causing skin to plump up.
Hyaluronic acid activates fibroblasts, which
produce the body’s own natural collagen and
elastin. By the time we reach the age of 25,
our natural production of hyaluronic acid has
already begun to slow down. As a result, our
skin becomes less elastic and its capacity to
store moisture decreases, as does its ability
to combat the harmful free radicals caused
by smoking, alcohol consumption, stress or
exposure to sunlight, for example.
This accelerates the depletion of the body’s
natural supply of hyaluronic acid. Together,
these factors are responsible for the different
rates at which skin ages and for the formation
of wrinkles.

The abundant supply of hyaluronic acid in the skin
activates fibroblasts, causing them to produce the
natural collagen and elastin, which gives the skin its
tone. Hyaluronan also binds many times its own weight
worth of moisture. The skin is smooth and fresh-looking.
