Prepositions of
Time
A preposition of time is a preposition that
allows you to discuss a specific time period.
There are three prepositions in English that
are used with time in, at, on. Generally, in
shows the “largest” time or place, on shows
dates and time, and at usually shows the
“smallest” time or place.
Examples:
At weekends, I love to go skiing.
In spring, the weather is warmer.
The supermarket will be closed from 9 p.m. to
9 a.m.

Prepositions of
Place
A preposition of place indicates where
something or someone is located. When placed
before the noun or pronoun, they help us be
specific about where a certain object or
person is in relation to that noun.
Examples:
•I have kept the book I borrowed from
you on the table.
•Henry hid behind the door.
•The dog jumped over the fence.
•Can you place the red roses in between the
white daisies?

Prepositions of Direction
Prepositions of direction indicate the
location of a noun (a person, place, or
thing) in relation to another noun.
Prepositions precede a noun or a pronoun and
often accompany verbs of motion.
Examples:
• The girl ran toward her father the moment
she saw him.
• Jerry jumped into the river to help his
sister.
• Veena passed the book to Priya.
• When will Salvia be returning from London?

We have seen that prepositions of location
are the words that are used to describe the
stationary position of an object or person at
a particular time. It is employed to denote
the location of a particular object.
Examples:

for the weekend.

place after you play.
• I lay on the floor for a really long time.

Relationship
A preposition of spatial relationship is a
preposition used to denote where the subject
of a sentence is (noun or pronoun) or a
specific place for an action, often telling
where one object is in relation to another.
Examples:

children’s park.
• Lakshmi sat beneath the trees.
