 Crop considered both as a savior as well as a destroyer
Savior: Can survive in extreme conditions, in droughts and famines
Destroyer: Can cause a disorder
If consumed in small quantities, it is harmless. But if consumed as a diet for more than
3 months can cause permanent paralysis below knees in adults and brain damage in
children.
Potent neurotoxin called ODAP (β-N-Oxalyl-L-α,β-
diaminopropionic acid) which is responsible for the drought and
waterlogging tolerance of grass pea but, if taken in large enough
quantities, brings on the neurological disorder
Key Uses: Food, fodder, hay, green manure, medicinal

20. Vigna subterranea (Bambara groundnut)
Ability to fix nitrogen and its resistance to high temperatures and drought
makes it a valuable crop in areas where soils are too poor for other leguminous
crops to grow
 Burying its fruits in the soil it protects them from insect damage
 Nutritious, boasting a 65% carbohydrate content and an 18% protein
content
Also called as poor man’s crop
Key Uses: Food, fodder, medicine

21. Canavalia ensiformis (Jack Bean)
 Plant is tolerant to drought
 Grows well in poor soils and is resistant to insect pests and diseases
 Seeds are rich in carbohydrates, oil and protein
 Attractive as a potential food for humans or animals
Among the non-protein compounds contributing to the Jackbean toxicity are
tannins and saponins, and canavanine, an analog of the amino acid arginine.

22. Medicago Sativa (Alfalfa )
 Deep-rooted perennial
 It is the world's most important forage crop and a high-quality feed for all types
of livestock
It is "The king of all foods"!
 Used in beverages

23. Psophocarpus tetragonolobus (Winged bean)
 Variety of uses and disease tolerance
 Nutrient-rich, and all parts of the plant are edible
 29.8% to 39% protein
Pods: Can be eaten unripe as a crunchy vegetable, cooked or raw
Seeds: Seeds can be roasted like peanuts and have more nutrient value. Average about 35%
protein and 17% oil.
Roots: Tubers are high in protein and nutrient rich. Tuberous roots have 20% protein, which is
much higher than other edible roots.
Leaves and Flowers: Can be eaten raw or cooked. Flowers and leaves also have a high
protein content at 10-15%.
