Stage 1: To demonstrate that the speaker’s thought were heard and
understood.
Kojo: –Well, I think that MS’s campaign is to draw attention to the problem of
not paying the rightful tax.
Facilitator (Ann): … Kojo, Let me see if I am understanding you. You are
saying that, MS’s campaign is about drawing attention to tax evasion in the
developing countries.
Kojo nods in appreciation to show that he has rightly been understood!!!

Kojo … They create safe havens in countries that pay low taxes, establish fake
sister companies and pretend that they pay heavy taxes and buy their supplies
at exorbitant prizes.
Facilitator (Ann): … It sounds like you are saying that the multinational
companies operating in developing countries create safe havens in countries
that have low taxes and pretend that their cost of production is high.
Kojo: yes yes !!

9. Paraphrasing demonstration continued
Stage 3: The facilitator does/may not necessarily agree to the speaker’s
idea, but he/she becomes nonjudgmental, respectful and validates the
speaker’s ideas.
Kojo: The governments in countries play an active role in such transactions.
Facilitator (Ann): Did I get it, you meant that governments in both the
concerned developing countries and tax-haven countries are involved in tax
evasion?

• Tracking (demonstration)
Scene 2: Here, the facilitator summarizes what has been said, and keeps track of
the various issues being said.
Kojo: One of the main agenda on the MS tax power campaign is to stop multinational
companies’ tax tricks and tax speculations.
Volunteer #1: The MS campaign is also aimed at stopping the granting of harmful
discounts to multinational companies.
Volunteer #2: The MS campaign is also directed towards creating increased
transparency.

Another is about discounts. And the third has to do with increasing transparency.
Step 3: Facilitator (Ann): Am I getting it right?
Kojo: No, you missed something about my point on tax speculation.
Facilitator (Ann): Well good Kojo……(Ann has validated (vindicated) Kojo and moves on
to step 4.
