The document discusses animal welfare in the agriculture industry. It outlines the perspectives of advocates such as the Humane Society of the United States, who believe that farm animals are abused and cannot show natural behaviors. It also describes the views of agvocates like pork and egg producers, who argue that laws are being made based on emotion and that confinement systems can benefit animals and farmers. The document also notes that proposition 2 in particular aimed to restrict the confinement of farm animals in California.

Editor's Notes
Has become a hot topic in recent years with laws and regulations being passed that effect how thousands of people do their jobs. Some people think these are necessary and important changes while others believe these changes can have detrimental effects
Proposition 2 at the forefront of issue. Passed in CA in 2008 and a few other states since. Banned animals being confined in spaces where they could not extend their limbs or turn around.
Earlier this year an Ohio dairy farmer was caught on video for beating his animals and was faced with 12 accounts of animal cruelty. Mercy for animals is going undercover into farms to catch these videos. Chet Utter back was concerned with the reputation of poultry farms after the salmonella outbreak that concerned eggs from Iowa.
Of more animal welfare regulations in the ag. Industry. These groups believe animals raised in confinement farming systems are being abused and are not allowed to display natural behaviors. Hens crammed in battery cages; company is only looking at the amount produced. Bockman; using animals for products is taking advantage of them, however it’s more acceptable if conditions change to group facilities. Farm sanctuaries are not being pushed but what some animal rights groups would like to see. Animals merely live out their lives.
Chet Utterback is the University of Illinois Poultry farm manager. Happy healthy animals produce more, laws are being made on emotion; animals in group housing will pick on each other more (especially pigs and poultry) because of pecking order and competition, sow may lay on her piglets. Confinement systems make it easier to watch and check on the animal, cheaper products because of less labor, control environment. Moulting.
Jarrell works for U of I; assistant director of the An Sci department, Compliance officer. With the advances in technology there is no reason for some farm practices to be in place, they should be analyzed for improvement or eradication. Commercial farms are not the ones causing the problems because they focus on output and need animals to be healthy and happy, backyard breeders get in over their head and don’t know what to do. People are creating laws based on emotion; giving animals humanistic features, however, the interest of the public in animal well being is a good thing. Can fit half as many animals, animals not as efficient, price of eggs goes up, harms low income families that need protein. If ag industry polices itself the most knowledgeable people are making the rules whereas laws may be unclear. Responsible for selves.
